museum workbench tools

So..... our new workbench is a mess and we have very few tools other than a soldering station, desoldering station, and scope (that one's coming soon). Can somebody donate a new, full-scale electronics tool kit? It would be * really nice * to get a nice kit instead of mismatched hand-me-downs. All we have now are a few random screwdrivers and stuff. Fairly useless. :)

Heath H-11 line time clock question

All — I just hit on an anomaly with my H-11 so I wondered if there was anyone on-list with experience with the H-11, although it crosses-over to DEC. In short, I added an Emulex SCSI card and SCSI2SD to my H-11 so I could run RT-11. The TU58 emulator was way too slow. RT-11 won’t boot with the LTC enabled, and the Emulex manual specifically says it should be disabled at the CPU card. But, I want to run Kermit (to enable easier file transfers rather than dd’ing a new image to the SCSI2SD each time), and Kermit for the PDP-11 requires the LTC. The H-11 comes in two versions – one with an LTC switch and one without. Mine doesn’t have the switch, but one was added, performing the same function electrically (grounding the base of the transistor driver to the BEVENT signal). If I put a counter on the BEVENT pin, I get 60Hz with it enabled and 150Hz with it disabled. This is the anomaly I wanted to check out with any other H-11 owners. Alternatively, if anyone knows of a file transfer program for RT-11 (SJ, FB monitors only) then maybe that’s an option. I’ve seen an XMODEM program but it uses TSX. Thanks! Just wanted say its been another great event. Wouldn't miss it for the world. There were great keynote speakers, so many good classes, as well as great exhibits this year. Something to enjoy in all corners of those event. In addition, it's always nice to see familiar faces again and I'm happy to see new ones. This is how this group stays vibrant and alive. This had become my annual pilgrimage for a decade and hope I can for another decade. Kudos to the VCF board, Evan, Corey and Jeff for masterminding another year with an event full of activities. I know they put up with a lot of crap from us, including myself :) But I think it's all for the betterment of this group. And a special thanks to the 'boots-on-the-ground' volunteers that helped make this possible.

Pics taken with a Elph camera not cell phone. Probably a few not worth keeping, but the internet is slow. These are coming out of San Diego so the shipping/handling charges are pretty steep to the east coast. Good news everyone! Turns out my car was fixed in a matter of hours. The timing belt went while I was on the NJ Turnpike, which explains the nature of the breakdown. I'll be picking it up first thing tomorrow morning so I can make it to the keynotes. I want to thank everyone for their offers to drive me from point to point. Long night!

Had lots of helpers today. Corey/Jeremy, Jeff B., Jeff G. (Bags, not Galinat), Tony, Bob F., Alex D., Ian, Dan, Don, and Chris F. .... sorry if I forgot anyone! Started today at 8:30am. People arrived throughout the day. We set things up all day. Pizza lunch and we went to late dinner around 10pm. Jeff B. and Dan came back to museum for another hour or two. Bob and I didn't finish until 3:30am! There is a lot we * didn't * get done in the museum and for the show. At this stage every year, I realize that wherever we stand is final. We did our best. And now, it's time for two hours of sleep for me. :( Please be patient when I'm on fumes tomorrow night.

I'm getting it towed somewhere safe, and all that jazz but I may end up needing to hitch a ride here or there depending on how rental cars work out for a bit. If the room you are video-recording in is using a mic and speakers, the audio should be OK. I have been a freelancer in the A/V business for 35 years. I programmed multi-image slide shows for corporate meetings and such, back in the '80s on an "AVL Genesis" - either as a branded PC, or with a "Genesis card" in an 8-bit slot in an IBM, Compaq or clone. Now I do powerpoint for a living. Same show, different technology. In recent years I have had a fit of nostalgia for the business as it was back in the day, and of course the gear that I worked with. I am now surrounded by IBM 5155s, Compaq portables, and some AVL branded computers, all in various states of repair. Not to mention slide projectors, dissolve units, etc, etc. Here's my AVL page: www.stevenmichelsen.com/AVL Anyway, all this talk tempts me to bring along my video camera and tripod on Friday (I live in northern NJ). Afterwards I can hand over any video files via dropbox or whatever you like. That's the equivalent of telling someone "learn Boolean logic before looking at TTL circuits". I plan to go though the basic idea of electronic computing without bits. The first few minutes will be a quick overview of key ideas in electrical engineering. The second segment will look at using operational amplifiers to create mathematical building blocks. The remainder of the presentation will go through an example of modeling a simple physical system and illustrating it on a Comdyna GP-6. The second session I'm part of is on the ENIAC. Evan and I are basically tag-teaming about the ENIAC. I'll let Evan speak to anything he wants to say about his part of the presentation. My part will focus on the technical details of how the machine worked. I'll also be talking some about how it was programmed (primarily in its original mode of operation, but as time permits I do plan to talk a little about the instruction set architecture implemented in 1948). Several aspects of the machine's operation will be illustrated with an ENIAC simulator I've been developing over the past few months. I'll also echo Ian's offter that I'll be glad to adjust the focus and emphasis of my talks to address things that are of most interest to the audience. Hope that's helpful to anyone trying to decide which sessions to attend. BLS

I will not get into the issues of using ann LCD/Plasma to display NTSC... I am going to cover the 2 most common causes of "fuzzieness". 1. Convergance, this is where the 3 electron beams from the CRT do not meet up percicely at the shadow mask/apature grill of the CRT, thus the beams strike the wrong color of phosphor. this can easily be seen with white text or lines/boxes, you will see that in the center of the white area everything is white but then there are little color "fringes" of red, green or blue. The procedure is differnt forn diffent styles of monitors/tvs say Trinintron vs non trinitron, but if the monitor/tv has a menu system see if you can find a convergance menu (sometiems a service menu) and select the options for comvergance and alllign everything meet in the center, for convergance you leave the green alone and move the red and blue to meet green. If there are not menus you will have to get inside the monitor, for non Trinitrons the convergance adjustments are generally on the neck of the tube as a set of movable magnetic rings on the neck of the tube, they get rotated to change the allignment. Real old sets have a "Convergance Panel" inside the set with the adjustments as a large field of pots and coils. For Trinitron based monitors, they have the magnets on the neck of the CRT as wll as a "H-Stat" atjustment on the flyback, you adjust that to get things as close as you can horozontally then go to the rings on the neck. For most older monitors convergance is a compermise, it will always be best in the center and drift out twards the edges of the tube, you just get it as good as you can. 2. Focus, this is general fuzziness even when the convergance is good, as such the convergance needs to be close before focuse can be properly adjusted. This is an internal adjustment, sometimes as on Trinitron monitors the focus control is on the flyback, but on most monitors it will be genrerally in the same HV area as the flyback, you just adjust for the best results.
