Possibly OT: vintage vacuum tubes question
by Bob Shuster 10 Aug '26

10 Aug '26

In going through my FIL’s things I came across a box with a few hundred vacuum tubes, most just loose in the box. For reference, my FIL was a PhD electrical engineer who worked at RCA - on NASA and other projects - but also liked to build his own speakers and amplifiers. I do not have a tester and in fact my electrical knowledge starts with transistors. I don’t want to give these away - I’m sure he spent hundreds if not more on them - but I also don’t want to go through the process of packing them all for shipping. There are some monster 13cm x 5cm tubes down to smaller c. 5cm tubes. I will lay them out and take photos and try to do some ID, but does anyone have any thoughts on these - or perhaps any interest? - Bob Shuster

SGI 1600SW Multilink Adapter Available
by Stephen A Edwards 24 Jul '26

24 Jul '26

I have a rare SGI 1600SW MultiLink adapter, but alas, no SGI 1600SW LCD panel to mate it with. I'd hate to have to discard it because it must be extremely valuable to one of you. It converts things like DVI to their unusual LVDS-based monitor connection. In any case, I'm located in Manhattan (New York City) and would be happy to have you pick it up if you have use for it. Email me off-list if you're interested. Images of the box and adapter are at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1gxtef64wXoiL5FMIkRvllB-tbkmn8vmQ?us…

I know it's not quite vintage yet but thought I'd ask if there is anyone between Cecil county and Howard county Maryland that might have a compatible power supply. I know it's a long shot! Samsung NP350V5C-T02US, the DC power jack is: * Outer diameter: 5.5 mm * Inner diameter: 3.0 mm * Center pin: Yes This is commonly referred to as a 5.5 × 3.0 mm center-pin barrel connector. The original adapter specifications are: * Output: 19 V DC * Current: 3.16 A (60 W) * Connector: 5.5 × 3.0 mm with center pin any wattage above 60 should be fine! Re: NVR system for Camp Evans
by David Waybright 20 Jul '26

20 Jul '26

I know I'm getting to this email late. I love the idea to run a linux based camera system. Instead of moving to a Axis system I'd rather see you stay on the Linux system or move to a unifi protect system. the unifi protect now supports ONVIF cams so the existing cams should integrate nicely. The existing wyse cams might be able to record to both the linux based system and unifi protect but I would make sure they're in a vlan that can't talk to the internet so they can't phone home. The main reason I was thinking Unifi Protect is if you're thinking of a site hardening grant You could use both unifi protect for cams and unifi access for access control for not only buildings but also gates in the future. Slightly OT , vintage mini or mid AT case needed
by Sentrytv 29 Jun '26

29 Jun '26

Good afternoon to all. I don’t usually do this, but I am asking to see if anybody in the New Jersey area (Something close to me that I can pick up) Has a mini or mid – AT Tower case that I can use for a 486 set up. Must have all of the slots available for a baby AT motherboard. (Power supply area cannot cover any slots.) AT Power supply is optional, but not necessary. The case must be beige and in nearly very good condition. Nothing roached out or rusted out, please. This will eventually be for a production set up for a TV pilot. Please let me know here privately. > I’ve personally had good results with the Sandisk Max Endurance and Samsung Pro Endurance cards that are meant for security and dash cameras. These are not quite as good as the industrial cards though, and likely won’t be better at long term retention if that’s the issue. I can second this... well at least for other SanDisk pro-sumer cards. I've got a SanDisk Extreme PRO card that's been in my dashcam for 6 years (!!) and continues to be dead reliable. That's 6 years of extreme temps and constant writes. I also trust SanDisk because they honor their warranties. Jumping around this thread, I see there's 1 seller on Amazon with available 16GB SanDisk Industrial cards: https://a.co/d/0dDqTjBiI would hope these are less risky for fakes b/c the scammers favor the high-volume sales. As long as it identifies itself properly in Linux and/or the SanDisk Mac or Windows software, I'd feel like a card was probably legit. Finally, I'm not the most convenient but I can image the cube as well, if nobody beats me to it. -Jonathan

