VCF SouthWest 2023 wrap-up

The Vintage Computer Festival SouthWest 2023 was a blast! A great group of guys who organized this show. It was great to see the show rebooted after 11 years. Just so everyone knows they are their own non-profit who organized and financed the show (Vintage Computer Collective of North Texas), but with support from the Vintage Computer Federation, sponsors, and many supporters. There were lots of great exhibits, sellers, talks. I took some video which I have or will upload. I also took tons of pictures which I will upload somewhere too. They had an auction there which was very successful. They had a streamer panel, a Tandy panel. I got there before the show. It was great to see familiar faces: Jeri Ellsworth, Burger Becky, Bil Herd, Sean from Action Retro, Alexander Pierson, Thomas CherryHomes, etc. And new faces from the organizers at VCF Southwest. A great bunch of friendly guys. I was glad to have a vacation and enjoy the show instead of being the organizer. The show took place at The University of Texas at Dallas (in Richardson, TX) at the Davidson-Gundy Alumni Center. Financially they are in the black, so I see no reason why they wouldn't be back at the same place and grow the show to other buildings. Saturday night we did the usual VCF outing and went to a retro arcade: FreePlay. Bil Herd, Jeri Ellsworth, Usagi Electric were there. I stayed for two days after the show and visited The National Video Arcade Museum in Frisco, TX. A very nice museum. I recommend everyone to go there and check it out. Stolen Vintage Computer Stuff Philadelphia area

Greetings, I think it's unlikely, but I had a massive theft in Philly. Sometime between August 2022 and probably February (I only discovered the theft in May) I had a TON of stuff stolen in Philadelphia, including lots of NON-computer stuff. Some of the highlights of the vintage computer stuff stolen: Atari Video Music C-240 (this is a video effects box) Apple IIgs, Apple IIc, Mac II (not sure of model), Mac LC, Amiga 500, some other Amiga stuff, Atari 1200 stuff new in box condition, a ton of 3 1/2" disks with Amiga software, daisywheel printer, dot matrix printer, film scanner, photo printer, lots of milkcrates filled with computer magazines (and related stuff like Mondo 2000, early Wired magazines, stuff from the ACM, etc.), obscure hardware like a (I believe) external SCSI PCMCIA / CF card adapter, Bernoulli Drive, external SCSI drives, manuals for a Heathkit TV, etc. etc. If you happen to have seen any of this stuff, acquired any of this stuff seen ads for this stuff, any and all leads appreciated. I'm not even that worried about getting (most) of it back. Mainly I'm just looking for leads as to where my stuff went and other information I can use to go after the people responsible and possibly recover some of my more personal items. Commodore DIN Connector Soldering Aide

PCs Limited / attn: Bill Sudbrink

Bill (or whomever would know) What version MS DOS came with the PCs Limited Turbo PC, and was there a manual, diagnostic disk, etc? Trying to track down. I am working on a very early PCs Limited box with the "ARC Turbo Board" motherboard. There are probably a few marginal RAM chips on the board, the ROM is customized for the vendor. I did find a motherboard layout with jumpers, but no error codes. I am getting an "X Turbo System Error # 04" upon boot, and when I hit enter the system falls into regular mode. It may be RAM it may be the 8088-2. I will work to fix but having a manual or diagnostic would be nice Thanks

Great day at the museum

Doug Crawford, Christian Liendo and Ken Gober helped Martin with laying down fiber to the 9010 building. I'm sure that they will give a report later. Doug was also docent at the museum. Myself, Corey Cohen, Liz Cohen, Ben Cohen and Marcus Mera sorted out and counted all the swag in the warehouse. Corey and I focused on preparing what we have to ship out to VCF West. Corsham day

