Has anyone had experience shipping small parcels from Sweden to the US? Recommended shippers? This would need to be picked up at a residential address. Value at $100 USD. LaCie Electron22 Blue IV monitor available
by Jeff Galinat 11 Apr '22

11 Apr '22

Hi everyone, Since I am packing the van for my trip east for VCF East, I wanted to gauge interest in this monitor before I pack it since it is large & not too light. For those not familiar with this monitor, the link below from LaCie details the pertinent information. <https://www.lacie.com/lacie-content/datasheet/blueIV_en.pdf> This monitor is in very nice shape, just a little dusty. It will be cleaned before I transport it. It can sync with Macs or PCs. The it can handle horizontal frequencies from 30khz to 140khz. I was thinking of $200 for the monitor but I will entertain offers. Please let me know if any of you folks on the list are interested. I am leaving from AZ In 2 days (Wed AM) Regards, Jeff Galinat

FS at VCF East
by Kelly Leavitt 07 Apr '22

07 Apr '22

I'll be bringing a complete ASR 33 with tape reader, pedestal, manual and several rolls of tape and paper. I'll consider any serious offer. I have not had it on in several years. Pictures available on request. I'll also have a Tandy 2000, several monitors, a Dorio terminal, and a couple of 286 era machines. Unless I change my mind, all of these will be in the consignment area (where I will be once again). Kelly

FS/FT At VCF East 2022
by Jonathan Chapman 06 Apr '22

06 Apr '22

All, I have a few things that I'd like to sell or trade at VCF East, I'll start the list with these three: Osborne 1 --------- Repaired, works, comes with diskettes written out from images. Pretty sure we did a complete recap on this one. Drives cleaned and alignment checked. It has a double-density add on board that we couldn't get working, which is included but currently removed. I believe it has the 80 column mod board. Includes one of those modems that goes in the diskette storage slot. Case is somewhat yellowed. Sun SPARCserver 4/330 --------------------- Cleaned, working, power supply de-RIFA'ed (quite a job to get it out and apart!). NOS 2.1GB 3.5" SCSI disk installed, clean install of SunOS 4.1.4. 32MB RAM on the motherboard. I have a third-party RAM expansion board but it's got a bad bit on it somewhere and I can't find a manual. NVRAM rebuilt using one of our repair boards. 150 MB QIC tape drive disassembled, cleaned, lubricated, and working, though it's a bit loud compared to some of my others. I have an ALM-2 I could probably be convinced to include. Upgraded Macintosh 512K ----------------------- Your usual Mac 512K except it's got one of those Mac Rescue SCSI/4MB RAM upgrade boards that grabs the 68K! Also Plus ROMs so it can boot SCSI. Runs SSW 6.0.8 just fine. Floppy drive cleaned, I don't think this one needed a new gear. Comes with another external floppy and original carry case. I have an Apple HDSC 40 box that can go with it, some animal pried it apart and pried the HDA out of the drive's frame inside, so basically it's wrecked and would just be a nice box to put a SCSI2SD in. Keyboard and mouse included. All the bits are original to the unit, looks like someone used it in the 80s for writing college papers. Please reply off-list with interest/offers. I won't bring these systems unless I've got a definite buyer as I'm picking up a bunch of stuff from Ian and won't have space in the car. Thanks, Jonathan

One day wrist bands versus multiple day wrist bands
by Gregg Levine 05 Apr '22

05 Apr '22

Hello! I see that the droid who writes the tickets says that we are doing one day ones versus the idea of multiple days at once ones. And it says here:(Quoting from the ticket droid.) "We are doing one day tickets only this year because: 1) Wristbands are easier to manage and less confusing with a different color per day rather than per type of ticket (i.e. 1 day, 2 day, 3 day). 2 Day tickets in particular could be 3 combinations (i.e. Fri & Sat, Sat & Sun, Fri & Sun). 2) Attendance Count It's easier to count the daily attendance. We need to know that for fire marshal rules as well as for our general knowledge and tracking accurate attendance numbers. So one day tickets make it much easier to track. 3) Cost The cost of running the show has increased. We need more money to pay for our expenses." Normally I'm the one who turns up one day, that is the Saturday. But also for various ones I would also show up the next day, to see what I might have missed. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again."

