Sun3 VME Interest

All, I have the opportunity to purchase a lot of about 12 Sun3 machines, it looks like three 3/140s and 9 3/60s. Not sure how complete they are from pictures. There are some monitors in the lot, but it's unclear if they're ECL or the grayscale not-quite-VGA ones. The seller is starting with a pretty hefty asking price, to the point that I'm not willing to buy the lot with my own money on the hopes of being able to recoup the purchase price + freight. So, I'm doing an interest check: if you're seriously interested in purchasing Sun3 gear, which can be delivered locally, dropped off at VCF East, or shipped, please email me and express a) level of interest and b) what you'd think is a fair price/are willing to pay. Repair Workshop January 8 & 9, 2022

Sorry that I haven't put out announcements or updates, but I've been focusing on personal matters like a job search and resting after 5 months of working on VCF East. I'm starting to gear up as the new year approaches, so announcements will be forthcoming. I know that people have been busy of the holidays but wanted to send out this reminder that we are still having our repair workshop this coming January 8 & 9. I know that Omicron is a concern, so if anyone goes, then I recommend that they be fully vaccinated, and everyone wear a mask. InfoAge policy is that vaccinated people don't have to wear a mask while unvaccinated people do have to wear one. Anyone not feeling well should stay home. I know that 9059 CDL space fills up quickly. So, for anyone that wants to spread out, we have 9032-A available. Originally we weren't able to have access to 9032-A, but the model train guys say that they will have most of their stuff out of there. So, it will be available to our group. For the most part it was either for (UNIX) workstations or Macs. There had to be 1 or 2 for pcs, but that's just a guess. Anyway I want one. I'll worry about the details. I had a well used 19" Mac unit Yeats ago, and despite the wear in the phosphors, it was still sharp as a tack.

CDL is requesting the assistance of the VCF membership in deploying the fiber optic feed for the 9032-A/B and 9032-C/D data racks. Target date is January 15th, 2022 starting at 10:00 AM. The work was deferred due to conflicts with other users of 9032 November and December. Work will entail: * Laying out the fiber on the rear lawn of 9059, and between 9032 and second street. * Use of ladders to place the cable (if you have your own 8-12 foot step ladder, bring it!) * Attaching the fiber to buildings 9059 and 9032 with ty-wraps, using the hangers already deployed. * Entry to the cable vault on the rear of 9059, and the attic of 9032 to route the access point and camera cables. First homebrew computer project

Greetings Everyone, I'm Joe Giliberti. I had been a member of the original MARCH up until 10 or so years ago, when a personal issue prompted me to leave. It also didn't help matters that it took me more time than most to grow up into a responsible adult. Now that many things have changed and that I've been getting back into the hobby over the past few years, I've decided to come back. I keep making plans to get to events but something always seems to interfere. I'm really hoping I'll be able to get to the workshop on Sunday. Any who, in the past few years I've been getting more and more into the hobby, doing lots of reading to expand my knowledge beyond writing BASIC on my Apple IIe. I've decided that I want to take a shot at constructing a basic computer. Over the years, I've been amassing component parts from estate sales and one particularly lucky estate cleanout. Among other things, I've accumulated thousands of capacitors, resistors, transistors and diodes, hundreds of 7400 series TTL and quite a few microprocessors and support chips. I think I want to base the computer around an 8080. There are the two main reasons I want to go this route: -I have an 8080A and many of the support chips, most of which are of the early gold and white ceramic design. -Ultimately, I want the system to be capable of running CP/M Initially, I'm not looking to make it overly complicated. Ideally, I'd like to have a machine language monitor and TinyBASIC in ROM. I'd also like a serial connection for I/O and a cassette interface for mass storage. If someday I get really ambitious, I might look into things like video hardware and floppy disk mass storage, but I need to take care of the basics first I still need to do a lot more research and study before I start doing things like design and construction, but I would very much appreciate any suggestions or feedback on my plans for this endeavor. Ti-99/4a Motherboard Troubleshooting

Hello, do we have any members that can assist with Ti-99/4a motherboard troubleshooting? I've already checked most of the "low-hanging fruit" (voltages, clocks, overheated chips, traces, caps, troubleshooting steps etc.) and i've been looking at pulseview output of various things with one of those inexpensive 8-channel FPGA logic analyzers <https://www.amazon.com/KeeYees-Analyzer-Device-Channel-Arduino/dp/B07K6HXDH1> you can pick up off amazon for $13. This unit has the classic "black screen and tone of death" going on. So far I haven't been able to find anything wrong except the 9900 seems to go into a ROM/RAM R/W loop. Never makes it to the GROMS. Bart