Bill Degnan suggested ways to pay homage to Bob Applegate. One thing mentioned was a VCF-East exhibit. That seems to me to be a long way off, other things can be done sooner. Bob's work included producing new SS-50 products and also KIM accessories and a half-sized KIM. But I looked at my 2023 VCF-East photos, and I didn't notice or recall any SS-50 exhibits. Bob of course exhibited Corsham products a few years prior. So, why not encourage a few owners of Corsham products, to exhibit next April at VCF-East, their SS-50 systems, original era and Corsham-era? It need not be a large exhibit, these are not large systems. A few owners could run a table and possibly accept other owner's equipment for exhibit. The VCFed warehouse has a few SWTPC, Gimix and other systems (maybe to be restored at repair events?) The SS-50 6800 architecture created by SWTPC in the mid-1970's was well respected, not hard to build, and performed comparably to 8080 systems of the era. Other companies produced SS-50 products; in time some moved into other bus architectures that supported Motorola processors. FLEX OS was comparable to CP/M. And that base of software and hardware led to 6809 and 68000 SS-50 systems into the early 1990's. They found use as business and industrial systems and personal systems, again as did other 8 and 16-bit microcomputer architectures. As IBM PC's and compatibles began to dominate personal and business computing, and home-video-gaming computers became less expensive and consumer items; the class of boxey-bussed-board systems (SS-50, S-100, etc.) became out of favor in that space. Bob revived production of SS-50 boards decades later, I don't know the details. That history suggests an exhibit theme. I don't have much SS-50 myself but I know others do. And I've not described other products of Bob's, others who know can work those into a narrative and an exhibit. regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. How much was the NES (though really only interested in random NES games.) Looked like quite a bit of variety from DEC Desksides to in the box Apple II stuff to TRS-80s and more? Help identifying a memory/program card case

I found a couple of what appear to be card cases mixed in with my stuff but I can’t identify them. They have no writing and are transparent with a light violet hue, 2-1/2” by 3-1/2” and about 1/4” thick. Photo link below. Do any of you have any idea what these are? They sure look familiar to me. Next Warehouse Cleanup Day

Hello everyone, Summer is here and it's getting hotter, therefore I think less people are inclined to work in a hot warehouse. I'm setting a date for the next warehouse cleanup: Nov. 5. My plan for this day is to clear out the vines and small trees behind the new warehouse section. I'm hoping by this date that there will be less likelihood for poison ivy to be alive. If someone has a chainsaw that we can borrow, then that would be great. I may still try to plan another day where we take care of things inside the warehouse. That would likely be in early October. In the meantime, there are smaller things that we are doing to get things ready like sweeping, getting items out owned by other groups, etc. We are also starting to look into ways to repair windows, and soffits, etc. as well as getting new doors. We are also thinking about what we want to do with the floor to make it better. Thanks! Bob Applegate

I'm saddened to read today that Bob Applegate passed a few days ago. I knew him through our common interests in 6502/6800/SS50 worlds. It's commendable that despite his long illness, he worked and supported his customers in that community. We traded some 6502 software just a month ago. He was a thoughtful person. He'll be very missed. Of course my deepest sympathies to his family. I see people want to reach out to his family. I have no authority on these matters. But the way these things usually work, someone with some authority in the vintage community, works with the family in some way, and provides some means to forward condolences and notes of appreciation and convey other information. And in some cases, there's later some kind on line presence for general notes of sympathy, when final arrangements are made. I had many nice chats with Bob at VCFs & bought many of his kits & boards. I was always impressed with his attention to detail. He will be missed! Swap Meet Success!

It was nice to have the fire museum volunteers sell food. The chili was wonderful! Thanks also to the Sea Cadets who managed so many parts of it. Thanks to all the VCF volunteers who helped me setup and breakdown. It was an exhausting weekend for me, but well worth it as I saw many happy people. Successful Repair Workshop

We also had a repair workshop this weekend. Many who got treasures from the swap meet brought them to the repair workshop to fix. Lots of happy people it seems. I have a box of 8" disks wuth various CPM stuff on then (Fortran, Bds C, some other C). An NCR AT but riser (specific to NCR machines) A PC104 AT Riser A Digiport 8 (I think) port card and cable. A CR drive that takes a tray (no tray). Probably SCSI - DM3021 (Texel?) A CR drive that may take a tray (no tray) NEC-CDR-55JD I have a bunch of AT cards and I think a few old PCI (?) cards. A Sunday morning truck fire below an I-95 overpass of Cottman Ave near Philadelphia, near the Tacony district, caused a northbound section to collapse and compromised the southbound side. Cool project! Did you consider using logic closer to DEC's R-series logic, where flip-flops require only two transistors, with a heavy use of diode-capacitor gates and pulse amplifiers? It seems like this would perhaps be a more efficient use of vacuum tubes, as I would suspect a single (dual triode) tube could implement one flip-flop. Thanks, Kyle

Swap Meet is on! (June 10, 2023)

We are going forward with the swap meet as planned. After looking at the forecasts for the air quality, the predictions show that things will clear up to acceptable levels by Saturday. I still recommend that everyone bring a high quality N95 mask as extra protection. If any vendor doesn't feel comfortable and wants to cancel before the swap meet, we will issue a refund. On the bright side the temperature looks like it will be 76 degrees and only a 25% chance of rain. New this year we will have food for sale in the parking lot by a non-profit fire museum. I will be setting up at 6AM. Vendors can setup at 7AM. Buyers come at 8AM. Thanks! Monroe was 369 at 8PM (yikes) and I can recall it being worse. We had a huge fire in the 70's that wiped out our forests in Monroe. This isn't even close to the smoke we had then (fire was 1/2 a mile away). But now I have asthma and this is nasty. The air's very thick and hazy from the smoke. however, I can't imagine this being any worse than spending an evening camping next to a bonfile or next to a beach kegger with a bonfire.