Tony Scara passed on April 1
by Christian Liendo 04 Apr '22

04 Apr '22

If you are from NJ and have been to Ham events you may know of Tony Scara. He was a computer tech who lived in Piscataway NJ. He was a collector and fan of vintage technology. He worked for Electronic Associates, Inc. (EAI), he also worked for another computer company that I forget right now before joining Rutgers University working on computers there. He had a whole house of machines that slowly dwindled away as people bought them. I couldn't believe his collection. I purchased a number of items from him ( one of the northstar horizon in VCF's collection came from him as well as an EAI computer), during that time we got to talking and started a friendship. I brought him to VCF which he enjoyed but he couldn't walk too much because he was in his 80s. We stopped and instead I would share photos and we would talk about machines back then. I didn't get to see him much in the last few years because of COVID and because he was in his 90s now and so we would talk on the phone. He didn't get to hang out with us, but he was one of us. He really enjoyed talking about old technology. I know other people have bought from him, I know other people have met him. I hope you have as fond memories as I do

Apple II Classroom at VCF East - April 22, 23, 24
by Adam Michlin 03 Apr '22

03 Apr '22

Hi Everyone, For years, I've dreamed of recreating an Apple II classroom at VCF East. This was all planned to happen in April of 2020, but, of course, the best laid plans... With partners in crime Tony Bogan, Dean Notarnicola, Stephen A. Edwards and Javier A. Rivera we're going to try again for April of 2022 at VCF East - April 22, 23, 24 - at InfoAge Science & History Museums in Wall, NJ. Classes will include Retrobriting, Joystick Repair (bring your broken Apple II joysticks!), Intro to 6502 Assembly, Intro to Apple BASIC, Advanced 6502 Assembly and many more! Most excitingly, various classes will run all three days, carefully spaced to avoid the larger events, so consider planning on attending for all three days, if you can! Or just stop by during lunch time and play some Apple II games. Full schedule: https://vcfed.org/events/vintage-computer-festival-east/vcf-east-apple-8bit… And to answer the most likely questions, classes will be first come first serve and be held in the CDL Classroom. Please forward this email far and wide! OT: help needed with network problem
by William Dudley 28 Mar '22

28 Mar '22

This has naught to do with vintage computers, but I need help, and this audience likely has one or more folks who can help. I run my own mail server; I have for many years. Lately, spamhaus.org has blocked me for ONE suspect email from my network. Here is ALL the bad activity from my IP for the last three months: (IP address, timestamp (UTC), and HELO string) 98.109.205.15 2022-03-28 10:15:00 instructure.com 98.109.205.15 2022-03-15 08:05:00 instructure.com 98.109.205.15 2022-01-21 16:10:00 localhost It's a funny kind of malware that sends two messages 15 days apart. I can't figure out where it's coming from, and my knowledge of iptables and tcpdump is insufficient to do the following jobs: 1. figure out where this bad email is coming from 2. block port 25 outbound at my firewall except from the ONE machine authorized to send email. I am willing to PAY for help with this. Email me if you think you can help and would like to try. Thanks, Bill Dudley This email is free of malware because I run Linux.

Shugart SA800-2 drives
by Mike Loewen 28 Mar '22

28 Mar '22

I have a pair of Shugart SA800-2 8" drives, which are mounted in a Micromation enclosure. Both drives have the factory jumper configuration, except for the B: drive which has the termination jumpers (T3, T4, T5 and T6) removed and DS2 installed. I've connected them to my media system via an older FDADAP board. Using the IMD program, I try and read a single-sided disk that has valid data. The drive selects and the head-load solenoid activates. After several seconds, IMD displays a "No interrupt from FDC" error. The same thing happens with both drives. The Alignment function doesn't recognize anything from the disk. I've successfully used this system with Tandon TM848-2 drives, and a Siemens 120-8. Before I start chasing signals, are there any obvious pitfalls to using a SA800-2 with a (relatively) modern PC? Should the DC (Disk Change) jumper be installed? By default, it is not. I noticed that on the Tandon drive, DC is installed. I have the operating and maintenance manuals for the SA800/801 drives. Museum items in need of repair
by Jeffrey Brace 26 Mar '22

