New Warehouse Cleanup went great! 2023-05-07
by Jeffrey Brace 08 May '23

08 May '23

Today (5/7), 7 of us came to clean out what will be our new warehouse section. I got there about 10AM with Gregg Levine who took the train from manhattan to help us. Ian Litchfield and Thomas Gilinsky came over a few minutes later. Then a few minutes afterwards Ken Gober came. An hour later Bill Inderrieden joined us and Doug came about 1:30PM after driving an hour and a half from his home. We cleared out a section and filled up a quarter of the dumpster. Unfortunately it was already 3/4 full of other groups' trash, so we could only remove part of the trash. The rest will have to wait until the dumpster is emptied and returned. We did sweep a lot, staging most of the remaining trash for removal in the future. We also move items out that we wanted to save for future purposes. Ray Brown helped move some heavy items with the forklift like metal radiators and a huge pallet of shelving parts. Some items need to go to e-recycling or hazardous waste (paint, etc.) at a later time. I will be scheduling a new date for the remaining cleanup when the dumpster is emptied. Thanks to all who helped! OT - Fiber to 9010
by Martin Flynn 02 May '23

02 May '23

CDL is installing single-mode fiber to Building 9010 (The building with the current VCF Museum space) the weekend of June 17th and 18th, replacing the problematic MOCA network gear at Camp Evans. To save time while we have the rented boom lift on site, We plan to route the cable through the vault and up to the pole the prior Saturday (June 10th) Plan is to divide into two teams on the 17th: * The first group will install the steel messenger cable, and begin lacing the fiber to the messenger * The second group will pull the fiber through the 9010 attic to the new rack above the future VCF museum space Link: http://compdecon.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/IMG_1383.jpeg So far, just the usual suspects from CDL are signed up, however extra hands from VCF would be appreciated greatly! Please reply off list to reduce list clutter. Martin Flynn

VCF West 2023 is happening! August 4 & 5 @ CHM
by Jeffrey Brace 02 May '23

02 May '23

Erik Klein, showrunner for VCF West has just declared: *"It has been a long time coming, but we’ve finally made arrangements to have a 2023 VCF West.* *I’ll share some of the boring details later, but, for now, I want to encourage everyone interested in this year’s show to get ready for a great event, but one with a very short runway. So get those exhibits prepared and registered, get those talks planned and free up your time for FRIDAY AUGUST 4th and SATURDAY August 5th.Yes, you read that right. One of the big hang-ups with getting 2023 off of the ground was that our traditional, and preferred, venue, the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, is not available for Sunday on our normal show weekend. So this year’s event will be Friday and Saturday with setup on Thursday. While this scheduling issue was the main holdup to getting the show off of the ground - It took a while to come to terms with the CHM for the rental, dates, etc. - the good news is that the CHM are very excited to have us back and they will help us promote the show, hopefully increasing our attendance even with the awkward days. That said I do apologize profusely for the delays and inconvenience this will cause. I also apologize for “ignoring” most of the emails from folks asking about our progress. I really wasn’t sure until just today that the show would even go on and I didn’t want to spur a rumor mill in advance of an announcement.Thankfully the announcement is a positive one!Exhibitor registration is now open. Because of the short timelines I’m encouraging everyone to sign up ASAP.The same goes for speakers. If you’d like to speak at the show please let me know soon.Thank you all for the encouragement and support. This show can’t happen without you all. Once again I apologize for compressing all of the planning. This won’t happen again."* Facebook post: https://www.facebook.com/100064572070138/posts/pfbid02Yxz3xMtN7FCymg5f9CCQn… Website: https://vcfed.org/events/vintage-computer-festival-west/ Please spread the word!

Warehouse Cleanup Sunday, May 7 starting at 10AM
by Jeffrey Brace 30 Apr '23

30 Apr '23

Hello everyone, Just making sure that everyone knows that the correct date for warehouse cleanup is Sunday, May 7 starting at 10AM. Contact me off list if you are interested. Bring gloves if you have them as the items are dirty. Wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty as it is a dusty space. Wear masks if you are sensitive to dust. There is nothing of interest in the warehouse at this point. Unless you want a 32 inch CRT TV or two, broken Christmas lights, scraps of clothing, a big old painting, and other general debris. Pieces of wood, plastic, etc. It's not construction debris. It was used for CEBOT.. There were a few rounds of cleanup already to remove items. It was a general storage for CEBOT (Camp Evans Base of Terror) and other museums. Halt and Catch Fire Syllabus

Someone posted this and I started to read it and I'm not a fan I think there are a lot of things missing, I figured I would share as it may be of interest to others. https://bits.ashleyblewer.com/halt-and-catch-fire-syllabus/ This site features a curriculum developed around the television series, Halt and Catch Fire (2014-2017), a fictional narrative about people working in tech during the 1980s-1990s. The intent is for this website to be used by self-forming small groups that want to create a “watching club” (like a book club) and discuss aspects of technology history that are featured in this series.