Just added: Besides the TRS-80 Model 1 systems, Model 4, Color Computer 2 systems, plus related software and documentation that I added the other day, I’ve also now added all the TRS-80 Model 1/3/4 books that I have. I’ve had a lot of inquiries about the Model 4 - yes, it’s still available until someone commits to coming and getting it! I think I’m going to have to put it back into storage, as I’ve now been using it for days and I don’t want to get drawn back in! ;) I think once I get all the TRS-80 stuff stowed back away I’ll go back and add the assorted items that I found in my closet in the other categories *after* I did the listings. I'm starting with you guys before trying to list elsewhere, although I may hit some of the dedicated FaceBorg pages (such as for Aquarius and Apple II.) I'm willing to ship some of the smaller items, but in general systems or monitors will need to be picked up here (near the Fort Washington exit of the PA Turnpike) or nearby, and cash or PayPal for payment. I may also consider trades for some of the video game stuff I'm looking for. It pains me to do this, but the clutter is getting out of hand, and I haven't touched most of these in years. Well of course WE'LL still keep performing it :) similar to vintage computer knowledge like peeks & pokes, orientation of "pin 1", jumper settings, storage layouts, I/O Port Addresses, IRQ's, DMA, plus many, many more (please list more if you like.) How has the backgrounding of these vintage things (largely unneeded for today's modern computer) yet still relevant, enriching and mind-provoking affected the space? How would the loss of coding impact it? I'm torn. From the photo, it's hard to tell the issue. I don't recommend powering up the H88. The tantalum caps on the +12 /+18V line tend to short out and burn up traces. Thoughts on exhibiting

Hi all, I’ve been sat in my spare room over several years fixing, restoring and tinkering with old machines, usually with the likes of Adrian’s Digital Basement or Usagi Electric on the TV to keep me company. I only really learnt about the VCF recently… but since then, I’ve got the idea in my head of (carefully) throwing a bunch of my British home computers — and maybe an Atari or two — in a suitcase and flying over to the US to exhibit at VCF East 2024. Does that sound like it’d be of interest? I’d bring all that I could — a selection of BBC Micros, Acorn Archimedes, Amstrad CPCs, etc. Whatever I could fit in 23 kilos! I’d happily let anyone have a play around on them and share whatever I know. I suppose I’m asking where the ‘bar’ is for exhibiting. I’m certainly no Adrian or David — just a guy with a soldering iron and an oscilloscope and too much time on his hands. But I do love these old machines and it’d be nice to share. If it’s not quite what the festival needs, I’m still planning on flying over in April to attend even if I don’t exhibit! Any thoughts appreciated! Cheers, Chris

Warehouse cleanup 05-28-2023

Another great day of cleaning out our future warehouse. I met Christian Liendo there and Ken Gober around 9AM, Bill Interriden joined us shortly after that followed by Thomas and Ian Litchfield. We worked for about 2 and half hours before calling it quits for lunch at almost noon. Some had other appointments and had to go. The rest stayed to work on other things and be docent for the museum. We filled up most of the dumpster. We removed almost everything that could be removed. The remaining items belong to other groups or are too large to fit in the remaining space in the dumpster. There are also paints and other items that have to be properly disposed of. We will access what remains and come up with another cleanup day. There is a lot of dust and other particles that need to be vacuumed with a shop vac or swept up. We are getting closer to having it completely emptied out. There were lots of technical glitches during VCF East with the Zoom talk by Leo Binkwoski, Nabu developer. So, I am doing a live Q&A session with him this coming Saturday, May 27 at 6:30PM EDT. There was no monitoring of questions during the livestream during VCF East and I'm sure many were frustrated with the network problems. So I now want to give everyone a chance to do Q&A based on his high quality talk that we posted last Saturday 5/20/23. DJ Sures and Brian Johson will be there for support.