26 Mar '22

Apple 2: Best as I can describe: "scrambled video". This has been a chronic problem with this machine. It seems like it is a loose video card and wires that need to be reseated, wiggled, etc. Tony knows how to make it work, but he can't always be there and the fix doesn't last very long. The other docents and I have tried to replicate what he does to no avail. IBM PCjr: Has a floppy drive making loud noises and doesn't boot up properly. We have an SD card solution for it, but that doesn't seem to work all the time either. Dean knows how to make it work, but again it doesn't work for me or the other docents. Vic-20: Needs great demo programs downloaded to SD card and instructions made for docents which ones they are and how to operate them. Adam Joystick: It doesn't go up! Don't know if it can be repaired, or if it needs to be replaced. ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

Sell/Trade/Give Away at 3/26-3/27 Repair Workshop
by Dan FitzGerald 24 Mar '22

24 Mar '22

So I dumpster dive and I have amassed a small pile of things that I don't want but suspect that other people will. I'm hoping to take all of the following items to this weekend's repair workshop in the hopes of removing them from my basement and finding them a good home! - Sony 13" Trinitron television, dated 12/1993. Working and in good condition, remote control missing - $25 - IBM ThinkPad 700C PS/2 (one of the ThinkPad launch models). Not working, has some display issues and gives an error code about the hard disk. $20 OBO (because thats what I paid for it at the flea market) - IBM USB Portable 1.44" Diskette Drives. I have about four of these, most with a fabric case and at least one still wrapped in plastic - $5 each - RCA 13" XL-100 color UHF/VHF television, dated 7/1981. Does not work, I suspect (hope?) this is an easy fix for somebody who knows what they are doing - Free - Textbook on circuit theory: "The Dynamics of Digital Excitation", Masakazu Shoji (1998) - Free If any of these tickle your fancy (and you're going to be around this weekend), let me know in advance and I will set them aside for you. I'm also willing to trade them or offer them as credit towards the price of the following items - IBM PC or PC/XT keyboard - IBM PCjr Keyboard - Apple ADB keyboard for a IIGS - (Why the heck is it always the keyboards that are missing??) - An IDE hard disk controller card that will work with my stock PC/AT model 099 - An AT-class ethernet card that I can easily get working without bungling for a packet driver shim and a prayer (eg: Novell NE1000, NE2000 and clones). I'll have the AT there with me this weekend if you need to prove to me that it can work without me tearing my hair out) -- Regards, Dan FitzGerald They/Them/Theirs http://www.vm.ibm.com/devpages/dfitzger

For all those attending the repair workshop this weekend. Please park inside the gate as you usually do when you arrive. Anyone arriving after 12PM, please be aware that there will be an attendant at the gate for the NJ Maker's Day event which is at InfoAge's campus from 12PM to 5PM. Tell them that you are with the VCF Repair Workshop and they will let you in. Regular visitors for that event will be going through the regular InfoAge front entrance. Any questions? Let me know! * I can of course provide maps such as [...] InfoAge created maps that are on the website This is an InfoAge problem, and that's a hard "nope" on providing InfoAge maps that correspond to your descriptions. I suppose they may be buried in their website somewhere, but hell if I can find them. Without a map, your detailed descriptions, which I really do appreciate, are of little use. Googling "infoage map", here is the first link: https://infoage.org/campus-map-feb-21-2019/ This leads to https://infoage.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/campus-map-feb-21-2019.pdf, which has letter designations only. If you go to their home page and click "visit", you'll find a link to this "campus map" with locations designated 1 through 18: https://infoage.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/TourMap_16x20_self-download.… If you do a google image search on "info age map" you have to scroll down a page or two to find a vcf map that contains 9010-D, 9000 and 9032-A. The bottom line is that I spent 15 minutes unsuccessfully trying to find a map that corresponds to your descriptions. That's about 14 minutes and 45 seconds longer than a casual visitor would spend. So either InfoAge's maps need to change to use our designations or our designations need to change to follow InfoAge's maps. Since the buildings themselves have the 4-digit numbers on them, I think InfoAge should use those on their maps. That way a visitor walking around could tell where they are. Dave

