HP at the Swap Meet
by Mike Loewen 22 May '26

If anyone is interested in HP gear, I'll have the following at the Swap Meet on the 30th: Two HP 85A systems Three HP 85B systems One of the 85A systems is labeled SYVA LAB PROCESSOR 6000, but appears to be a bog-standard 85A. One of the 85B systems is labeled WILTRON MODEL 85, but is a standard 85B. The systems are all tested and in working condition, except for the tape drives (will need new capstan rubber). The printers all work. Assorted modules for the Series-80 systems, including: 82903A 16K Memory Module 82936A ROM Drawer 82937A HP-IB Interface 82939A RS-232 Module 82908A 64K Memory DC100A tape cartridges, NIB. WARNING: these will NOT work unless you replace the tension bands before using them. Stop by my table if you're interested. Swap Meet (5/30/26) update
by Jeffrey Brace 16 May '26

16 May '26

We are doubling the vendor space to 18' x 18'. We determined from a survey of the lot that a 9' x 18' space was too small. We have enough space in the new area to accommodate. When we had the big parking lot we didn't have parking lines, so it was hard to know exactly how much space people used. We are working on getting a food truck, but at this point there are no commercial trucks available or willing to do it. We were supposed to have the Fire Truck Museum guys, but they were not able to get any volunteers to do it. I found this out last minute after months of trying to nail down a commitment. We have the InfoAge Kitchen Truck, but we don't have volunteers to run it. They would need to be food safe certified, buy all the food, cook the food, get the Wall Township permit, etc. Getting a commercial food truck is next to impossible. Believe me, I tried for years to get one at the swap meet. They just don't think that they can make enough money on it. At VCF East, yes, they make money, but not for a swap meet. And it's tourist season too. We are getting vendors registering. Register here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdZcnVFT2lfJJuYwwJSwclxfyvZFBd1kp1… Take care! 8080 monitor command line processor help needed
by Richard Cini 15 May '26

15 May '26

All — I’m working on a reconstruction project (an unpublished time slicing OS for an 8080-target) and the command dispatcher code is missing. So, I’m trying to write a functional equivalent and I’m having some problems that I could use some help with. The OS is like a monitor but has a callable API (which I’m ignoring for now). The command loop is pretty generic — set the stack, get a line from the console, parse it and execute, and jump back. The “get line” is pretty generic and actually works fine. Grab chars and put them in a zero-terminated buffer; return on CR. The table of commands is structured like the following. The target address right now simply prints a unique character on the screen and jumps back to the top of the monitor loop via a RET (since the parser is call’ed). ; Command dispatch table, padded to max chars of 4 CMD_LEN equ 5 ; including NULL NUM_CMDS equ 26 CTABLE: db 'AS ',0 ; assign dw ASSIGN ; target address {25 additional entries} Here’s what I’ve come up with for the parse and execute routine, which admittedly is based on some AI stuff. ; ----------------------------- ; SEARCH - see of the command entered is valid. ; ----------------------------- PARSE: lxi H,TBUFF ; get ptr of command buffer MVI B,NUM_CMDS ; Set command count LXI D,CTABLE ; Point to command table LOOP: PUSH H ; Save input buffer pointer PUSH D ; Save table pointer CALL STR_COMPARE ; Compare input with table entry JZ CMD_FOUND ; If Zero flag set, strings match POP D ; Restore table pointer POP H ; Restore input pointer ; Move to next table entry LXI H,CMD_LEN + 2 ; Size of entry (string + address) DAD D XCHG DCR B ; Decrement command count JNZ LOOP ; Continue if more commands JMP CMD_NOT_FOUND CMD_FOUND: POP D ; Clean stack (table pointer) POP H ; Clean stack (input pointer) INX D INX D ; DE points to target address in table XCHG ; move to HL MOV A,M ; Get low byte of routine address MOV E,A ; set (DE) to command number MVI D,0 DAD D DAD D ; (HL)=(CMDADR)+2*(command number) MOV A,M ; now pick out this address INX H MOV H,M MOV L,A PCHL ;now execute it. ; Routines return to the monitor via a RET ; RET CMD_NOT_FOUND: XRA A ; sets Z-flag ret ;--- String Comparison Subroutine --- ; Inputs: HL = Input Buffer, DE = Table Entry ; Destroys: A, HL, DE ; Z=1 if match STR_COMPARE: MVI C,CMD_LEN ; Comparison length COMP_LOOP: LDAX D CMP M RNZ ; Return if not equal INX D INX H DCR C ; decrement count JNZ COMP_LOOP ; Loop XRA A ; Match found: set Zero flag RET In no case that I’ve experimented with does the parser print the right character for the routine that’s typed in. The character case is right — upper-case is returned from the keyboard input routine. It’s been a long time since I’ve worked in 8080 so a different set of eyes would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! 10th Anniversary of our current Museum 3.0!
by Jeffrey Brace 15 May '26

