Repair Workshop Report 2021-02-06 & 07

Sorry for the late report, but been busy the last few weeks. This is from last month's repair workshop. So Saturday 2/6 we had about 10 to 15 people come. Lots of great stuff got accomplished. Dean worked on the TRS-80 Model 1 and will be installing a Gotek into it during the next repair workshop. Andy recorded some great video with Bill Dromgoole on the Univac. This was one of the best workshops, but I didn't write down all the details. Maybe others can fill in what we did last month. Sunday 2/7 was a lot less people because of the snowstorm, but 4 brave souls rode out the storm before returning home. I was able to count and fold all the t-shirts and polos so they will be for sale at the VCF Swap Meet on April 24. Wow, do we recall the 'Junk yard' (meant lovingly) with rose colored glasses? I'll venture a guess that I started going to TCF in 83, though I did hear of it in '80. I remember all the good junk (hence the junk yard moniker) and recalled drooling over many things from terminals to complete racks of PDPs and the spare parts were incredible. But each year more and more of the retired equipment dwindled and eventually retired equipment was sold to retired equipment businesses who sold it back to those who retired it in the first place because some of the systems couldn't be replaced*. Say late 80's By that time the PC revolution had taken over and everyone had to have a PC. I think my friends and I must have purchased 12 complete systems from parts and spent the rest of the weekend assembling them for others. By this time the Junk Yard became the Scrap Yard as the rest of the good stuff wasn't showing up as TCF had become more PC centric. And as others have noted most of the good stuff was traded/sold before things really opened up. Then TCF moved to MCC (Mercer) for a while (got a nice Z80 starter kit and Applied Micro Z80 emulator for $10). Then it moved to MCC (Middlesex) then Ken Gordon (?) took over, then back to The College of NJ (College name changed in there somewhere). Now it's mostly the talks and a really small swap meet. Now having bad mouthed history I do thing that VCF could do something like this with VCF East (or West or xxx). Won't be the glory days of the late 70's and early 80's but it would be a yearly pilgrimage for the faithful. :-) I have a lot of fond memories of TCF. Even a time when waiting in line an some bruiser went on a rant about waiting in line behind these 'geeks'. I threatened to adjust his criminal records for minor park and speeding to felonies and them losing the records. Yea, I sure miss those days. I was a vendor at TCF for over 40 years starting in 1978. TCF was the highlight of my year and preparing for it was my version of "getting ready for the BIG GAME". I always took the Friday before off to test, label and load the truck to the roof. I sold & got a lot of bargains over the years and had a great time meeting fellow enthusiasts. The flea market really got killed when TCF moved to March and the "flea market" got moved to a conference room. I continued to sell at TCF but in 2019 they told the vendors they had to be packed up & out of the room by 3pm. With 4 tables of stuff, I had to start packing at 2pm. I vowed that would be my last TCF which proved to be a moot point since I moved to Tucson, AZ in early 2020. I am glad to see that others have similar fond memories of the TCF flea market. TCF! Man I miss it sorely, at least how it used to be! I attended first I think around 1995/1996 at Mercer County Community College, and I was blown away. So so so many good memories, so many things bought and sold. Having my friends sleep over so we could wake up at 4am and start the trek from the Philly burbs, driving my Dads Ramcharger loaded with a trailer full of stuff, and coming up with a trailer full of new stuff. Some of the new stuff came from the dumpsters, which had no less than 5 people in them at most times LOL, myself included. If anyone has pics of the former TCF, I wonder if we can set up a shared album they can be uploaded to? I'd love to see some. I have I think a couple pics, but literally just that.I remember the crowds coming in, I think they'd bus people in from Manhattan and other areas, and they had a "locker" area where people could stash their buys. I remember seeing all sorts of crazy stuff in the pile including 21" CRT monitors at the time. I also still have the TCF book from 1995 (and a few others). Each roughly 45 minute episode will focus on a different technology, from glue to switches to bearings and more. Hunkin says, "I now learn a lot from watching practical YouTube videos and realize they can teach the sort of informal tips that used to be part of traditional apprenticeships." Part of what made The Secret Life of Machines so compelling was the way that Hunkin, like many great teachers, combined his engineering knowledge with strong storytelling. It'll be exciting to see what he has in store for the new series. The Secret Life of Components debuts March 4 on Hunkin's YouTube channel.

Here are the printers I fought at VCF: Anyone familiar with the Diablo? It powers up, is very clean but the print-head won't budge. Can you please send technical details of the printout? Ascii file? Characters per line? Is the printout file ready and all they need is a print or does thenoutput need to be formatted first? I recall you said it was roughly a hundred or so total pages? Maybe someone near the museum can look for the two DECwriter III's that might still be around the warehouse, or some other wide carriage printer there. If you put a new ribbon on one of those and attach to an old pc running word perfect paginated to 132 character lines you could at least try to print this at infoage. I bet there is some green bar in the warehouse When the file and details are available I would be happy to at least try to do of it too. Bill

Alas I'm in the opposite situation. I'm in driving distance (1.5 hrs) from the museum, but the only dot matrix printers I have are 80 col, with ribbons of doubtful value. So I don't think I have the right stuff. However, if there's narrow paper available and it will serve the need, I'll be happy to pull them out and test them. RASCSI scsi emulator device

Reading over these RASCSI devices, I decided to pick up one to see how it works with some other classic UNIX systems, where I'm currently using a SCSISD (SGI, DEC and AUX). The performance seems to be a nice boost when used with Pi4. https://github.com/akuker/RASCSI/wiki/Benchmarks It will be nice to have an intelligent alternative to the SCSISD. This device reminds me of DavidG's wonderful MFM emulator. I'm hoping that with access to a real PI doing things like imaging of drives will be much easier than it currently is. -andy

Personal IRIS PSU repair

Hey, all. Just thought I'd reach out and bother everyone to see if there's anyone else out there who's dealt with a dead Personal IRIS PSU. Apparently they pretty much all go eventually, but I haven't been able to find anything about what the common failure modes are. Hoping there's someone with some thoughts or experience, because I'm massively a novice when it comes to power supply diagnosis.

Neil, Unless you need the speed or connectivity, I would prefer messing with copper. Just too many strange incompatibilities with optical SFPs and various vendors equipment when you go optical. Things that should work, don’t, and visa versa. Wasn’t that terrible in our lab at work, because we had loads of different SFPs, cables and switches to change out to try to get things working, but at home, that sort of experimenting will most likely cost you money. At work, it mostly cost us time, and it was just part of the cost of doing business. After a while, it became a pretty routine thing for us to swap SFPs or switch ports when optical links didn’t come up when connecting new gear. When Service Providers do deployments of new equipment, they trial every component in the system before rollout for a reason. Just my two cents… Mike Willegal