My magical moments
by Jeffrey Jonas 23 Apr '23

23 Apr '23

I met up with folks I know from so many other groups/associations/groups - David from Unigroup (NYC's oldest Unix/Linux user group) http://unigroup.org/ - Murph from NJ Linux https://www.meetup.com/NJLinux/ - Chris Liendo, Brian Cirulnick, Saul Trabal from the NY anime club https://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Cartoon/Fantasy_Organization - many members of the anthropomorphic community I'm VCF's unofficial tummler ( https://www.wordnik.com/words/tummler ), schmoozing with everybody ( https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us/dictionary/english/schmooze ). I did my best to be a catalyst to great conversations among folks and direct them to things they'd enjoy. I had lotsa one-on-one quality time with everyone, particularly those I helped load their cars. Everyone saw me delivering heavy items all around. It's hard to be serious when using a genuine Radio Flyer little red wagon https://www.radioflyer.com/shop/all-terrain-wagons.html Believing that few things are truly "off topic", I had toys for kids in the free pile (and saw very happy kids playing with them), and sold a lot of the Playable Metal toys (Tinkertoy for big kids). This is my 10th year of printing the exhibitor/vendor signs (since 2014). I hope they made all the exhibitors & vendors feel welcome and appreciated. -- jeff jonas

Fw: re-animating IBM front panels

I have transportation issues, and a bad back. I am currently using, for each front panel, an esp8266 driving individual ws2811 LEDs, NOT the light strings; with a refresh rate of over 100 cycles per second. The plan is to drive the IBM 370 / 145 front panel using a Raspberry with Hercules VM/370 emulation. I also have a 3270 display console, that is internally trash, looking to replace the guts with an old VGA monitor connected to another Raspberry PI running 3270 emulation. These front panels weigh a ton, and are made of big IBM iron. I will have a difficult time hauling them to the New Jersey shore from Northern Virginia. If they ran the real incandescent lamps, find out how! 2) Carl Claunch has a FPGA clone of the IBM 1130, complete with LED retrofit for the front panel. I believe he even has firmware for the LEDs to faithfully emulate incandescent lamps/bulbs. I'm of the opinion that using the proper color LEDs is cheaper and probably faster / more responsive than retrofitting with "Neopixel" controller-color-LEDs. Re: [vcf-midatlantic] What was your single heaviest vintage computer haul?
by Daniel FitzGerald 23 Apr '23

A hoarder who had started multiple successful dot-com era startups was moving to Florida and asked my friend and I to take his hoard of computers. This included systems from his days doing Macintosh repair in the 80s, where customers gave him old systems they no longer had any use for. We filled my SUV, my friend's Subaru Impreza wagon, and I think my friend had to do two or three trips. Some of the highlights: 9 compact Macs, a Tandy CoCo Model 1 with documents and X-10 control unit, a terminal for an HP minicomputer, a VT-420, two PowerBook G3s, boxes of Mac floppy disks, most of Inset Systems corporate diskette library, an obscene number of tape drives, a Corvus Omninet with "Property of Penn-Central" tags on it, flatbed scanners, three Gateway 2000 servers, an enterprise-grade Compaq server with storage, a Commodore 64, a Commodore 128, an Amiga 500, an Amiga 1000, and a "Commodore Development Program" Amiga 2000 with cross compilation hardware for Mac and Windows. - Dan FitzGerald

IMO, go ahead and punish the restaurant. It's a dive bar. When I used to hang out around that area, it was generally a place avoided by myself and any other LGBT people I knew, and this was prior to 2016. If we wanted a bar, we went to Asbury Park somewhere near Cookman Ave. Dan, you said your server was attentive. Does that mean that they were cool and wanted to help out their patrons, or that they wanted your group out of the place as soon as possible? Overall, the Monmouth shore towns tend to be very friendly and accommodating towards LGBT people (especially Asbury and Ocean Grove.) I have no doubt that a report to Neptune PD would be taken seriously. It would likely be added to a list of other incidents reports of things occuring at that bar. What was your single heaviest vintage computer haul?
by Ethan O'Toole 22 Apr '23

22 Apr '23

Okay VCFers, what was your one largest single vintage computer haul? Mine is easily ~2001 time frame. Four Cray J932SE systems in one 18' dock height truck. It almost flipped on it's side. Probably 12000+ pounds of 'puter. That was the mountaintop of vintage system collecting for me then. https://users.757.org/~ethan/pics/office/cray/Image53.jpg https://users.757.org/~ethan/pics/office/cray/Image58.jpg ipad is probably faster and battery powered. Your turn!

