by Jeffrey Brace 14 Nov '25

14 Nov '25

I'm curious to know if anyone has recommendations on software that would help me manage VCF East. Also suggestions on easy to use database system that I could create my own customized system. Thanks! Re: [vcf-midatlantic] November Workshop/Hack-a-Thon at InfoAge
by Eric Fox 14 Nov '25

Good evening, I plan to make some adjustments to my Commodore 1702 monitor while it is actively on in an effort to calibrate the image geometry/stretch/XY. I have a set of metal screwdrivers with plastic handles on hand, however I question the safety of using these when making adjustments while the monitor is plugged in. Would anyone happen to have any ceramic/plastic screwdrivers (flat head/Philips) with precision tips to adjust the pots inside they could bring along for the workshop this Saturday? Support in this project would be greatly appreciated if some tools could be offered then by any participants. If no one seems to have any, I could either wing it with what I have or overnight order something online for Saturday. Thanks! Alaire is pretty cool, although it runs on a shoe-string budget. The $5 admission fee is worth it just for the apple cider doughnuts at the bakery. There's a large visitors' center that explains what happened there and several buildings. Sadly, the iron furnace, which was the main purpose of the entire site, is just the chimney now. Outside the village is a nice little historic railroad. Dave -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. www.avast.com

November Workshop/Hack-a-Thon at InfoAge
by Jeff Salzman 11 Nov '25

11 Nov '25

This month's MARCH Workshop will be held in a different room on-site at InfoAge. The room is in building 9010D. *This is a temporary change of location. The location for the November 2025 Workshop supercedes the location listed on the MARCH Workshop web page at Repair Workshops @ InfoAge – Vintage Computer Federation <https://vcfed.org/repair-workshops-at-infoage/>* For those who have been to VCF-East before, the 9010D room is the same where talks and conferences were generally held. When driving into campus through the main gate and heading toward the T-intersection of the road, a small set of cement stairs is located right in front of you, leading to the main entrance of 9010D. Make a right at the T-intersection and park anywhere along the road edge in that area. Just do not park on the grass. We still need to know who plans to come to the Workshop, so please add your name to the list on the spreadsheet linked here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wZfxlcyORhpSiPJso0Qc-MMWypN_m6muR7O… As for the Hack-a-Thon that's scheduled for Saturday at the Workshop, please use the same form linked above to sign up. A separate Hack-a-Thon sheet was added for that purpose. Please select it from the tabs at the bottom. The Hack-a-Thon will be postponed until another Workshop event in 2026 if there aren't at least two people (or teams) that sign up for it by this Saturday. Complete details about the Hack-a-Thon are here: https://vcfed.org/2025/09/15/march-hack-a-thon-free-pile-fabrication/ Looking forward to seeing everybody there this weekend! I haven't seen anything for A&B power. Just a note, I worked in multiple data centers and I work in the reserves as a IT and we don't have color codes there either and that's the government where they have a document for everything. I know we have A&B PDUs labeled and we keep the first numbered power supply to A and the second to B, but that's not a written industry standard. More like it's easier to remember thT way. Festivus is coming! Dec. 13 at 10AM
by Jeffrey Brace 08 Nov '25

08 Nov '25

What is Festivus? It is a VCF party that happens on a Saturday in December for VCF members. We have had this party for the past 20 years. Food, drinks, socializing, playing video games, mini-swap meet. Date is Saturday, December 13, 2025 Start time is 10AM, end time 12PM. Everyone needs to leave the campus at the end. All, I’m helping a family clean out a hoarder house, and came across some significant equipment, that others might be interested in. For example, an IBM PC Server 500 System/390, a mainframe board set in a desk side chassis. If anyone is interested, please reach out to me directly. If you happen to be near Huntsville and came come by today, low prices are to be had. https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/i6q7g9pvgfhn50fgc1l0z/IMG_1436.HEIC?rlkey=s5… https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/4snzo0w69bcb9rz5imf5k/IMG_1437.HEIC?rlkey=yu… https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/2ydcmqs28kngjwfmt1hqw/IMG_1439.HEIC?rlkey=35… Thanks! - Alex

