I think the primary point of the poster in-place, is to suggest the extensive history. Not to document every bit for every visitor who is interested. While magnifiers and better lighting have merits, I have additional suggestions. 1) Post nearby, a Web link, maybe also a QRL-code or whatever-the-hell they call those blocky-things that 'phones can scan, to the Web site of the producer of the poster. If the Museum is producing a take-away document for visitors, include a reference there. 2) If said poster is of interest, perhaps the Museum can offer some for sale? For the usual reasons museums do that. 3) Make available to docents (or whatever VCFed calls museum volunteers on duty), a form of the poster in larger type, in booklet form. Those interested can request a look at the booklet for detailed reading. This may also encourage sales of the poster. I presume, the effort to enlarge, paginate and print one copy is not onerous. The Museum has a color printer; I presume a PDF of the poster is available. All this said: this poster is not the product of the VCFed, it's an item bought for display and for purpose. But let's "feed the hungry bee". If visitors show interest in the item, the VCFed might consider making copies available, provide a more readable version on-site, and glean income from doing so. As for a magnifier, they and a string are available for some few dollars. But they could become a nuisance for any kid that wants to use it as a tether-ball. I think my suggestions are accommodations which serve the purpose; plus offer revenue and/or take-homes for visitors. My several cents, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Kind of off subject: Need Help running cable for VCF

Hi Folks, * CDL has the network cable to support building 9010 in place. We could use a hand running the network cables from the VCF area into the next "H" section (9010B) Would be a total of three cable, two for cameras in the hallway, and one to the firewall in the VCF rack * Other projects include cutting unistrut and mounting the rack on the brick wall in 9010B. Reforming capacitors

Bill S. says: "The only issue was that all of the [Processor Tech SOL] unregulated S-100 supplies were out of spec. This turns out to be a design issue, with a specific engineering note to address it (adding a bucking transformer) which I applied." - end quote Bill, for those not in-the-know: a "bucking transformer" reduces AC voltage by turning a transformer into an autoformer; by connecting the secondary in reverse and in series with the primary, to reduce the output voltage. One can also use a reducing transformer of course. That's too brief but some Web searching will explain further. Point being: many vintage computers of the 70's which use dem big transformers, expect line voltage to be 110 volts. Modern AC line voltage may be 120 volts; mine is about 122. I've had Heath/Zenith H89's blow up their regulator tantalums because the unregulated DC to their little DC regulators, exceeded the voltage ratings! Again, review H89 schematics for details. And of course, S-100 computers with non-switching power supplies and only a few S-100 cards to power, often produce excessively high unregulated DC voltages to the S-100 card DC regulators. As in IMSAI. I too have had to either a reducing transformer, rig a 12V AC transformer to "buck", and/or upgrade tantalum caps to higher voltage ratings (or replace same when they shorted). Or, just run the thing off a Variac. This was a good discussion. I will capture it for future reference, and possibly ask the participants privately if I can include their notes on my Web site; where I have similar information. Regards, Herb "pop!" Festivus Thank You everyone to another successful year!

Thanks to all the 60+ people that showed up to Festivus! It is a labor of love to create this event for everyone and enjoy camaraderie. It was the largest gathering we have had. Even the Americorps volunteers had fun joining us with food and games, and Cards Against Humanity. Thank you to Andy, Dmitry, Tony and others helping to setup at the beginning. Thank you Ian for all the effort in bringing and setting up the vintage games! Thank you Christian and many others for helping me cleaning up. I was pleasantly surprised to find that by 5PM, 95% of the cleanup was done. I got out of there by 6PM! It made my job a lot easier to have so many hands pitching in. Thanks to Bernie S for cooking the Perogies. Thanks to Jonthan for helping me cooking. It was extreme cooking on a vintage grill! ;) Thanks to Adam and Tony for setting up the VCF sell pile. VCF received lots of donations from everyone and that will help support projects in the museum. I hope that everyone got a chance to see the improvements in the museum, if not, then maybe at the next workshop. I was glad that the 12 sales tables worked out for everyone. Thanks to Christian Liendo for sharing the Commodore Amiga video and showing to us. The quick announcement turned town meeting was a great way for everyone to tell us ideas, ask questions and tell us what's on your minds. Let us know if you want us to again next year or a different time of year. Lots of great input. The Sunday breakfast at the OB diner worked out well. We will do it again next year. Please let me know what you liked, and if you want to suggest improvements, then e-mail me privately. I'm always looking for constructive criticism. Next workshop is January 25 & 26 at InfoAge in the CDL building. VCF East is April 24, 25, 26. the VCF iMac G3 doorstop: it works!