A clearer way to describe InfoAge buildings
by Jeffrey Brace 22 Mar '22

Whenever I talk about a building at InfoAge I use the original building designations to make it objective in the description. Otherwise I would have to come up with several subjective descriptions that are different and lengthy and vary based on the person. I've been wondering what I could do to help people understand which building I'm talking about without getting into a lengthy description. The original building numbers are painted on each of the buildings (i.e. 9032). There are different sections of each building (i.e. A, B, C, D). The subjective description for 9032-A is "where we have the vcf east exhibits", "where we used to have our repair workshops", "the big open room", "the big room down the ramp from the ballroom", "Where the World of IBM was last year". I can of course provide maps such as through Google Maps, InfoAge created maps that are on the website, or maps that VCF members have created. I've even thought about taking photographs and video walkthroughs to make it clearer. Here are some common buildings that I refer to. It starts out with the official objective designation followed by a subjective one: 9001 - "The Hotel", "The Marconi Hotel", "The Red Brick Building", "The one with the front desk and lobby", "The main building", "The one by the front gates". It Includes a few museums, the lobby, front desk, administrative offices, dining room. 9032 - Includes for sections labeled A, B, C, D. Section A is where we have exhibits, repair workshops, etc, Section B is the shipwreck museum Section C are many museums that go to the hallway heading toward the radio museum Section D is the radio museum. Broadway - Long hallway which is the backbone of the "H" building which includes four long buildings 9010, 9011, 9036, 9037. Each of these has 4 sections with a letter: A, B, C, D. 9010 - Includes four sections labeled A, B, C, D. Section A - VCF museum, Model train museum, Wireless telegraph museum Section B - Unfinished space, future VCF Museum (4.0) Section C - "Where we had consignment at VCF East", Cafeteria, future Radar and Electronic warfare museum. Section D - "Where we have the main talks at VCF East", Bunkrooms and bathrooms 9011 - Sections A, B, C, D, Military Vehicles Museum and storage. 9036 - Section A - VCF Warehouse Section B - Empty Section C - Future VCF warehouse. Section D - Storage 9037 - Section A - Storage Section B - Storage Section C - Storage Section D - Storage 9059 - "CDL", "IXR", "Where we have our repair workshops". Building with a room that is called "The Classroom" and is used by many groups and another room which is the workbench area and CDL's space. There are many other buildings with numbers, but these are the most common ones that I refer to. So how could I make it clearer to each of you so that you know what I'm talking about when I say 9032-A for example? ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org

PDP-11 topics again.
by Dave Shevett 21 Mar '22

I would be keen on coming down for the repair fest with my 11/73 if someone has a spare KDJ11 CPU board that I can swap into this chassis to see if this is the ONLY fault I'm seeing. I've found other boards on ebay but the lowest price is $400, and that's a lot of money to toss out when I'm not sure the rest of hte machine is functional. Anyone got a board I can test with? I don't... know if a low end CPU will work here (IE an 11/03 or an 11/05). I'm willing to strip the backplane and try it with the serial boards. -- Dave Shevett shevett(a)pobox.com

In the VCF museum (building 9010A) there is an access point I can see on the controller, however cannot connect to it. Model: UAP-AC-Pro MAC: fc:ec:da:a3:75:1e Version: 4.0.21 If it's not supporting VCF infrastructure, can we coordinate a reset so I can upgrade it and adopt it on the controller? Martin Flynn

InfoAge Lecture Series - VCF's turn - July, August, September, 2022
by Jeffrey Brace 20 Mar '22

20 Mar '22

So InfoAge has different organizations inviting speakers to come give a talk. Everyone pays the regular admission fee for seeing the museums. The goal is to get more people to come to the museums and to get noticed more widely. Events are listed here: https://infoage.org/events/ Each organization has a quarter of the year (3 months) to invite speakers to come. VCF is tasked with coming up with speakers for July, August and September, 2022. I have ideas for many speakers which include those who couldn't make it to VCF East, but wanted to get ideas from you on this list. If anyone has any suggestions for speakers, please let me know. It is preferable that they are in the mid-atlantic region because the budget for paying for speaker travel expenses is limited. ========================================= Jeff Brace VCF National Board Member Chairman & Vice President Vintage Computer Festival East Showrunner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey(a)vcfed.org