I concur with David about Tech Soup being a great resource for some (not all, obviously) business software at deeply discounted pricing for 501(c)(3) charitable organizations such as MARCH/VCF. To qualify you must provide them with a copy of your organization's IRS Letter of Determination of 501(c)(approval), Federal Tax ID# (EIN), and other info. https://www.techsoup.org/joining-techsoup/registration -bernieS

When a server or switch has two power supplies, is there a color coding standard for line cords and equipment denoting the "A" power PDU and the "B" power PDU? Normally would use use red and blue power cables, however looking for an EIA or TIA document confirming this. Cheers! Martin

Event management software
by David Waybright 06 Nov '25

I know someone was looking for event management software. Has the "Powers to be" of the VCF signed up for TechSoup. They are a non-profit software and hardware discount and donation system. I was just on their for the therapeutic horse riding program non-profit in port deposit, MD my wife rides with. We're looking at network hardware that tech soup donates to non-profits. I noticed there is event management listed too. If VCF and any of it's smaller branhches like VCF east or VCF mid atlantic are 501c3 non-profits then I think you qualify for TechSoup! MARCH Workshop, InfoAge Campus, November 15-16, 2025
by Jeff Salzman 06 Nov '25

06 Nov '25

Just a reminder about the upcoming MARCH Repair Workshop on November 15-16, 2025. The Workshop will take place exclusively in the 9032A room attached to the back side of the InfoAge "Hotel" building. CDL will not be opened for Workshop activity. For those who attended VCF-East, 9032A is where the lower exhibit hall was located. A large room at ground level with plenty of windows and a cement floor. The entrance to 9032A is via a door near where the airplane is located on the InfoAge campus. See the MAP on the Workshop information page, here: Repair Workshops @ InfoAge – Vintage Computer Federation <https://vcfed.org/repair-workshops-at-infoage/> Please add your name to the spreadsheet below so we can have an idea of the number of tables to reserve for attendees: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wZfxlcyORhpSiPJso0Qc-MMWypN_m6muR7O… Also note, this month's Workshop will also (finally) host the first-ever MARCH Hack-a-Thon. This event is a contest that challenges your ability to create something using vintage computer systems and parts. There will be a prize. More details here: MARCH Hack-a-Thon: Free Pile Fabrication – Vintage Computer Federation <https://vcfed.org/2025/09/15/march-hack-a-thon-free-pile-fabrication/> Any questions, please reply to this email. They kind of grew up together: https://github.com/magfest/ubersystem It's free as in beer. It handles a lot. From staff schedules, to dietary restrictions for staff meals to schedule of events, ticketing probably. Badge check in and on and on. It might take a learning curve? Mr. Tuma's Espresso Maker
by Wesley Fegan 29 Oct '25

Hi folks, I'm sorry to blast the whole list like this, but I am not very familiar with how I would reach individual users that I haven't emailed before. My friend Michael Tuma bought an espresso maker from the "RedHat guy". Apparently this mystery character has some kind of cream pitcher that goes with the machine? Michael is trying to reach out so that he can arrange the retrieval of this accessory. I could be mistaken, but I don't think it was Alex who sold the coffee maker. There was another gentleman who was wearing a RedHat baseball cap at the swap meet. If anyone has any leads, let me know! Thanks, Wes

It really is a shame I have very good luck in bending pins on older processors As long as they’re not bent 90° or more it shouldn’t be that difficult, but yet time consuming. I found a bunch of USB 1.1 hubs. Is there any reason, no matter how obscure, to keep them? Perhaps some old equipment that cannot handshake on newer ones? The reason I ask: even 10-base-t hubs are still useful for older equipment. I just gave one to August that he calls "the rosetta stone" because it's 12: 10-base-T RJ45, one BNC, one AUI all together in one box. -- Jeff Jonas

by Neil Cherry 22 Oct '25

The Sanyo monitor is a 9" CRT. I'm happy that I can get another tube as the one I have is badly burned in and has a few other issues. I don't expect that this can't be repaired. :-) On other notes, I managed to get a nice unwanted URDA SDK-85 that seemed to be passed around before I got it. I'll slowly restore that as I need to make an adapter for my EPROM burner to burn the 8755s I also cleaned up the TI99/A keyboard and I'll add that to my TS1000. I have the 16K module so it's time to play. ;-) That was a great swap meet. :-) -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry(a)linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies KD2ZRQ