15 May '26

I was looking through some old e-mails and noticed that on April 15, 2016 we opened up our current version 3.0 of the VCF museum for VCF East 2016. It's hard to believe that so much time has passed for this version of the museum! I remember helping set it up and all the changes that have happened over the years. We took a few months to get everything moved from version 2.0 (9032-C) and set up in the existing spot in 9010-A. Jeff Brace

WTB/WTT: Mac SE/30 Motherboard
by Alexander Jacocks 11 May '26

11 May '26

All, I picked up a very interesting Micromac SE/30 upgrade chassis at VCF East (https://www.reddit.com/r/VintageApple/comments/ard4hj/mystery_micromac_micr…) this year. The logic board installed in it is heavily battery bombed, which isn’t a great surprise. I will eventually build a new SE/30 motherboard for it, but I’d like to find a functional SE/30 board to use to test the video adapter and custom riser. Please let me know if you have a spare that you’d be willing to part with. I’m in Atlanta this week, so if you’re in the area, let me know. Thanks! - Alex

VCF swap meet renaming suggestion and map mistake?
by bernieS 06 May '26

06 May '26

The name, "Vintage Computer Swap Meet" is likely to dissuade some people from coming if they infer that only vintage computers will be for sale. Because LOTS of non-computer electronic equipment will be available, I suggest the event be renamed as "Vintage Computer & Electronics Swap Meet" to be more accurate and descriptive. This is event name that should be sent to the ARRL Hamfests & Conventions Calendar for publication on their website. http://www.arrl.org/hamfests/search/page:1/Location.state:NY/model:Event I have been attending hamfests and vintage radio and telephone equipment swap meets for more than 50 years and the convention is to name the event descriptively and accurately so attendees know what to expect. Also, the map at: https://vcfed.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05 Swap_Meet_Map_VCF_Brookdale-1.png says: "OLD SWAT MEET LOCATION". This might be a typo, or maybe it was intentional should the SWAT team show up again. They can go there and stay out of our way while they play with their guns and dogs and drones for hours and practice bossing each other around instead of our people. -bernieS > Date: Mon, 4 May 2026 08:00:00 -0400 > From: Jeffrey Brace <jeffrey(a)vcfed.org> > Subject: [vcf-midatlantic] New VCF Swap Meet Location (right across > the street) > To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> > > As you can see from this picture: > https://vcfed.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Swap_Meet_Map_VCF_Brookdale-1.… > > The swap meet will be in a new location (right across the street from the > old location). Re: Printers was MSDOS
by Jeffrey Golas 04 May '26

04 May '26

I had a model 32 teletype at my Exhibit this year, which I think sometimes got more interest than the actual exhibit. It was mistaken for a 33 as they look similar but very different inside. I almost brought an epson dot matrix to print weather maps but ran out of table and car space. I also bought the Next laser printer in the consignment, we'll see if I can get it going. It would be cool to do a big focus on printing! Jeff

Lost Fluke in CDL (VCF East)
by CJ Reha 02 May '26

02 May '26

Hi all, This is perhaps a bit embarrassingly late, but I'm finally getting unpacked from VCF East and realized my Fluke multimeter is missing. I was using it for a time in the CDL to work on a few CRT monitors, and I think in the fog of confusion surrounding the unfortunate events on Sunday I may have left it in there by accident. If anyone sees a kinda dirty Fluke 87 III with a nice set of Pomona probes please let me know! Frankly I care a lot more about the probes than the meter, they were expensive!! :) All the best, CJ

UU NET archives
by Gregg Levine 01 May '26

01 May '26

Hello! Back around the early days of Linux, I ran a 2.2.18 kernel setup on a Dell. It was connected to the Internet via an external modem, (the Dell normally ran Windows 98SE and the modem was an internal Windows only one.) I would from time to time visit the FTP site behind UU NET and noted the presence of compressed source code archives. I would then download any of them, and extract them appropriately, they were SHAR archives, and I was able to do so. Naturally not all of them would work. That is to compile using the tools found in those days. I do not even think they will work today. Naturally when the vendor behind the site was bought by Verizon, I noted that it all went away. Would anyone besides Dave M, know where the site was saved to before it was turned off by mistake. (I wrote and asked Dave M directly.) Oh and the dino is asleep until July. ---- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature was once found posting rude messages in English in the Moscow subway."

