Minimum requirements for receiving 56K modem connections

Hi folks! I'm messing around with a bunch of modems at home, and would like to know what's required to set up one system to receive 56K calls from another system. I'm able to get 33.6kbps bi-directionally (or 31.2K) with just a phone line between the two modems, and using ATX1D and ATA commands. I think to get 56K I require some equipment to simulate a digital connection, and I'm also not sure if a 56K analog modem can even receive 56K calls. Is this true? Modems I have on hand: - a USRobotics Courier I-Modem - 2 x USRobotics V.Everything, and a USRobotics 56K/X2 Sportster external modem I am also unable to get the I-Modem to connect to any of the analog modems, and although it does have the protocols to support analog, it seems like it's expecting a BRI / ISDN connection to allow that connection. Is this true? If the above are true - what's the minimum / cheapest solution for being able to at least establish a V.90 connection given the equipment I have already? Thanks for your help! John

Hello! I resemble that remark. Teletypes were useful before computers were around to complain about the unit having worse handwriting than the people. The ASR 32 and 33 differ in only a few places many parts are interchangeable. The 33 is the "free terminal" that came with many minicomputers od the 60s like a keyboard and mouse comes with todays' Dell computer. The early homebrew era computers often used asr33 teletypes as the terminal and program storage. That's why a computer hobbyist might want the parts from a free asr32 to use for repairs of a 33. Wow, celebrities in our midst! REXX is fantastic, you did amazing work on that. Your book occupies a prominent spot on my shelves, and we've a copy of it at LSSM as well for use by guests. Speaking of which, you should come out to visit LSSM at some point. We have running S/390 and ES/9000 machines, and some S/370 projects in the works. (not to mention all the DEC machines you've ever heard of, iron from HP, Varian, Cray, Modcomp, Sun, SGI, you name it. Complete, real, non-emulated machines with real peripherals, making the power company happy every day. Japan just got rid of their dependence on floppies. Seems Germany has decided to get with the times. I'm adding a floppy emulator to my Peripheral Technologies PT69-5A and PT68K2s. Getting the files from Linux/DOS/Windows to the disk image has been an interesting challenge. And getting the images from the real floppy to the image files another adventure.
