Hero Robot 11/18 Kennett Classic 11-3PM
by Bill Degnan 09 Nov '23

09 Nov '23

Clarification to Earlier Post Someone is bringing a Hero Robot to Kennett Classic on November 18th. It will be there from approx. 11AM-3PM EST. The gentleman just wanted to show it to me and whomever else is interested to look it over and possibly test. The person has books and I believe everything, he just wants to share it with like minded people and maybe have a little fun with it at the museum. Sorry about the confusion from my earlier post. Again, if you want to keep informed about Kennett Classic activities, join the mailing list from kennettclassic.com by filling out the contact form there. Also...to be announced this weekend we have an 8080 homebrew system to work on, with front panel lights and switches, should be a fun project. Bill Kennett Classic 126 S. I have some knowledge on these robots that I might be able to chime in on. Considering I have a few in various states of operation and the manuals/books that might be good for reference. Is this being done at Kennett or InfoAge that Saturday? I might be able to make the trip over with some reading materials. Cheers Lou

White Glove Freight Service Recommendation
by Jonathan Chapman 08 Nov '23

All, I have a customer who needs two pallets worth of equipment packed up and shipped to my dock, but can't do the packing. The equipment is located in California, and will be coming to Virginia. We're a commercial building on my end but it sounds like it'll be coming out of a residence. I need recommendations on "white glove" packing and crating services. Thanks, Jonathan

OT: Landline in NY/NJ Area
by Stephen A Edwards 07 Nov '23

07 Nov '23

I'm trying to get a computer device c. 1999 to "phone home": it includes a relatively fast voiceband modem (I'm not sure of the exact speed) that needs to be connected to a POTS landline (i.e., RJ-11). It's not a fax modem, but it's playing at least as many tricks as a fax modem. I've currently tried about 6 different variants of VoIP/cable modems and they all don't work to varying degrees. I've tried seemingly every setting (codec -- I'm using the recommended G117u, jitter control, RTP packet size, echo cancellation off, etc.) on a Cisco SPA112 ATA I borrowed and it connects for a minute or two before giving up: the best behavior I've observed. I'm convinced that it won't work without connection to a traditional landline, i.e., that's connected to the PSTN through a T1 or equivalent circuit-switched, synchronous connection. Is there anybody in the New York City/New Jersey area who has an old-school landline (i.e., not from a cable modem or equivalent) that I could experiment with for an hour or so? Contact me off-list

Announcement of warehouse closure & improvements
by Thomas G 07 Nov '23

07 Nov '23

Hello, After 18 years of acquiring artifacts, our warehouse is in need of reorganization, as well as major renovation work - climate control, roof repairs, etc. A total restructuring, inventorying, and refurbishment of the warehouse is planned to commence soon - some steps such as the installation of climate control have already been taken - however, planning this process is made difficult by the fact that a number of our members have their own personal belongings stored within, many without proper tagging or documentation as such. On January 1st, 2024, the VCF warehouse at Infoage will be closed for renovation and organization. During this time, no items will be permitted in or out of the warehouse bar those permitted *directly* by the VCF Warehouse manager - Thomas Gilinsky - during monthly repair workshops. As such, if you have any personal belongings stored within the warehouse, and would like to retrieve it, or have it tagged and set aside for you to collect later, please contact either me at thomas.gilinsky(a)vcfed.org, or Doug at douglas.crawford(a)vcfed.org. Please provide *verifiable* *proof* that the item you are describing is your possession. *ITEMS WHICH ARE NOT CLAIMED BY JANUARY 1ST, 2024 WILL BE ASSUMED TO BE THE POSSESSIONS OF VCF.* Donations to VCF will still be accepted during this time - we have other areas to store them while the warehouse is reorganized. Thanks, Thomas Gilinsky Vintage Computer Federation Warehouse Manager

Drone view of the Swap Meet and Wall NJ
by Herbert Johnson 05 Nov '23

05 Nov '23

> The Video is long but I really liked the drone shots of Wall. It's a great video of the VCFed-Mid Swap Meet, but... Given the long shadows and low sun, it only shows the FIRST HOUR of the event, maybe pre-opening forward. I set up just after 9AM and there was *another row* of sellers by then (say another 15% more). So there was more show than this video shows, no complaints of course. And the later hours matter. There were good buyer-deals near the last hours of the event, which (unlike most hamfests) really kept going after 12 noon, past 1PM. The place didn't really empty out, until closing at 2PM. By the end, the VCF "free pile" included some late-model PC's and some tower Macs, other 90's stuff that 10-20 years from now you'll remember when "they couldn't give 'em away". I had a good time, did well enough, and I wasn't aware of anyone who was unhappy. But I was too busy to see, do, and hear everything. It's good there's videos and photos around, I enjoyed spotting things and people in the video. regards Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Fiche documentation for all of VM/ESA
by Gregg Levine 03 Nov '23

03 Nov '23

Hello! One of the people on the regular Z/VM list many years ago had a copy of the Fiche behind VM/ESA (I do not know what version), this is the entire source code reduced to Fiche. Would the actual VCF offices in NJ want these? Failing that does anyone on the list want these? Please note that the box is a heavy one. Oh and the wandering dino is currently asleep inside the (new) warehouse area. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8(a)gmail.com "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again."

