I'm looking for volunteers for VCF East for planning before the show, setup before the show, during the show and breakdown after the show. Please e-mail if you would like to be a volunteer. Some possible areas for volunteer: PLANNING CONSIGNMENT A/V FRONT DESK SETUP BEFORE THE SHOW BREAK DOWN AFTER THE SHOW To have some idea of what is needed day by day: PLANNING: starting months before the show until the show setup. There is a checklist of more than 50 items which are too numerous to list here. Data extraction from a Micropolis 1325D

Someone is looking to extract data from a Micropolis "1325D", which came from a DEC Pro-380. He is unsure of its internal condition. It has not run for many years, possibly a decade or two. He is still working on getting the computer itself online, and would like to get the hdd dumbed if possible. Anyone have any experience with this? Docent volunteers needed in VCF museum

Hello everyone, Docenting is a great way to support VCF and learn about artifacts. We have an ongoing need to have docents in our museum Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 12PM to 5PM. Right now we have Bill Inderrieden every Wednesday, Deborah every Saturday and me every Sunday. We need more docents in the mix to give us days off or to other VCF related activities. Also in the summer Deborah will be going to an internship, so we will need a replacement on Saturdays. If you are coming from far, we will allow you to stay in the dorm overnight at VCF's expense. We would just need sufficient advanced notice. There are many things that can be done while waiting for visitors like on a project or even help improve the artifacts with great demos or specific projects. You don't need to do it every week. You could do it once a month, once every two months, whatever. The important thing is to have more docents in the rotation so that the regular docents can have a day off to do VCF things or personal things. We will schedule you in. If you are interested in volunteering, then please contact me. If you have any questions, then let me know and I would be happy to answer them. Tektronix 2213A scopes for sale

I have two Tektronix 2213A oscilloscopes for sale, FOB VCE East (April 22-24). These two scopes were used in a university environment, and are in working condition: controls fairly clean, sharp display, some tape and sticker residue. The lever on the Vertical Mode channel selector on unit 1 has broken off, but there's enough of a nub that it's easily switched. These scopes will be at VCE East on April 22-24 for pickup. Hello everyone, I appreciate all the feedback, comments, and thoughts. Whether they are positive, negative or neutral they are all appreciated and heard. There are undoubtedly others who feel the same way as all of you with various thoughts and opinions. This is the third time that we have run a swap meet and each time we learn from the experience. This was also the first indoor one, so lots of growing pains. We started out not knowing how to do a swap meet but having general event planning. Somethings worked well, some not so well. Each time we learned from our mistakes and made things better the next time. I will be taking all of what was discussed here when I plan the next swap meet for October 8, 2022. 16 station MidiMaze Atari FPS @ VCF East 2022

Hello, An idea came to mind as a friend was repairing a bunch of Atari 8bit systems. There is a game called MidiMaze, where you can network up to 16 Atari 8bit (and supposedly ST systems) together. It's a first person shooter with smiley faces. I can find talk of 11 station system being setup, but was thinking it would be cool to do a 16 player station @ VCF. I am having PCBs made right now for all the carts, all of the midi interfaces, as well as fujinet boards for machines. I can definitely populate the carts and midi interfaces, will try to do Fujinets depending on ESP32 availability. It requires XL or XE, 64K of RAM. I have 3 machines, my friend has ~7. So we would be looking for the final systems to fill out this project. I have a spreadsheet I will post once I get my counts and Reggies system count. The current idea/dream is to run on physical Midi interfaces for the first half of VCF, then cut over to fujinet where the midi network is created over TCP/IP. We won't be loading the game from fujinet I don't think since we will have the carts and the fujinet version of the game requires a RAM expansion. Just easier to run carts. Will try to use an automated script to hit the web servers on the fujinet based on DHCP lease MAC address info and autoconfigure it all. Thoughts? Hype? How many Atari XL/XE does VCF have? - Ethan