Almost hate crimed at Kelly's after VCF East
by danjfitzgerald 22 Apr '23

22 Apr '23

Forward: I am sending this out not as an accusation, but as a cautionary tale. VCF East was amazing and the wonderful folks at VCF East and VCF Mid-Atlantic had nothing to do with this. That being said, this almost happened to my co-exhibitors and myself after we left the event and I dont know what I can do about it other than warn everybody else.On Sunday, my 2.5 co-exhibitors and myself were some of the last to leave InfoAge, and went out for a celebratory dinner. We've all been a little "homeless" since the traditional VCF Mid-Atlantic haunt closed this winter, and I find The Brickhouse too TV intensive for dinner, and try to stick to locally owned places if I can. I suggested Kelly's in Neptune as that was one of the places that VCF Mid-Atlantic tried out when looking for a new go-to dinner place last year.I didnt notice much of anything at the time, and the full details didnt come to light until two of my co-exhibitors exchanged stories after we had safely returned home to Connecticut. But when they did, a disturbing picture emerged. On the way in, we passed a larger white gentleman wearing a black hoodie with white American flag and other symbols on it. I didnt register this, but he seemed to clock that at least one member of my group was Transgender. We were entering in single-file; when he encountered the last person in our line he made an attempt to body slam her against the wall. She dodged him and said "Hi, how are you doing?" as she walked past him. Since we were walking in single file, she was the only one that saw this, and she didn't say anything to the rest of our group.During the meal, at least one couple at the bar glared at us while we ate, while the manager made a harried attempt to check in on us. Everything was uneventful otherwise, excepting the chef having no idea that corned beef and cabbage is supposed to be serverd brisket style. At least they knew how to clean their taps. Our unofficial third co-presenter is an infosec specialist and has trained themself to take operational security very seriously; whenever they enter a room or a parking lot or whatever, they scan for possible threats. They were also our driver that night. They left the restaraunt first and noticed two large men with black hoodies standing behind a pickup truck, talking and smoking cigarettes. When the more obviously transgender members of our party came out, they noticed the two men nod at each other, throw away their cigarettes and get into their truck. We made it into our car and they pretended to mess with the GPS while noting that the truck just sat idling. When we started to back out, they noticed the truck turn its brake lights on. We pulled out and the truck followed us. We drove to 35 and Belmar Avenue and then blew through the yield, allowing for a car coming out of the QuickCheck to get between us and the truck. Then we were able to lose the tail.Because the person in my party who almost got body checked and the person driving our car chose not to talk about it, we didnt realize until dinner back in Connecticut that this had happened. Also, the description that one person gave of "body check man" matched the description the other person gave of one of the pickup truck men.The purpose of this story is to document what happened to us on Sunday night following VCF East, and to also let the VCF Mid-Atlantic community know of the kind of people who patron Kelly's in Neptune.Yours always,Dan FitzGeraldSent via the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, an AT&T 5G Evolution capable smartphone

Jeffrey Brace jeffrey at vcfed.org Writes:Wed Sep 2 13:48:24 EDT 2020 Sounds like an Outer Limits episode where the world was taken apart and remade every moment and sometimes they made mistakes which is why when you lose your keys you find time in a place that you already searched. I thought this was a Spielberg "Amazing Stories" episode, obviously not. The episode is: "A Matter of Minutes" is the third segment of the fifteenth episode from the first season (1985–86) of the television series The Twilight Zone. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Matter_of_Minutes I remember that scene where the couple is in the "Void of White Space" and the "Supervisor of the Maintenance of Time" says: (paraphrasing) "Ya know how you go back to look for something you know is supposed to be there multiple times and then it finally is where you thoughtit should be? AS400e on a trailer

Check this out: https://www.vintagecomputer.net/ibm/as400e/AS400e_620_on-trailer.png It's always fun to rescue a huge thing and as you're driving the trailer home you ask yourself, "what have I done?" Here it is inside, getting in was a Herculean task: https://www.vintagecomputer.net/ibm/as400e/AS400e_620.png Next - it takes 25 hard drives, I am going to scale that back, and the power to hopefully limit to less than 15 amps. I have a terminal, tape unit and the software. Bill

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] OT: Almost hate crimed at Kelly's after VCF East
by Christian Liendo 20 Apr '23

I think we can all show support and still respect the victim's choice on going to the police or not. We are not the victims, we don't know how they are feeling. We can be pragmatic and supportive. We should support them in their decision and keep being supportive in our group. If the victims decide to change their mind we should support that as well. I'm not looking to fight with anyone, just asking us to be understanding of their decision.

All, I'm working on a reproduction Altair 8800B dress panel with another hobbyist and need to get Pantone color matching done on the dress panel. Does anyone have a Pantone set who can bring it to VCF East? No one local to me seems to have one. Thanks, Jonathan
