Workshop 7/17/16

So I got there by 10am, others showed up at 12pm. I worked on the Commodore 64 robot and got a working robot with the huge assistance of David and Jonathan G. who helped me to redesign the project from the manual to actually make something that worked well. I will make another robot device or two on Wednesday for HOPE. Bill Dromgoole finished testing the Univac generator and worked getting the teletype for the Univac working. Bill I. worked on the Analog EAI computer and did some documenting of the system. Jeff Jonas floated around and assisted everyone all day. Jonathan G. worked on his Dectalk -III Power supply unit. It was a lot of fun and we wrapped things up around 6pm or so. Can others add more details to what they did? == Jeff Brace

Unusual workshop hours :)

The museum workshop stopped at 9pm last night, but I didn't start at home until 7pm. Stayed up until now (5:45am) working on Lego stuff for my HOPE game next weekend. Redesigned the reduction gearbox for compactness. Now it's half the size and just as efficient. We only have two motors. One opens and closes the garage door to let cars down the track. The other moves the garage sideways for aiming the cars. Players will control both of them using my BASIC program, so I dug through my big box o' childhood Legos and found some computer-y looking parts from a Lego space station model. I will make a little control room. If anyone asks, that's what runs all the action. :) Going to sleep for a while and get back to building and coding later.

Workshop 7/16 report

Alex and I were the first to arrive today. He helped me setup the tables in the room. I started him working on the Hero 1 Robot. Alex can provide deals, but he was unable to get the Hero 1 working. :( Later Bill Dromgoole came and worked on the generator for the Univac. He can provide you his progress report. Dean and Drew worked on and fixed their three Vic-20 keyboards. They also helped out myself with setting up the wi-fi network better as well as did a food run to Taco Bell. Jeff Jonas and Bill I. helped bring over and do a cursory check of the EAI analog machine. Bill I. will be working on this tomorrow. I worked on helping get everyone setup and settled and was docent at the museum. There were about a dozen visitors. I started sorting out the parts for the C64 robot, and picked out all the parts for a project to build. I will work build it tomorrow. Everyone shared knowledge and helped it each other out. It was great fun! We ended the night rather early for a workshop at around 9pm. We start again tomorrow at 10am.

Just the other day I decided to give this Go game a shot, since pokémon has been something I've enjoyed since it hit American shores in '98. It's a buggy ARG, but it is kinda fun. If it weren't the dead if summer in Virginia, I would probably be walking around more to make the most of the experience. For someone like me, it's letting me play out something I've enjoyed for most of my life. I still find myself carrying an original Gameboy (or more recently the Japanese exclusive Gameboy Light) with a copy of Red version from time to time. Then again I happen to be in the age range that pokémon targeted when it was released. I watched the poorly animated/dubbed TV show, collected the early era of cards -- I've even been known to cosplay at anime conventions as one of the stock bad guy grunts, Team Rocket. Side note, it's not dog fighting, it's Japanese beetle collecting and fighting -- something kids don't exactly participate in here. Workshop July 16/17

I know that there will be less attendees for this workshop, but still wanted to send this out. The room for the workshop is cleared. There are enough outlets for the people coming. I'm told there are eight separate circuits. There are tables from 9010-B that we can use for the workshop. Looks like we are in good shape and ready to go. I just ask that everyone make sure that they take care not to mess up the carpet and to clean up afterwards as much as possible. LOCATION: InfoAge Building 9010A - (2201 Marconi Road, Wall Township, NJ) TIME: Start about 10 A.M. on Saturday and ends whenever we go to sleep. End about 5 P.M. on Sunday. (Starts around 10 A.M. Sunday morning) COST: $10 for all members attending the workshop, which VCF donates to InfoAge as thanks for providing the space for us. EQUIPMENT: VCF will provide a table and you can use any available electrical outlet. Bring your own tools, power strips, power cords and supplies etc. DRINKS: You should bring your own. I would recommend bringing a cooler of some type. Upon request there is a refrigerator available down the hall. FOOD: You provide your own. We may order pizza or go out to a dinner. Usually we make a decision when everyone gets hungry. GATE: Please close the front gate behind you. We want museum visitors to go to the front lobby and not wander through the middle of the campus. WTB/WTT: PDP-11/34 Chassis, or Boards for Trade

All, I recently picked up a large lot of board scrap that appears to contain a gutted PDP-11/34. The CPU, front panel interface, floating point, et c. all appears to be there, in relatively OK shape (for board scrap). I don't have a PDP-11/34 chassis, so I'd like to see if anyone has one for sale/trade, with or without anything in it. If I'm unsuccessful in finding a chassis, does anyone need some/all of the board set for a PDP-11/34? Obviously untested since I don't have a chassis. Thanks, Jonathan

I have a Sharp PC-5000 (laptop circa 1983) in the box with the manuals. It worked last time I tried it several years ago. Not sure if I still have the disks but it should be standard DOS. Hate to sell it because it was a gift from another collector (my plan was to give it to the museum) but I really need some money. In my opinion* it's worth a few hundred dollars. * Strictly my personal property and personal opinion about the value; not at all related to VCFed stuff.

