Sunday Repair workshop 8/2 Cancelled

A lot of people had plans already this weekend and were already planning on coming to the workshop on Aug 15 & 16. Nobody is signed up as of now, so I'm cancelling the repair workshop for this Sunday Aug 2. Saturday is still available. Anyone can still repair stuff on Saturday, but no one is signed up as of now so we will be doing the watch party Saturday and working on some museum repairs ourselves. I had purchased an MST-80 off eBay a few years ago and the primary reason was I wanted the clean white/gold ceramic 8080 for use in my IMSAI. I replaced that CPU with a brown ceramic 8080 and resold it to another list member for my original purchase price. One cool feature of the keypad & monitor program is that data can be entered/displayed in either Hex or Octal just by toggling the H/O key on the pad. I think this is very handy as many people learned the 8080 opcodes in octal (like the Altair panel is laid out) while other folks like me learned them in hex. I worked for IBM and was trained to use hex notation while some of my friends who used mini's like the PDP-8s used octal. I thought this was a very handy feature to implement. They're not expensive in ebay, in fact this model is popular and cheap, a lot of people like these and I am sure you'll find people at the workshop with experience. Tables are first come, first served at this point. So there is no guarantee of availability Please e-mail if you are not sure if there are any spaces available. We are also doing a watch party of VCF West's virtual show starting at 12PM August 1 until 9PM. The workshop is $10 *per* person, *per* day. This is InfoAge's rule and not our decision. So that means for two days it is $20. Sign up to guarantee a table. DATE: August 1 & 2, 2020 LOCATION (two locations): InfoAge: 2201 Marconi Road, Wall Township, NJ 1) Building 9059 (CDL Hackerspace - Formerly IXR) AND 2) Building 9032-A (Old workshop area in main building) TIME: Saturday START time == 10 A.M. END time == 11PM. Sunday START time == 10 A.M. and END == 5 P.M. This honestly reminds me: who runs the list at the moment, and would it make sense, with the modern day and age, to disable the automatic stripping of attachments? Kaypros are notorious for their proprietary CRT controller chip failing, but I dunno if that's all Kaypros or just the one I have (a 2X). Decent CRT TV FTAGH in Philly

Hey all, One of the other things currently consuming much space in the basement is a 25” or so late-‘90s Sony TV which takes RF, composite and component (but curiously not S-Video) and works pretty well for vintage consoles/computers. It was my main driver for NES/SNES/Commodore/etc until I finally got a proper Commodore monitor this winter. Using eBay SOLD auctions as a reference, $200 may be on the high side of fair pricing if it works and just needs a cleaning. But there is certainly room for haggling down to $150 or so. I was having a conversation with somebody who has some computer equipment that I need to go take a look at. He has a Kaypro II with dual Floppy drives built into the main unit and a keyboard. It doesn’t look like it’s in the greatest shape because there may be rust or just a lot of dirt on the case from the pictures he sent me. So my question to those who know more about it than I do: Is his asking price of $200 for the KayPro II a good deal or not? AlphaServers free to a good home

Hey all, I’m moving down to Maryland in about a month and the new house doesn’t have quite as much basement space as the old one. I need to thin the herd a bit. I have two AlphaServers I’d be glad to pass on to a good home; one 2100 (with one CPU, 2GB RAM) and one 1000A (which I think has 64MB RAM, but see below). The 1000A has a slightly flaky CPU (EV4/266) which might just need to be reseated or might need replacing; it was working fine a year ago, but is now stopping partway through the boot sequence. If you’re able to source it, it can take a much faster EV5 CPU and a lot more RAM. I have quite a few spare drives for both, which is good because they’re SCSI drives that are starting to drop like flies. The DEC drive carriers are just sliiiightly offset from standard SCSI spacing, which makes it difficult to swap other drives in. Anyway, I’d love to see these go to a good home; I don’t have time for them at the moment, and I definitely don’t have space for them (the 2100 is the size of a small dorm fridge, and the 1000A is like a double-wide full tower, mostly owing to the space for disks in both; unloaded, they’re not super heavy, but big enough to be awkward). I did fit both of them along with some other servers in the back seat and trunk of a 2006 Honda Civic a while ago, though, so they’re transportable. Let me know if you’d like them. I’m not sure I’ll be able to make it out to the workshop on the 17th, and everything needs to be out of the house by the 14th, so please be able to pick it up from Philadelphia (if someone is willing to store it in escrow for me so much the better). - Dave

Computer, free to a good home

I have a Gateway "pizza box" desktop computer that was given to me. I can't figure out the model number, but here are the specs: build date: 2002 cpu: Celeron 1.4GHz RAM: two SDRAM slots. They each have a 512MB stick, however, the BIOS will only recognize one or the other of them. Either one works in either slot, but both won't work together. (This is a show stopper for running Linux). disk: IDE. I've installed a *BAD* 6GB disk as a place holder, because the mounting method is non-obvious. The original disk was owned by a friend and I don't feel right giving it away, even if I wiped it. CDROM (works) Floppy (un-tested) On the motherboard: video, sound, Ethernet, USB, plus PS/2 keyboard and mouse sockets. In theory, the computer can boot from USB or the network. This system is too limited for me to actually use for something, but it would make a good MSDOS box. It had Windows XP on it, and ran "OK", if slowly. The computer is in Jackson, NJ, and I'm willing to drive about 30 minutes to meet up with you. Or I can drop it at the next VCF Workshop and you can pick it up there. Request for Information on Teletype LPW 300