I did not take a lot of pics this year like I usually do...sorry. Mostly I got the OSI exhibit tables because that's where I was most if the time. I included some pics of the museum, too. https://www.vintagecomputer.net/vcf2026/ and if youre interested in Ohio Scientific Challenger 1P computer hacking I took a lot of new pics of the more modified of the two 1Ps I exhibited: https://www.vintagecomputer.net/osi/Challenger_1P/ (click the File Date column header to see the new files by date) if you see any errors in the photos' names let me know Bill

VCF swap meet May 2026
by Sentrytv 22 Apr '26

22 Apr '26

Good afternoon to all: I have a couple of questions about the swap meet parking. Are the attendees/buyers supposed to park in the small lot which has about 30 spaces? I see the large lot has about 130 spaces and I assume that that is for vendors? Or is parking for attendees/buyers across the street? Please let me know. Thank you. Anyone ever Virt to Phys a Win2K install?
by Ethan O'Toole 20 Apr '26

20 Apr '26

I have an event coming up this weekend and part of our duties is to put out a spread of vintage computers and game consoles for the evening party. I am thinking about putting out a Win2K box to drive an Intelligent Systems Gameboy Advance development platform. It is SCSI. Fastest route in my mind is to install win2K in VirtualBox using really generic hardware (IDE, VGA, etc.) Copy on the Adaptec SCSI drivers, any system drivers I might find and the Intelligent Systems from ISO I see on Archive.org then dd that out to a real disk. Anyone try this or will it be blue screen city due to the underlying hardware changes? I have experience doing this in Windows XP for arcade game foolery but not Win2K or earlier. The host is a small form factor Compaq desktop that is probably from the XP era. - Ethan

Have extra table space for VCF East!
by Dave Shevett 16 Apr '26

16 Apr '26

Sharing this to a couple places, as we're close to the show... Hey folks, it looks like I have 2 tables reserved, but I won't be needing one of them (it's a long story). If anyone is looking for an exhibit space or wants to bring hardware in the 'small business' arena (think 80's machines built for business, not gaming), I'd be happy to give space. I'm bringing my unixpc (that's my centerpiece), a few DEC pc's, and a Kaypro, but i have plenty of other space. Let me know (email is fine) and I'm happy to share.

Looking for cheap rackmount gig switch and rackmount power strip
by Ethan O'Toole 15 Apr '26

Building out a 2nd small rack for events and I am looking to buy a small cheap rackmount switch. Netgear 16 port with rack ears, DLink, etc. Something like that. 10" depth max. No heavy Cisco/Juniper/Arista for this project. Also looking for another rack mount 1u power strip. Not looking for heavy or managed, just the metal box that usually has 6 or more plugs on the back and maybe one on the front. I will be @ VCF East! HMU if you have something you are trying to clear out! - Ethan

Anyone have an Atari STacy I could borrow at VCF?
by Ethan O'Toole 15 Apr '26

15 Apr '26

Heya! I pulled out my STacy, and I am getting stuck in this issue where the power supply cycles. Something is shorting and dragging down the PSU. I am not seeing a dead short tho, it happens after it comes up. I had recapped the power supply board when I got the machine -- and it was working. Mostly. I've had some strange issues. It's an annoying design where the machine gets 17vdc center pin positive which hits a sub pcb that is a switchmode supply generating 5/12v and running the inverter for LCD backlight. It's connected via pin headers and humps the main board -- so it's not possible to easily run the power supply without the main board until I build a test harness. I just got done recapping main board hoping one of the electrolytics was going to short after power on but still getting same issues. I plan to continue to troubleshoot it, but as a backup plan does anyone have one I could use for my display @ VCF if mine continues to not cooperate? I plan to run Notator or Cubase on it with midi synths and stuff.

Revision 2026 Demos
by Ethan O'Toole 11 Apr '26

11 Apr '26

Lots of neat demos at the revision competition over the weekend. I caught a bit of the livestream near the end. A few good Amiga demos that target A500 512kb + 512kb OCS, no accelerators. Razor 1911 stole the PC demo competition with this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dybkLM-1eQo Killer throwback PC demo dialup days and all that. It looks better running on a real PC (Windows 10/11, doesn't work with Intel integreated you need a GPU I think? Also windows says it's a virus you need to whitelist it.) The compression of the youtube video looses that some of the pixels are ascii art at really hi res and stuff. Also they chopped it at the end, it's got a lot of scroll on the real one but they cut it on the livestream. There was some other good PC demos and a lot of stuff showing up in random languages and strange hardware.