Me on TV...
by William Sudbrink 19 Jun '26

19 Jun '26

Well, we will see whether I shine in my 15 minutes of fame or embarrass myself, but I will be on Chesapeake Collectables, Maryland Public Television's version of Antiques Roadshow, on June 15th at 7:30pm. Also repeated a couple of times later in the week. I will be showing (having appraised) a full up operational Altair 8800 along with the January 1975 Popular Electronics and an ADM-3A. It was running CP/M along with a couple of simple programs I wrote to provide some blinkenlights. MPT even mentions it in the intro to the June program guide: https://files.constantcontact.com/e88923da701/caa9ca5e-e0fe-4677-81f3-af4ea… Folks from Pennsylvania down to Virginia should be able to watch it locally. I think it will end up on the PBS web site after a couple of months. If anyone desperately wants to see it, and I'm not too embarrassed by it, I may stream my part from my server. Message from Steve Lang, a trustee of InfoAge and part of the model train group: *"Members,* *Most all of the member groups of InfoAge use 9032A. The windows are in deplorable condition. Board of Trustees member Matt Sniffen has provided a quote to replace them. The cost of the replacement windows is between $10,000 and $11,000. He will put up $5000 and install them. The Garden State Central Model Railroad Club would like to raise the balance of approximately $5000. GSC will match all donations up to $2500 which doubles every dollar that is donated. To date I have gotten commitments of $550 from individuals and one member group. With the GSC matching donation that is $1100 and we are just getting started. Please consider this project as all of the members will benefit from it. * *R. Lee Felsenstein livestream Sun. June 14 at 1PM (Eastern): https://youtube.com/live/Js6R3OIxiKY *Title*: A Look at Personal Computer History and its Future. *Description*: Why did personal computers come into existence? What happened to the confident predictions for the future of microprocessors? Why and how did a stratum of ordinary people develop their skills to take control over the direction of the most consequential technology that was headed in a different direction? From the vantage point of 54 years of participation in the personal computer industry I will offer some observations and viewpoints which may help to explain how we got here and why each of us is a consequential player in one of the world's most exceptional and unpredictable processes of mass participatory technological development. Because of their very nature as programmable handlers of information we have already seized control of the direction of personal computers -- we now stand at the threshold of their futures facing many different possible paths, not all of which are positive. We have, as individuals and collectively as a community, accomplished great things, and I hope to make the case that we have the opportunity, by honoring and applying what we have learned, to take the technology to new places such that we continue our process of expanding human possibilities, while having fun at the same time. See you there! Jeff Brace

I wouldn't even know what to do with this stuff so it's not for me, but if anyone near Cherry Hill wants to take a chance on some clearly rather old looking PCBs that may or may not be for IBM computers, here you go. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1821942375676106/?

SUN box keyboard and mouse
by Gregg Levine 05 Jun '26

05 Jun '26

Hello! I have here a SUN SPARC 5 system. For the longest it originally ran headless and attempted to either keep up as my website's server. And of course supply me with local files. The website end was downed a while later, the serving of files ended soon after. Problem I now want to restart it as a desktop, and I believe it wears proprietary to SUN connectors for the keyboard and mouse. I did not see any at the swapmeet. 4 It did seem to wear a standard VGA type video out connector on its back though. Would anyone have a spare of the keyboard and mouse that would work on this system available? ---- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature was once found posting rude messages in English in the Moscow subway."

UK Atari STE on US via 240V transformer (50 vs 60 hz)?
by John Heritage 31 May '26

31 May '26

Hi folks, I'm importing an Atari STE from the UK, that requires 240V. I have a 120V to 240V transformer, and was wondering if that would work, or would there be a problem because the UK's grid runs at 50 Hz while the US grid runs at 60 Hz. I plan to replace the internal power supply with a modern 120V solution, but wanted to test the STE out of the box before I replaced the PSU. Thanks! John
