VERY IMPORTANT FESTIVUS 2018 INFO-MATION

Earlier I sent out the signup for Festivus. Here is more detailed info: *DATE:* December 1 & 2, 2018 *TIME:* Start about 10 A.M. on Saturday and goes late into the night until everyone sleeps. End about 5 P.M. on Sunday. (Re-starts around 10 A.M. Sunday morning) *LOCATION:* InfoAge Building 9010-D - (2201 Marconi Road, Wall Township, NJ) - It will be straight ahead once you enter through the gate. The door is marked Sandy Recovery and is up the steps. *PARKING:* InfoAge management wants us to park inside the campus, in a neat orderly row, between the Festivus building and the hackerspace building. The main parking lot remains available for guests of the model train show. Do not cost IA money by leaving it open to confuse paying guests. Always close it behind you when you enter/exit, EVEN IF IT WAS ALREADY OPEN! *COST:* $10 for all members attending Festivus, which VCF pays to InfoAge to rent the space and buy burgers, hot dogs and some supplies. $25 if you are staying overnight. See below for details. *EQUIPMENT:* VCF will have tables setup for food and games. We will have three full sized refrigerator to temporarily store food and drinks. VCF had a grill donated and will buy a propane tank to cook hamburgers and hot dogs outside. *DRINKS:* Everyone is encouraged to bring their own drinks and enough to share with others. Bring your favorite and put what you are bringing on the list: *FOOD:* VCF will be supplying burgers, hot dogs, condiments, plates, forks, napkins, cups. You are encouraged to bring your own favorite good and put what you are bringing on the list. If you are not sure what to bring, then ask me. Sorry to hear, that's a great loss. Always nice to hear about positive reactions from visitors. You're absolutely right, these are the type of people that help us. I neglected to mention two things. First is on a sad note. Those of you who may have toured through the other museums at Infoage over the years, particularly the military dioramas, would have likely met Ray Morgan, the WWII veteran who volunteered there often. Unfortunately Ray passed away this past Tuesday at the age of 96. He was an awesome man to talk to, and served with distinction at the battles of Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima to name a couple. (His stories were truly engaging about his time in the military) The viewing is tomorrow evening at Ely’s in Neptune. https://m.legacy.com/obituaries/mycentraljersey/obituary.aspx?n=raymond-b-m… Secondly, and on a much brighter note, Bill I. Stopped by for awhile at the beginning of the day, so he and I got to shoot the breeze for awhile as we had not seen each other for the past few months. It is amazing how even the quiet days (and we always get some of them) can be some of the most productive ones. That single visitor from the group showed more interest and genuine enthusiasm than I could have hoped for, and was talking about his next visit when he’d have more time to see other areas and bring family/friends back to see the computers as well. That one visitor can make the day, even if no one else shows up. That combined with the Korean War veteran and family I walked with over to the vehicle museum (he needed some help getting up the walkway and into the door) were excited to find out about the other museums (they bypassed most of Infoage to get to the vehicles) and were already planning their next visit. Got to the museum around 1:30 today. A large group was scheduled to arrive at Infoage at 3, so I figured I’d get up there as early as I could and have the museum open for other visitors as well. The plan was to split the 40-50 visitors into four groups who would then rotate through the museums every half hour. Needless to say that never quite happened! The group members arrived piecemeal, some never came, and a large group or two were put together and never left the main building. Myself and Dan next door in the Military Vehicle Museum had one visitor from the group walk down to us. He was a very interested Computer Engineer who spent a solid 30+ minutes in the museum with me. He was extremely interested throughout the tour and was glad he left the group and came down the road! I directed several people earlier in the day to the vehicle museum and other areas of Infoage, none of which wished to come see the VCF museum. I even tried to lure them in with promises of Model Railroads and Wireless Operators displays, but to no avail. Suffice to say I was pleased my single visitor for the day was a very good one! I’m also pleased to say it’s so much fun being able to see more and more of the machines up and running for visitors. All the major micros on the first shelf are running (Apple II, trs 80, PET, 5150, Lisa, Mac, C64, AT&T Unix PC, NeXT Cube, Etc) plus the HP in the mini section as well as the Univac (Bill D, we need to find out why the diagnostic you showed us how to run gives a program fault now) Can’t wait to see even more machines running in the future!!! IBM Series/1 Collecting?

Hi. All: Over the years, I've owned many systems, going back to 8080-based hardware. I've also had more than a few PDP-11 and MicroVAX systems. I'm now looking for something a little different and could use some guidance. In the early eighties, I worked for a company in NJ that refurbished IBM mainframe systems. They also sold Series/1 mini's. One of the partners was even developing the hardware interface and software for a cartridge tape backup system. For some reason, I now have the urge to play with a Series/1 system of my own. Thinking back, I've seen very little - if anything - about someone owning one. Perhaps there's a good reason for this. I'm also not seeing too much on used systems, peripherals, or software - like languages - I could use to develop some applications. Perhaps there's a good reason for that, too. Is it worth pursuing the acquisition of this old system or is it best left alone? Any constructive advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Cory Sickles

Asante EN/SC adaptor?

People are mentioning my name, regarding Mac SCSI to Ethernet adapters, because I have sold them in the past: http://www.retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/m_net.html I don't have any currently, and of course I can be asked privately. I'm interested in buying and in selling them. Many 68K Mac owners want these to "get their Mac on the Internet", so they are not cheap. An AAUI Friendlynet adapter was mentioned. That's Apple's AAUI to RJ45 Ethernet adapter I believe. That's not an Ethernet controller device, it's a mechanical cabling adapter. Herb -- Herbert R. Looking for Tandy 2000 disk and keyboard

All – A friend of mine is trying to restore his Tandy 2000 system, so I sent him a bunch of floppy images in IMD format, but it seems that one of them is corrupted. Specifically, I’m looking for the Videotex Plus disk (26-5260). I also just realized that Bitsavers doesn’t have a Tandy/RS section so at least I want to collect my disk images and upload them there. If anyone has any other disks, please send them to me so I can upload them As a side note, he gave me one of his spare 2000HD systems but it has no keyboard.