Somehow I ended up with the infamous iMac doorstop over the weekend during the Festivus festivities, so I figured I'd plug it in to see what happened. It actually works! Someone stole the RAM at some point, but I just plugged some random sticks I found on the top of the stack and it booted straight into Mac OS 9. There are some pretty prevalent monitor problems, it appears only the red gun is working and the picture is smeary, but the fact it even boots at all is pretty entertaining. I might lug it with me and display it next year if my exhibit idea works out. It's an interesting piece of VCF history, methinks. When mentioning the nice new Processor poster on Saturday I'd like to note that a visitor said it was pretty but was so small it was impossible to read. While he was older than I am I have to agree that I'd need really good glasses to see the processors. 2 suggestions, if we can we may want to see if we can get brighter lighting on posters and perhaps some way of magnifying the poster. BTW, the poster is very cool. Someone said they had a CoCo 1 case, please contact me at ncherry(a)linuxha.com. I am interested. On the boards I had with me at Festivus, the Motorola Boards do not have DAT (Digital Address translation) but it may be possible to add them with a bit of digital trickery. I'm researching this now. Dean did you have the information on the connectors for the EXORbus? I did a a search of ebay and found 2 devices but not the connectors. David Weins (of Sardis Technology fame) shared some documentation on the Motorola Modules. I now have most of the memory map for one of the boards I had there. He's also shared information on a CMS MPU board (not at Festivus) and his Sardis ST2900s (also not as Festivus). On the subject of conservation do we have a guide? I think that last word was this was being worked on. I've got the normal questions on copyright and how we copy some things like documentation in book form (assuming we have permission). I have lots of loose pages I can convert to PDF from my multi-function printer. But I don't want to shred a manual in book form. I've also data manuals from the 1980s that are several inches thick. It would be nice to know how to resize the pages to pf. Before I reform the large electrolytics in my Sol 20, I'd like to poll the collective as to the recommended procedure. I have a constant voltage/constant current DC supply, so I can set voltage and current limits. For those of you who have done this, what's your procedure? For a constant voltage/constant current supply, do you need a resistor in series with the cap? If so, typical value? What's the recommended max current during the reforming process? I've seen recommendations of 50ma and 100ma. What percentage of the working voltage do you initially take it to? How much do you raise it after the current drops? How long do you let it sit at each stage? I'm interested in hearing from folks who have actually done this, with a constant voltage/constant current supply. Thanks for your input! When the current falls to nearly nothing we increase the voltage another 10%. For very large electrolytics (60,000 uF) we had to leave them on the power supply for up to a week to get maximum capacitance. We also found that we get higher capacitance when reforming them at the operational voltage, and not at the rated voltage. -- Michael Thompson

Atari 1050 disk drive needed

Hello all - Would anyone happen to have an Atari 1050 disk drive/power brick I could borrow for Fesitvus? I am in the process of testing the two machines I'm bringing to display and have discovered neither of my 1050 disk drives power on. The power brick measures ok with no load, but it drops to zero as soon as I plug it in to the drive itself. I'm not sure if the problem lies with the drive or the power brick and I'm not sure I have enough time to figure out as I am leaving in a few hours.Thanks so much.CJ

I know I'm late to the party on this (been a busy few weeks between events, financials, health issues, getting a robot and having my mouth drilled) but I have a few things here between my work and collection that I would be interested in selling if there is any interest. In the collection we have a lot of x86 stuff, giant towers, compact boxes, a 386 system with it's original manual and MS-DOS 3 disk, some monitors, a few DEC tape drives, a Sun Sparcstation with PGT IMIX labeling on it, a VAX M38 which I'm mulling over selling, 2 Mac Classics I'm considering selling, and maybe more. I'll likely put up an album at some point soon for a better idea on things. Not planning on bringing everything but if there is anything that jumps out at anyone feel free to let me know off the mailing list.

(On that note -- Wouldn't mind picking up a legal dongle for Notator or Cubase for my Atari Mega 2 ST. The cracked copy of Notator I was playing with seems unstable. I emailed Steinberg asking if they would open the ST software to the public but never got anything back.)

Commodore IEEE Floppy Drive Needed

So, to make sure that I'm covered, I'm bringing my PET 4032 to Festivus, primarily to show off, but I'm looking for an IEEE floppy drive for it. (Re-starts around 10:30 A.M. Sunday morning) End about 5 P.M. on Sunday. **LOCATION** InfoAge Building 9010-D (Sandy Recovery Area)- (2201 Marconi Road, Wall Township, NJ) - It will be straight ahead once you enter through the gate. The door is marked Sandy Recovery and is up the steps. Code to get inside is 6502. **PARKING** InfoAge management wants us to park inside the campus, in a neat orderly row, between the Festivus building and the CDL hackerspace building (9059). The main parking lot remains available for guests of the Holiday Model Train Show. DO NOT COST INFOAGE MONEY! by leaving it open to confuse paying guests. Festivus Cleanup Crew Needed

I need help with Cleanup at Sunday after Festivus starting at 6PM on Sunday. It will go quickly if I get a few people. Last year I did all by myself (not fun!) VCF will buy Pizza for those staying to help clean up. I will be cleaning up throughout Festivus myself, but anyone that wants to help would be appreciated. FWIW, I was able to find Sterno at the Super Food Town grocery store by the Dunkin' Donuts a few years ago. In the past people have requested a chafing dish be made available and someone would bring sterno. Nobody as requested this as of yet. If anyone has a need for a chafing dish, then I need to know. It is pretty late in the game for me to check availability, but not too late. I would suggest that anyone let me know of their needs. Festivus Bad movies

A few years ago we had a contest to come up with the worst movie. A few years too late I have my pick. I will be showing it at Festivus. It will be a surprise. You will all think that it is horrible. I plan on using my laptop to show movies, etc. in the cafeteria. It will mostly be background noise and diversion since that room isn't conducive to movie watching or hearing what's on the TV very well. But, I also bought a FireStick and if anyone wants to watch movies in the lounge area, then I can make that available. The lounge area is more of a proper movie room because it is quiet, dark and has comfy chairs. I request half a table, please. I request half a table, because 1) is there any space left? 2) I have a plan. I'll do as Doug Crawford suggests: leave the grot in my car to reduce the clutter and my backache. Bring items in as interests merit. Bring them back to my car when interest abates. Not passing judgement, but the sheer volume of items (and my old man's back) suggests to me this is a plausible strategy. Those of you, who are particularly excited about a thing, can email me personally and let me know: name a price. I suggest some prices for items less common. A working laptop has some utility, if only as a terminal for file transfer. In twenty years, I'll tell whoever listens to me, "I once sold a Thinkpad for a bottle of beer; now it's worth a bottle of water! Curses! Who knew?"
