Hi, everyone, I'll be travelling south on the North Jersey Coast train Saturday morning, aiming for 11:05am arrival in Belmar or Bradley Beach (although could turn out to be 1:05pm). Anyone else training it in and want to share a cab to InfoAge? (Ditto for getting back to train station Sunday evening, OR if any of the driving masses want to offer a short ride...) (Ditto for anyone staying in or near Point Pleasant Beach Saturday night and wants to share or offer a ride!) Travelling from Virginia for the fest via multiple train legs, can't wait! Bill, On second thought, why not bring one of your ImageWriters. Who knows if I'll need it for the display, and if there is a potential electrical problem with the one I own, then I can use your (known good) one at home instead of the one that smells like burnt electronics. Question: What is the best way to connect an Apple II Plus and a Macintosh 512Ke to the same ImageWriter II? I know that LocalTalk is out of the question because of the II Plus, so I had tried using a Mini-DIN8 data switch. Replacing keyswitches on a Macintosh Plus keyboard

Folks, While doing a dry run for my exhibit this weekend, I (stupidly) forgot that the keyboard was still plugged into my Mac 512Ke, and it fell of the desk and the top rightmost keyswitches ('/' and '*') snapped. The keycaps came off, with the top part of the keyswitches still stuck inside. I tried to remove them with a pair of pliers, but I couldn't get a good enough grip to do so. So I used two-part epoxy to reconnect the keycaps with the broken keyswitch stems back onto the keyswitches themselves. Electrically, they work, but I don't have high hopes of this repair job holding (even through the weekend) Has anybody here had any experience with a repair of this kind? Do the Mac Plus keyboards use a standard type of keyswitch that I can just re- solder onto the board? And how the heck can I get the broken stems out of the two keycaps? I did a dumb and blew out a chip on the Imagewriter II that I was going to use as part of my exhibit at VCF East this weekend. Luckily, somebody at work gave me her old Imagewriter I and Macintosh accessory kit yesterday! The problem is that while I need to be able to connect my Mac to the printer, I *also* still need to connect my Apple II to the printer. Does anybody here have an Apple II (DB25) to Imagewriter I (DB25) cable that I can borrow for the weekend? Bonus question: Does anybody have a DB25 switchbox that I can use to connect _two_ computers to a single printer? Two if I am using a switchbox. I have a DB-25 switchbox, which I had forgotten about when I wrote my initial email. I'm not sure if it will work or not so having other options would be useful. S-100 Repair at VCF East Workshop

All, Due to components shortages/costs and several folks requesting it, we're going to do S-100 evaluation and some repair at the Glitch Works kit workshop at VCF East next weekend. We've apparently got several new S-100 owners in the VCF-MidAtlantic group! I'll be bringing our medium-sized variac for first time bringup, known good RAM, I/O, and CPU boards, etc. We've also gotten requests for some of our reproduction Solid State Music T-1 terminator kits, so we'll have those too. Some of the usual kit offerings will also be available, but due to components shortages, drastic cost increases (priced 28C256 EEPROMs lately?), a lockdown in China, and insufficient time to correct for those things, there will be limited availability on some of the kits. Campus Map VCF East 2022

So it's fine for the coming event. But the problem I see, is that your guests are on foot and in cars. They need to see the actual walkways and streets, so they can follow them, to get from point to point. The photos of trees *block view of those streets and walkways*. So this map doesn't show parts of them. So they don't see a clear path, the paths that are on the ground in front of them. Solution? Cut and paste on the image, pieces of road. Smaller issues. The intersection of Marconi Blvd and Marconi Rd might include a caption: "to Rt. 18". You might include a marker on the map pointing to "North" (not so useful in New Jersey). Will dealers be in "exhibits" or "consignment"? You don't show "the gate" from the parking area, it's a common point of reference. Will the "guard shack" be used for any purpose at this event? It's not named. And an odd thing: calling the section of 9001 "dining room" may make visitors think it's a place where you *eat*. My memory is faulty, but wasn't that area called other things like "the ballroom"? Or call it nothing, but leave the rectangle mark, for this map. This is a judgement call. These are suggestions, not complaints. I'm not being "negative". There may be no time for changes, that's fine. Back when machines were fun, we had Rube, Heath and Rowland In the USA, we call it a "Rube Goldberg machine". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rube_Goldberg_machine In the UK, it's a Heath Robinson or Rowland Emett. https://youtu.be/1S82q60qGtc Emett's Computer (1966) Inventor Rowland Emett is seen working on a mechanical automated 'computer'; commissioned as a show piece for a famous computer firm. He fits a bone with a small lampshade and adds a wheel to the end. Various shots show 'The Forget-Me-Not Computer'; an amazing and surreal contraption with many turning wheels and moving parts. Small balls revolve around china heads, a currant bun is lowered into an information feeding bowl, mechanical birds punch holes in playing cards, and so on. Hi everyone, Since I am packing the van for my trip east for VCF East, I wanted to gauge interest in this monitor before I pack it since it is large & not too light. For those not familiar with this monitor, the link below from LaCie details the pertinent information. <https://www.lacie.com/lacie-content/datasheet/blueIV_en.pdf> This monitor is in very nice shape, just a little dusty. It will be cleaned before I transport it. It can sync with Macs or PCs. The it can handle horizontal frequencies from 30khz to 140khz. FS at VCF East