I'm having a hard time understanding what you want. It sounds like you want to have early access to the show. Which you can do - all you have to do is pay the vendor admission fee. You chose not to. This is simply how swap meets and hamfests work. I can understand the frustration, not getting a chance at something, or seeing someone else walking off with something you wanted to buy, but, that's just how sales of anything work. You can't not allow vendors to have early access to buying stuff from each other, because, well... they have to be in there early in order to set up. Not to mention, most of the sellers already know each other. Many trades and sales were worked out days ago. One source of frustration that I see a simple solution to, is how many sales happened before the show, privately, via email, based on uploaded spreadsheets and lists of things vendors were going to bring for sale. Sure, it's frustrating if you're not checking the spreadsheets regularly, and miss out that way - but what's worse is when the item in question is physically at the show, there at a table as if it's out for sale, with no way of knowing that it's already been sold. I know at least one person that stood at a vendor's table for an hour, waiting for the vendor to return, trying to buy an item, only to find that it had been sold days before. Simple solution to this. If something is sold, either don't bring it in to your table, or put a SOLD sign on it. It should be easily clear to anyone walking around if an item is available or not. Survey Results of Swap Meet 2022 Feb

So Rick Lewis our newest volunteer to join our group asked to help do a survey for the swap meet. It was simple, and not necessarily comprehensive, but has some useful information. He wants to help me develop more surveys to help me plan, organize and focus the events that we organize. This was our first attempt, so it is a good start. Here's the results of the survey at the swap meet on 25 Feb 2022: 50 participants were asked two questions at the entrances to the swap meet rooms - all attendees, no vendors. Q1. Have you been to a VCF swap meet before? [ Y/N ] Q2. How did you find out about this swap meet? Results: - The majority (70%) were first-time attendees, having not been to a previous swap meet. - The *VCF Website* (38%) was the greatest source of knowledge about the swap meet by a factor of nearly 3 times more than the second source (*Other; From a Friend*) at 14%. - 12% knew about the event from the amateur radio club, matching the number who heard about it from social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) - The VCF Flyer (0%) and the VCF Mid-Atlantic List were not productive sources. My 2c... I was not at the swap meet, but I can give some insight into the hundreds of hamfests I've been to (take it or leave it as to the applicability of these experiences). First, they all charge entrance fees even for buyers. It can be modest, but they all do it. This is, after all, a swap meet. If it was just an educational exhibit and you want to encourage attendance from non-vintage computing visitors, then I can see the value in free attendance. But this is for like-minded people to buy and sell stuff, so I would consider a nominal entrance fee for buyers as well. Second, in the world of hamfests, the people who buy tables (sellers) get first crack at the booty. Period. Some hamfests "discourage" trading before the gates open, but it always happens. There was a period in my life when I was a net buyer of stuff and I wanted the choicest items. For myself and my friends, if we wanted access to the good stuff, we bought our own vendor pass and entered early with the other vendors, even when we weren't selling anything. Others at these hamfests are not in a rush to buy the choicest items (the current period of my life) and so we're happy to come in with all the other buyers. Bottom line: Want access to the best stuff? Pony up the extra dough for a vendor ticket and join the party. Don't care about the best stuff and are happy with whatever stuff is still available? Come in with all the buyers. “One person’s trash is another’s treasure” holds true here. What one may consider a golden discovery may have been overlooked by many others. I was finding things I wanted well into the swap meet. Speaking strictly for myself, my three tables were not nearly enough space to display all I had for sale, so it came out in batches over the course of the morning. Persistence was rewarded for those who came back for second or third looks. Swap Meet feedback: How did it go?