So it was a slow day with 5 visitors. They were very interested. One boy around 15/16 even tried his hand at BASIC on the PET. He was used to programming Python. display case for museum

Everyone, We need a large display case for some ENIAC/Univac artifacts. We have a few display cases that are waist-high. But we need something taller in order to show more artifacts without using more floor space. The ideal case would have a black exterior, adjustable shelves, lights for each shelf, mirrored back panel, and locking door. It would be four feet wide, a foot or two deep, and maybe chest height. That's asking a lot... we can probably take something simpler and add our own mirrors, lock, etc. Anybody have something that might work or know where we could get something inexpensive? I'm not above converting a bookcase or using Craigslist. New ones are quite expensive. (Don't just bring something in, we need to see it first...)

Museum Report 7/6/2016

Slow day at the museum. It's a nice hot and sunny day so everyone is at the beach, pool or working etc. One visitor, but he had been here previously at VCF and didn't have the time to look at the museum before. Looked about by himself and I chatted with him for a while. My main project was to get the Internet working in the museum. I got it working. So wi-fi now works for our members. Right now the speed is relatively slow, but next week I hope to move the receiver closer to the window to increase the speed. I didn't get to the Commodore 64 robotics kit, mostly because the parts haven't arrived and partly because I left the manual at home. I will be working on this next week as the parts will be here before next Wednesday. == Jeff Brace

Sorry for the late post, but I've been busy. Mouse was docent this past Sunday. About 30 visitors came by because there was a Rebel Arts Music Fair on InfoAge's campus right behind the museum. Cool new artifact

Our newest artifact, to be delivered next month, really is "cool": a member of the Mauchly family is giving us a desk fan that John M. brought home from the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Co. office. It will go in a display case in our museum. We can make a sign (for example): "Early computers made their surrounding environment quite hot. This desk fan favored by John Mauchly came from the EMCC office."

Workshop July 16/17 location change

Since a lot of our members are going to K-Fest and the turn out looks really low we are moving the location of the workshop from the big room (9032-A) to a smaller "classroom" space in 9010-A. Drive listings for Heath/Zenith 386 bios

Hi all, I have a Heath/Zenith Z-386 SX/20. I am wanting to get it up and running, The only thing is the listings for the hard drive in the bios do not seem to be standard standard, as there are 63 of them. Museum Report 7/3/2016

I was at the museum today with Bill Degnan. Corey Cohen was there to unlock the doors. We had three groups of visitors today. The first was a women and three children. The kids were very excited but Mom was afraid they would break something so they didn't stay long. The next was an older man who was reminiscing about the old days when he operated some similar equipment He hung around for a while and kept talking to Bill D. Ha-ha The last was a couple who were very interested in the punch cards and the card reader/printer on the IBM 1130. Apparently she used to work with punched cards and formatting data for the keypunch operators. Bill D1 was able to complete his tasks given to him by Jeff. He got all the computers working except for the TRS 80 model 1 which was missing a cable. Bill D2 removed the capstan from the display Univac 1532 and cleaned out all the gummy rubber and debris left in the paper tape reader. We also checked two of the three warehouse 1532s. The capstans on them are in equally bad condition to the one removed from display. We took one of the other bad capstans off of the warehouse 1532 for comparison and measurements. We have fairly accurate measurements taken with a vernier dial indicator caliper. Now we need to get one rebuilt. The extra capstan is in the bottom drawer of the I/O console. Bill Drom

OT: bluetooth mouse

I ordered a Bluetooth mouse for my laptop. It comes with a little adapter that plugs into the laptop's USB port. Dumb question: the laptop already has Bluetooth built in, so would I not need that adapter? Then again, which would use drain the laptop battery less -- the internal Bluetooth or the adapter via USB?

found some 8212's with strange markings

anyone come across some 8212's with a strange markings. I bought these a long time ago, so I can't which parts supplier had them. the part# is 8212P but it has no vendor symbol or prefix and the datecode has TSL9445 I didn't think they were still made 20yrs later And the prefix on the datecode is rather odd I just might have to add this profile to my chip tester to see if these are really genuine Dan

Looking for Windows/286; vintage windows setup question

All – Lots of fun on a Saturday…I’m working on an AT/286 project and wondered if anyone had a copy of Windows/286. I have various versions from 1.00 to 3.11 (including 2.03) but not that version. Please let me know off-list if you have it. Thanks. As an aside, I was able to get Windows 2.03 running with the normal EGA driver but NOT Windows 1.04 even though I selected the same video driver. It bombs out on the splash screen while printing the copyright info (random characters and beeping). Not sure what to make of it…guessing video driver issue but not 100% sure because the same setting works in 2.03. My 2.03 disks also have a bad sector on the fonts disk so I’m missing the Times font.