Swap Meet Success! - Oct. 2025
by Jeffrey Brace 20 Oct '25

20 Oct '25

I want to first of all thank all the volunteers whose hard work helped to make this swap meet a success. I want to thank certain individuals who went above and beyond to support me. Joe Giliberti - Starting two months before the swap meet he selected, tested and priced all the VCF surplus items, selected items for the free pile, helped load the trucks at night and unload the trucks in the early morning hours and in so many other ways over the past few weeks. Emilio - Helped to organize and put shrink wrap on the racks, spent hours at the ticket table and the front desk and in many other ways. Tom Gesell - Helped two days before the event reorganize the free pile racks so that they would be easy to wrap, helped at the ticket desk, front desk, loading and unloading during breakdown. Ken Gober - Spent hours watching the back entrance to direct people to the front entrance. Helped with loading and loading the UHaul truck. Doug Crawford - helped watch the VCF surplus racks and free pile racks. Rich Bauman and Andy Bodnar - Directed parking. They did an excellent job! Rick Lewis - Managed the front desk, put out the yard signs, picked them up, picked me up at the Uhaul rental place both times. Steve Lagotte and many others names I didn't know and helped support me and the other volunteers with the breakdown and unloading. Thank you buyers! We had a record number of buyers this year. There was a 74% increase in buyers from the previous swap meet. We had held steady for 5 years with the same number, but this year we had a growth spurt with lots of new people. Thank you vendors! We had a record number of vendors this year with a 76% increase than previous years. The great weather helped a lot, but word seems to be spreading about how great our swap meet is. Everyone who I talked to was very happy with their success in buying and selling. I hope that everyone liked the Fire Museum food truck. I personally thought their food was great! Take care! Does anyone know the lineage of the LCM's IBM 4361 mainframe?
by Dan FitzGerald 20 Oct '25

20 Oct '25

I'm working on a write-up on the history of the IBM 4361 for the ICM, and while I have a fair bit of information from IBM itself on the 4361 in general, I'd like to know about their 4361 in particular. I recall a Moshix YouTube video where some background of the machine was discussed: that it was used at a business in California which had kept a spare 4361 for parts. But does anybody here know any of the specific details? What was the name of the business, when did LCM+L acquire it, what was it originally used for, that sort of thing. This will all go into the final paragraph of the write-up. Draft write up attached. -- Regards, Dan FitzGerald Classical Computing Laboratory at IBM Poughkeepse http://www.vm.ibm.com/devpages/DFITZGER VM/SP Systems Programming Team, Interim Computer Museum HNET: SDFVM(DFITZGER)

VOLUNTEERS IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Friday Volunteers Oct. 17
by Jeffrey Brace 17 Oct '25

17 Oct '25

Hello volunteers, DO NOT GO IN THE FRONT GATE FRIDAY OCTOBER 17 FROM 5PM TO 12PM!!!! There is a private event going on in 9001 and 9032 so no one is allowed in those buildings. Anyone that is coming to help on Friday, Oct. 17 will need to come in the side gate which is on Monmouth Boulevard. This is across from the large parking lot where we have the swap meet. I will open it up once I return with the Uhaul truck at approximately 4:30PM. We can only go in and out of that entrance. I will be loading the truck with as much as I can. We will have to do two loads. I still don't have enough volunteers for Saturday. If available, then EMAIL ME PRIVATELY BACK. I need to know how many I have for certain. Again. DON'T GO THROUGH THE FRONT GATE FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17. Joe and I will be doing some prep work from 5PM to 7:30PM tonight THURSDAY. I hope to have everything staged and ready to go for Friday. Saturday morning 6AM I drive the truck and unload, then go back for the second load. Take care! Compact Pro on floppy disk for Mac SE/30
by Jeffrey Brace 16 Oct '25