All; I have been asked by my one of my other volunteer organizations to send out requests for information on the following: Teletype Model LPW 300RA with a Model 1433 paper roll winder. (Escutcheon was very small. Stamping was light & my eyesight is getting dimmer. I am assuming I got the numbers right.) This version of Teletype has no paper tape reader or punch, nor does it have a keyboard. It is a receiving printer only.It has "BELL SYSTEM" logo printed in the front off the slope of where a keyboard usually resides. It was used in conjunction with a melt flow furnace at Bethlehem Steel Corp. It printed out the percentages of content of other elements in the molten iron. Unknown whether it works, ergo the reason for information, schematics, mechanical maintenance etc. This artifact was donated to the National Museum of Industrial History, and the historian would like to get it running.Photographs can be acquired upon my next trip up to Bethlehem, PA. I hate to be negative, but if your friend doesn't have the love for antiquity that we share, a PIII era Dell is not going to serve as a daily driver. The prices are a little high on eBay because they are starting to come into fashion as cheap retro-game machines. The defacto old-machine rescue OS in linux( Lubuntu : https://lubuntu.net/ ) is on the edge of dropping support for the 32-bit processors. It'll work, but page loading simple things like Facebook and Gmail that everyday users need is a bit painful. If money is an issue, I usually recommend 5-8 year old netbooks running Chrome for everyday users on a super-tight budget. They can be had from $80--to-free, depending how important a battery is. If you're at a real loss, I have a 2012 Acer C710 that I was going to flush and clean for ebay. I'd be happy to pass it along. Older Dell laptop

I have an older Dell laptop that belongs to a friend. He has no money so I’m trying to do this cheap as possible. I’m trying to get an older dell laptop updated to get on internet but it seems a lost cause. Laptop works great (XP) and current browser loads some pages but can't figure what OS will work well with this configuration. I’m sure more memory will be needed but I need you find what OS and browser will work well first. It is PIII 1ghz, 10gig hdd, 256k 133mhz ram. Nvidia mobile video. VCF museum re-opening August 1

InfoAge and all their museums including the Vintage Computer Federation Museum will be opening August 1 for regular museum hours and days: Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday from 1PM to 5PM. Keep in mind that you must go through the front desk if you are visiting any of the museums because they will take your temperature, make sure that you are wearing a mask and take down your contact information (for contact tracing purposes). I have too many computers. This is a Mac G4 "Quicksilver". I've replaced the (dead) power supply with a non-Apple supply (with wiring mods to make it work). It has Ubuntu 16.04 installed on it, because I was using the computer in my guest room, and guests should have a modern browser. The case is in good to excellent cosmetic condition. I'll wipe my account off the machine and give you the root password, and then you can either use it as is, or install MacOS 9 on it (or whatever). It has a 40GB disk and 640MB of RAM. Looking for CompuPro CPU-Z

All – Yet another project afoot…trying to get my 8” SA-851 drives working with my IMSAI. My configuration is highly customized using 5.25” drives in place of 8” (and part of two VCF presentations). As a test, I wanted to throw together a small CompuPro system to see if I can get disk images from the Maslin archive working. The only board I don’t have is the CPU-Z board. I have an Interfacer 1, plenty of RAM boards, and the Disk 1 controller. Does anyone have a spare working CPU-Z board that they could part with? Even if I could just use it for testing, that’d be great, but I could do a trade also. I have a ton of spare boards and a few other interesting things. Please contact me off-list. Thanks! OT: Hard Drive Data recovery using DDRescue

So I knew that DD Rescue on Linux was good at data recovery, but it has been a long time since I have used it so I'm just a beginner. Ian has used it a lot and knows lots of tricks to maximizing data recovery from hard drives. I have a hard drive that was with my desktop since 2011, so it has seen a lot of use. It is in the process of failing. Ian used the command like this: ddrescue -v -v -d /dev/sde3 salvage.img salvage.log He can explain a little better about what it is doing with these switches, but this way you can stop the process and pick up where you left off and it will continue. It uses the log file to keep track of things. So I ran the process which took about 36 hours or so. In the end I recovered 99.99% of my data with 40MB lost. Pretty amazing! It recovered almost all of the 1.4 Terabytes of data with about 40MB of sectors with errors. Pretty amazing! To recover a little about another 3MB of data, I had to unplug and restart the drive because it seemed to lock up. Then I ran another command to work from the end of the disk going backwards and to try 5 times to recover as much data as possible that had errors in the sectors. This was the command used: ddrescue -v -v -d -r5 -R /dev/sde3 salvage.img salvage.log On the windows 10 side I used OSFMount to mount the image and then copy to another hard drive. Thanks to Ian for helping me with the commands and to Jonthan Sturges for lending the cable to connect to my computer. I would have lost it all without your help. It's truly amazing!