I'll be bringing a complete ASR 33 with tape reader, pedestal, manual and several rolls of tape and paper. I'll consider any serious offer. I have not had it on in several years. Pictures available on request. I'll also have a Tandy 2000, several monitors, a Dorio terminal, and a couple of 286 era machines. FS/FT At VCF East 2022

All, I have a few things that I'd like to sell or trade at VCF East, I'll start the list with these three: Osborne 1 --------- Repaired, works, comes with diskettes written out from images. Pretty sure we did a complete recap on this one. Drives cleaned and alignment checked. It has a double-density add on board that we couldn't get working, which is included but currently removed. I believe it has the 80 column mod board. Includes one of those modems that goes in the diskette storage slot. Case is somewhat yellowed. Sun SPARCserver 4/330 --------------------- Cleaned, working, power supply de-RIFA'ed (quite a job to get it out and apart!). NOS 2.1GB 3.5" SCSI disk installed, clean install of SunOS 4.1.4. 32MB RAM on the motherboard. I have a third-party RAM expansion board but it's got a bad bit on it somewhere and I can't find a manual. NVRAM rebuilt using one of our repair boards. 150 MB QIC tape drive disassembled, cleaned, lubricated, and working, though it's a bit loud compared to some of my others. I have an ALM-2 I could probably be convinced to include. Upgraded Macintosh 512K ----------------------- Your usual Mac 512K except it's got one of those Mac Rescue SCSI/4MB RAM upgrade boards that grabs the 68K! Also Plus ROMs so it can boot SCSI. Runs SSW 6.0.8 just fine. Floppy drive cleaned, I don't think this one needed a new gear. Comes with another external floppy and original carry case. I have an Apple HDSC 40 box that can go with it, some animal pried it apart and pried the HDA out of the drive's frame inside, so basically it's wrecked and would just be a nice box to put a SCSI2SD in. Keyboard and mouse included. All the bits are original to the unit, looks like someone used it in the 80s for writing college papers. Please reply off-list with interest/offers. I won't bring these systems unless I've got a definite buyer as I'm picking up a bunch of stuff from Ian and won't have space in the car. Thanks, Jonathan

One day wrist bands versus multiple day wrist bands

Hello! I see that the droid who writes the tickets says that we are doing one day ones versus the idea of multiple days at once ones. And it says here:(Quoting from the ticket droid.) "We are doing one day tickets only this year because: 1) Wristbands are easier to manage and less confusing with a different color per day rather than per type of ticket (i.e. 1 day, 2 day, 3 day). 2 Day tickets in particular could be 3 combinations (i.e. Fri & Sat, Sat & Sun, Fri & Sun). 2) Attendance Count It's easier to count the daily attendance. We need to know that for fire marshal rules as well as for our general knowledge and tracking accurate attendance numbers. So one day tickets make it much easier to track. 3) Cost The cost of running the show has increased. We need more money to pay for our expenses." Normally I'm the one who turns up one day, that is the Saturday. Tony Scara passed on April 1

If you are from NJ and have been to Ham events you may know of Tony Scara. He was a computer tech who lived in Piscataway NJ. He was a collector and fan of vintage technology. He worked for Electronic Associates, Inc. (EAI), he also worked for another computer company that I forget right now before joining Rutgers University working on computers there. He had a whole house of machines that slowly dwindled away as people bought them. I couldn't believe his collection. I purchased a number of items from him ( one of the northstar horizon in VCF's collection came from him as well as an EAI computer), during that time we got to talking and started a friendship. I brought him to VCF which he enjoyed but he couldn't walk too much because he was in his 80s. We stopped and instead I would share photos and we would talk about machines back then. I didn't get to see him much in the last few years because of COVID and because he was in his 90s now and so we would talk on the phone. He didn't get to hang out with us, but he was one of us. He really enjoyed talking about old technology. I know other people have bought from him, I know other people have met him. I hope you have as fond memories as I do

Apple II Classroom at VCF East - April 22, 23, 24

Hi Everyone, For years, I've dreamed of recreating an Apple II classroom at VCF East. This was all planned to happen in April of 2020, but, of course, the best laid plans... With partners in crime Tony Bogan, Dean Notarnicola, Stephen A. Edwards and Javier A. Rivera we're going to try again for April of 2022 at VCF East - April 22, 23, 24 - at InfoAge Science & History Museums in Wall, NJ. Classes will include Retrobriting, Joystick Repair (bring your broken Apple II joysticks!), Intro to 6502 Assembly, Intro to Apple BASIC, Advanced 6502 Assembly and many more! Most excitingly, various classes will run all three days, carefully spaced to avoid the larger events, so consider planning on attending for all three days, if you can! Or just stop by during lunch time and play some Apple II games.