Apple TimeMaster
by Hopkins, Justin 08 Apr '26

Restarting this thread without the Digest stuff clogging it up. I know next to nothing about these, but it appears they did not come with drivers, but instead came with an on-board ROM and the install procedure is to flip Dip switch 1 to the on position to initialize the card on the first boot, then flip it off to use. Is this the one you have? https://wiki.preterhuman.net/Applied_Engineering_Timemaster_II the HO has 4 DIP switches, but this one has 8. Apple II - TimeMaster (1?) Card
by Jeff G 07 Apr '26

07 Apr '26

So I'm trying hard to get some of my crap working for VCF and silly me picked up an Applied Engineering TimeMaster clock card for my Apple II, really because a piece of software I'm hopefully showing off used it (and I found the orig manual to it, which may or may not be available online). That said, I have no software, and now realizing that, well, I can't set the time on the thing. I may be able to dump the rom and find a way to set it manually I guess via pokes somehow, but I'm not an Apple II expert at all (although having fun with it). Does anyone happen to have the software to this? Note that this is NOT the "H.O" card; I tried the software for that, and naturally it doesn't work as it tries to detect the card. Jeff

Tracy Kidder, author of "The Soul of a New Machine", dead at 80
by bernieS 05 Apr '26

05 Apr '26

Some list members surely remember--and may have been profoundly influenced by--reading "The Soul of a New Machine" (1981) by Tracy Kidder. It influenced me. Tracy died this past week at 80. His book won the 1982 National Book Award for Nonfiction and a Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction, and was about two competing Data General 32-bit minicomputer design groups in the 1970's developing machines to challenge DEC's VAX minicomputers. It's an enthralling read. If you're not going to read the book, at least read the Wikipedia entry for it (below.) https://apnews.com/article/tracy-kidder-death-writer-soul-new-machine-fc0f1… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Soul_of_a_New_Machine -bernieS

UNIVAC card ID
by Bill Degnan 04 Apr '26

04 Apr '26

I am curious what early 1970's system or peripheral this controller card came from. Because it came from a collection of UNIVAC items, I assume but cannot confirm it's a UNIVAC controller. The chip dates are circa 1971, I think. https://www.vintagecomputer.net/UNIVAC/UNIVAC-controller_front.png https://www.vintagecomputer.net/UNIVAC/UNIVAC-controller_rear.png I could not find the part number. In 1971 UNIVAC was still selling things from the 9000 and 1100 series, and probably some later 418/419's 36 pins on the backside of the card THanks in advance Stumped Bill

Doom on the Univac 1219B!
by Jeffrey Brace 03 Apr '26

03 Apr '26

Yes! Can you believe it? Years ago Bill Dromgoole diagnosed, troubleshooted and repaired the Univac 1219B that sits in the VCF museum. As far as we know the only one of its kind still in operation. At every VCF East for years he has demonstrated this machine to visitors and lamented "I don't know what to demo". Everyone was happy just to see it working, the blinking lights, the loud noise, the tapping of the teletype and Bill's explanation of how it worked. About 4 years ago a young whippersnapper Steve Schivone came along and was fascinated by this machine and wanted to learn all about it. I mean, can you blame him? Learning to use a working mainframe computer? Bill Dromgoole took him in as an apprentice and he learned this system in and out. A few months ago Steven met some other "young" guys who thought using and learning about this system would be cool! So they got to thinking. "What can we do with this system?". So they made a C compiler. Not satisfied, they created a BASIC interpreter. Then they loaded the Oregon Trail. Imagine playing that on a teletype machine on a machine used for ballistics control on a naval ship! Next up was a series of common BASIC programs and games like Zork. And "modern" games like Wordle. All very cool. then they were like Light Speed is too slow, let's go to Ridiculous Speed. So they created a Minecraft server on the machine! What an incredible and fun feat! Who would have ever thought of such a thing! But ... they were not satisfied. They needed to go to Ludicrous Speed! So they made Doom on this machine. Yes. Doom! The thing that everyone making a new innovative system uses as a test "Does it play Doom?". I couldn't believe it was possible, but I saw it with my own eyes! So when you are at VCF East, stop by the Univac found in the Vintage Computer Museum and play all these fun games! VCF East runs April 17-19. The demo will run Saturday and Sunday 1PM to 3PM April 18 & 19. Take care! Jeff Brace VCF East Showrunner