16 Oct '25

I have a special request for anyone coming to the swap meet. I need Compact Pro on Floppy Disk for the Mac SE/30 I'm trying to decompress some archives on multiple floppies. I've tried unsuccessfully to get working the copy of Compact Pro from Macintosh Repository, but it won't open with the StuffIt that I also downloaded from there. I tried using Floppy EMU, but it had issues recognizing files. Other ideas, then let me know. Hopefully I will have time on Sunday as I will be quite busy at the swap meet. I've been wanting to recover the files for many years now, but haven't had the time to work on this. I'd love to recover my 30 year old files from Drexel University. Thanks! VCF Swap Meet, MARCH Workshop, and Hack-a-Thon News
by Jeff Salzman 16 Oct '25

16 Oct '25

Hi everyone, Just a reminder: the MARCH Club Workshop is happening this weekend, October 18–19, 2025! If you haven’t signed up yet, you can add your name to the sheet here: 2025-10-18 October 18-19, 2025 - Google Sheets <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VjEFJF7lxYFgcdQk0OeNWjof1ZhrpYRPDqj…> Repair Workshops @ InfoAge – Vintage Computer Federation <https://vcfed.org/repair-workshops-at-infoage/> This Workshop coincides with the VCF Vintage Computer Swap Meet, so Saturday’s Workshop activities will begin around *2:00 PM* to allow time for Swap Meet participation. Buy your goodies at the Swap Meet, then attend the Workshop to try out and hash out the operation of all the stuff you bought. Details about the Swap Meet are available here: Vintage Computer Swap Meet – Vintage Computer Federation <https://vcfed.org/vcf-swap-meet/> There’s a lot of vintage computing goodness packed into this weekend, and with nice weather in the forecast, it’s shaping up to be a great time to join in. Due to the busy schedule and volunteer coordination between VCF and MARCH, we’ve made a last-minute decision to *postpone the Hack-a-Thon* originally planned for this weekend. It’s not cancelled... just rescheduled. The Hack-a-Thon will now take place during the *November 15–16, 2025 MARCH Workshop*. The concept and rules will remain largely the same, including the promised *Apple II+ system*. There may be minor updates to the rules, particularly regarding material sourcing, but the spirit of the challenge remains intact. You can follow updates on the Hack-a-Thon here: MARCH Hack-a-Thon: Free Pile Fabrication – Vintage Computer Federation <https://vcfed.org/2025/09/15/march-hack-a-thon-free-pile-fabrication/> This page will be refreshed with the new date and details in the coming weeks. VCF and MARCH are forward to seeing many of you this weekend! Jeff Salzman VCF Steering Committee member MARCH Workshop Manager

Would a VT52 emulator be too primitive? If not I have one on github: https://github.com/kgober/VT52 I could customize a version that connects to a specific serial port at startup and disables the menus, to keep users out of trouble. If primitive is exactly the vibe you want I also have a VT05 emulator: https://github.com/kgober/VT05 -ken On Tue, Oct 14, 2025 at 7:23 PM Martin A Flynn via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > Working on a potential exhibit for the museum. > > Sourced an Ultratec IntelleModem that does TTY/TDD for the hearing > impaired, looking for terminal emulation software that is simple enough > for the general public to use. > > In the distant past, I used an app called Futura-TTY, looking for an > archive copy or something similar. > > Cheers! > > Martin > >

By terminal emulation, do you mean TDD emulation specifically? > In the distant past, I used an app called Futura-TTY, looking for an > archive copy or something similar. There is a free trial program for Windows called ipTTY[2] which is basically a TDD-capable SIP client. I've used it before, and you can reset the 30-day free trial by deleting the registry keys it's created. I'm not seeing the free trial download on the website anymore, but I have a copy somewhere. At some point, I also wrote a fairly primitive terminal program[3] that can act as a console TDD, again using a SIP registration with an Asterisk server. I use a similar concept now to support relay services in the PhreakNet operator services system, if someone calls 711. Finally, for the server side, if that's what you're talking about, my maintained version of the Asterisk softmodem supports Baudot code (both 45.45 and 50 baud), so you can use that to proxy the TDD connection to a telnet server; I use this to allow TDDs to dial into the PhreakNet BBS. Working on a potential exhibit for the museum. Sourced an Ultratec IntelleModem that does TTY/TDD for the hearing impaired, looking for terminal emulation software that is simple enough for the general public to use. In the distant past, I used an app called Futura-TTY, looking for an archive copy or something similar. Cheers! Martin