I attended the swap meet, arriving "late" to avoid the presumed early crowd and rush (Covid) and because my needs are modest. I was happy to get a variety of vintage Mac items as parts and for repair. I saw some oldest-vintage items, which is good, but I did not need them. And I bought some 20th century PC stuff to build some for-application systems, so that was good. Other than missing what apparently was a massive for-free pile, I was satisfied. People were glad to see me, and I them. So the base question on the event, is answered that it went well. Where's one room or another, where's the free stuff - I looked around and asked and found things. I'm glad things were not crowded; Covid. There was more variety than I expected; not enough really old computing but there was some. Radio? enh, there will be hamfests, but hamfests accommodate computing; computing should accommodate hams. When to close? It's already said: a significant part of sales is at the "don't want to take this home" end of the day. Four hours for the event is reasonable; set a soft close so people can hunt a little harder for a little longer. I'm glad the event didn't start at 6AM. A few people urged for free admissions for buyers. I'll be blunt - that's entirely expected and expresses self-interest. If buyers want fleamarkets to attend, it's in their interest to pay a few dollars to support the people who run them. Their payback is fun, community, and savings on purchased items. If you have questions, ask hams who run hamfests; ask people who ran events (or not) during the worst of Covid. When I saw there was no admission fee for buyers (me), I bought a couple of $2 stickers from Jeff - just to support the event. Too much money? What? I spent more on gas, I spent more on food. Hindsight being 20-20 I agree it would have been helpful if the cadets at the gate had a stack of printouts of the swap-meet aerial view with rooms pointed out to give to people entering. I 2nd the sentiment that it could have been spread out more. I saw a comment that it could have been packed tighter, but in my opinion there wasn't enough room to maneuver in the main room where Jeff was. Scottie and I really enjoyed it. The only thing I bought was a RAM upgrade for my PC, but that's more a reflection of having too much stuff at home already. I understand that most of the action happened at 8, but we're more casual buyers. We arrived around 10-10:30 and stayed until about 1. If it closed at 12, we probably wouldn't have made the 45 minute trip. Sorry, but Saturday AM sleep is a higher priority 😊. You might consider shifting the whole time window forward 2 hours (10-4 instead of 8-2) if possible. It wasn't clear where to go upon arrival since there was a lot of activity near the gate. We went that way, which took us to the "free stuff" room, then the food room, and finally the "real" swap rooms. This was probably backwards from what was intended, so I think a sign in the parking lot directing VCF people to the main entrance would have been good. It was crowded. Charging vendors and using those funds to underwrite the cost of the event reduces the entry barrier and maximizes engagement. Vendors don't mind (some view it as the cost of early access, while others see it as simply the funds needed to justify the event), and attendees have little excuse not to attend. Of course, if traffic gets too high, attendance fees can help manage it, so it can be useful as well. To my mind, the event is nothing without the vendors and a perk of being a vendor should be having early access to other vendors especially since we want vendors manning their table during open to public hours. Whatever "official" hours we post, there will always be "unofficial" hours. And it is worth mentioning that vendors are the only ones paying to be there. Volunteer hours for 2021

Hello everyone, InfoAge needs an estimate of volunteer hours for their tax return. It benefits them a lot. The more hours the volunteers report, the better for them. Not everyone is using https://www.trackitforward.com/ to keep track of their hours on a weekly basis, so estimation is necessary now. If you could estimate how many hours that you volunteered in 2021 including talking on the phone, meetings, docent duty, repair workshops, etc. Basically anything that you did for VCF. I know that this is hard to estimate for the whole year, but it really helps InfoAge a lot. It shouldn't take too long if you are only estimate. To make it easier just figure out how many times you did something (i.e. docent every week for 4 hours, repair workshop every month for 15 hours, etc.) and the number of hours you spent doing it. InfoAge needs this quickly as they are preparing their taxes, so if you can get it to me within a week, then they would appreciate it! You can send me a private e-mail with the number of hours for the year. Just wanted to say the swapmeet, to me , was a success. There was definitely quite a few vendors and the foot traffic was almost overwhelming before 11am. I sold a few items, bought a few, took home some free stuff, ( did I really need that) and talked to so many people that I am hoarse today. Just would like to thank all involved who made it happen!