VCF Swap Meet February 26, 2022

VCF will be doing a swap meet on February 26, 2022. It will obviously be an indoor swap meet. Since there is a big demand for our swap meet and we haven't had one in while we are scheduling one on February 26. We will be using the following buildings: 9010-D, 9032-A, 9001 (dining room). We will fill up spaces in that order (9010-D being first). Please bring your own table. Tables are not required, but recommended. A quick search on Vogons - pentium 3s are generally fully locked multipliers - can't go up or down. Xeons though could have their multipliers reduced. Engineering samples of p3 of course can do all sorts of things. I'm not sure if you can put a slot 1 CPU on a slot 2 board. Bios support at least would be required. I haven't dealt with Slot 2 processors, but with Slot 1 the clock speed is simply the product of the bus speed times the multiplier. Assuming that Slot 2 is similar to Slot 1 in that respect, a 1GHz CPU with a 133MHz bus speed runs with a 7.5 multiplier. Depending on your motherboard, the bus speed might or might not be configurable. The multiplier is typically programmed into the CPU and isn't something you can set yourself. This means that if you use that CPU in a motherboard configured for a 100MHz bus speed, you will effectively get a 750MHz CPU (100MHz bus clock times 7.5x multiplier). Aside from running at 750MHz rather than 1GHz it should work. If your motherboard has jumpers allowing the bus clock to be changed to 133MHz you will need to do that to get the CPU to run at full speed. -ken

Your First Modem? (was: Help me remember my first modem)

What was your first modem? Mine was a kit from Micromint in Long Island. It was around 1980 or so (I was about 13). My dad drove me to Cedarhurst, LI (I lived in Merrick, LI) to the Micromint sales office and bought this kit. It was an acoustic coupler, 300 baud kit, with an enclosure, a PCB and a bag of parts. I had low expectations that it would work when assembled. I spent a few days assembling and soldering everything. I think the time was around Christmas and my new brother-in-law was over. He was a post-grad at university of Texas at Austin and had a computer account (don't recall the computer). It was time to test it. Me, my brother-in-law and my father were all standing around my TRS-80 Model III and this newly built modem, trying to call into the computer system at UT Austin. I can't imagine what the bill was. I was adjusting one of the pots and then, like a miracle, there it was "WELCOME TO THE UT AUSTIN COMPUTING CENTER" I can't swear that is exactly what it said but you get the idea. We all jumped for joy. The darn thing worked as advertised. I think it had 103 on the front. Black plastic front, rest of it was metal and an external 48v DC power brick, 2 screws on the brick. I can't recall if the modem had screws or was hard wired. The museum was closed last weekend and will be closed this coming weekend. The train show seemed to be a great success with one to two hundred visitors per day in December. Today there were 35 visitors and Deborah was able to be docent due to being home from Rutgers for winter break. During down time, she started working on researching the different mice in our new mice exhibit. The mice exhibit artifacts were gathered and setup by Adam Michlin. Jeff Jonas took pictures of the mice and got the model numbers. Now Deborah will research them to find out what they are, why they are significant or interesting. Signs will be made after the research is done. If you are there for the repair workshop, stop by and see the mice exhibit. It's quite interesting the different mice in the exhibit. I had found this online for the TI. When VCFE suggested unusual operating systems I tried it but wouldn't run on mine. Probably due to the 3rd party hard disk controller. It does run on the VCF TI. Has anyone played with Concurrent CP/M-86 and is there anything interesting you have found to do with it?

I used it for a few years with my Apple ][+ before I retired it. I was an IBM customer engineer at the time and one of my customers gave me a Bell 212 unit (don’t remember the actual model #) so I upgraded to 1200bps at that time. I used that with a dual serial card for the Apple I built on a proto board to get online and to connect to a serial terminal. I wrote a very small machine language program to redirect the Cin (character in) & Cout (character out) routines to the serial port. The terminal allowed me to view the BBSes at 80x24 rather than the Apple’s 40 column display. Also, the only printer I had at the time was a screen printer attached to the aux port of the terminal so at least I could get a hard copy. The write up was published in the ACGNJ newsletter and Steve Ciarcia even referenced it in a future issue of his “Ask Byte” column in Byte magazine. I was thrilled to have a hardware guru like Steve reference something I built. Jeff

Mine was a Commodore VICModem 1600 (300 baud), but I didn’t get to use it much. I was able to dial into QuantumLink a couple of times, but that was about it. For significant regular use, my first modem was a 2400 bps modem bought from MacConnection. I _believe_ that it was a knock off Practical Peripherals device. I haven’t used this 3D printer in years, and the company disappeared about five years ago. It was working, but the heated bed was replaced and has not been used in a long time. Has some spare parts. It is definitely not a good place for someone new to 3D printing to start, but if anyone already has a 3 and is looking for a working unit to steal parts from, please let me know. Free to a good home. I’m in Burlington County NJ, and it available for pick-up or I can drive a reasonable distance to meet someone. Bob

Quick update on CDL: As we emerge from Covid mode, CDL will again begin accepting makerspace memberships in 2022. The annual fee is $225.00, with monthly being slightly higher To answer two questions that were recently asked: 1. How does the above membership impact VCF and the computer repair workshops? Zero Impact. The workshop fee addressed both the InfoAge user fee and a small stipend for CDL. 2. Why does CDL charge a stipend? Tools, small wares, and consumables.