Swap Meet October 2023 Wrap up
by Jeffrey Brace 03 Nov '23

03 Nov '23

Hello everyone! I was so glad to see all of you there and very happy at the success that it was. So many happy people both the buyers and the sellers. Glad that the swap meet is growing. The food sales by the Fire Museum was really great! They made $600 towards their museum. I appreciated the volunteers from the Sea Cadets. This helped make the event more organized. I'm losing count, but I believe that this was our 6th swap meet and it keeps getting better! Thanks so much to all the volunteers who made my job easier! I look forward to planning the next swap meet which will be in June and making it bigger and better for everyone. I hope to someday fill up that parking lot! Until the next time. Thanks! Glad it's not closer, my wife would kill me...
by Herbert Johnson 02 Nov '23

02 Nov '23

Well, Bill considered that these Intel Multibus boxes are interesting systems to some, as they are to others like us who used them in the 1970's era. It's quite a pile. If they look in sad condition, well, they look well used and they *are* half a century old. I'm old myself but hopefully not so sad looking! These blue-boxes reflect the state of the art, of industrial microcomputing development, going into the late 1970's. Also consider: there's members of this list outside of New Jersey. It's quite an auction, an estate sale, so for some it's an opportunity. Not much notice, as I post this it's the first day of the auction already. Still, it's interesting to see these things "in the wild", and see they pop up for sale decades after most were scrapped. If some people had not rescued yesterday's computers from the scrap pile, like the person who owned this estate, they would not be available to us today. regards Herb Johnson > William Sudbrink [replied] > I guess it depends on how badly you want an Intel MDS system. Who are our Atari experts at the NJ Repair workshops?
by Neil Cherry 31 Oct '23

31 Oct '23

I worked with Andy (from DC, hope I got that correct) on a couple of his Atari drive (1050 and XF551). The Atari XF551 is a 5 1/4" 40 track drive. We could access it but not read or write to the drive. Could be the head, could be the driver, could be alignment. But this was beyond me with what we had available. Good new is we managed to get a troublesome 1050 work but I'm not sure how (VooDoo). Anyways, Andy was supposed to meet with someone. But I don't know who. I did give him some useful tips as I have A8's (Atari 8-bits). Honeywell Engineer needs floppy disk help
by Jeffrey Brace 27 Oct '23

27 Oct '23

Got a phone call today from an engineer at Honeywell Aerospace. Anyone interested in helping him troubleshoot over the phone? He lives in Arizona. Here is what he said: “ - There is a 5-1/4” floppy diskette created in 1995 that can no longer be read by the Honeywell designed equipment. - We found one 5-1/4” floppy diskette from our Test Group that works in the Honeywell designed equipment. - We need to make additional copies of the working 5-1/4” floppy diskette. It contains one executable file on it. - We have tried making copies, on an IBM Compatible PC from 1995, but the floppy disk doesn’t work in the Honeywell designed equipment. - It looks like the disk is being read by the Honeywell designed equipment but after a few seconds from reading the disk the system fail light turns on. - We would like your help to see if we can make a working copy from the original 199X created Floppy Disk. ”

Swap meet items

I signed up and started a sheet of items I know I'm bringing. I know there is a "wanted" spreadsheet but don't see a lot of activity. Is anyone looking for anything in particular? I have a closet full of floppy drives. Assorted MFM/RLL hard drives (of unknown veracity, but will let go cheap). Oodles of ISA cards (Sound, network, serial, video, other...) Anyone specifically looking for a Tandy Model 2000 computer, minus monitor? How about a complete Model 600 (I would want $75 for this). NB this is a 600, not a 6000. They're pretty rare. That's all for now. Kelly

Time to get your stuff ready! 10 days to go before the swap meet! According to Accuweather it will be between 46 and 62 degrees, partly cloudy, 5% chance of rain. This is exactly how I ordered it, so I expect delivery on my good weather ;) Here is all the info: https://vcfed.org/vcf-swap-meet/ Thanks! Anyone need 2 of these? Make an offer (any offer). Spare units that have been out of service for more than a year. I can bring them to the swap meet. Kelly

Change in CDL practice
by Martin A. Flynn 13 Oct '23

13 Oct '23

With several high-dollar items going missing, we are considering a change in policy: The change is as follows: Unless something is tagged as "to be scrapped" or "available for re-use", the assumption will be that the equipment / parts are someones personal property, regardless if their name is on it or not. Requesting feedback from all involved. Martin Flynn

OT: help with cable ID
by Bob Shuster 11 Oct '23

Thank you all! Yes, #1 is indeed USB mini-A, and #2 is indeed USB micro-B! I checked #3 against all the old digital cameras I have here but I suspect it’s from one that I no longer own, so into the bin with those. Appreciate the help. - Bob > Message: 2 > Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2023 16:34:11 -0400 > From: Bob Shuster <bob(a)theshusters.com> > To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> > Subject: [vcf-midatlantic] OT: help with cable ID > Message-ID: <559BC7C2-ACFE-49FC-B517-0FA694393FBB(a)theshusters.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 > > Going through a bin of USB cables I came across some cables with connectors that I don?t recognize. They?re numbered 1, 2, and 3 in the photo. Each has a USB-A male connector on the other end, and I have a second cable with the #3 connector that has white and yellow RCA male connectors (mono audio and video?) The #3 cables also each have a ferrite choke on them. They are not USB mini-B. Can anyone help ID these? > > https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SPB9ueX19DDGexljSY-n1780ukn40ALv/view?usp=… > > Hopefully the link goes through. > > Thanks. - Bob > > ------------------------------ > > Message: 3 > Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2023 16:43:20 -0400 > From: Matthew Martin <cajunc2(a)gmail.com> > To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> > Cc: Bob Shuster <bob(a)theshusters.com> > Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] OT: help with cable ID > Message-ID: <3E71496D-B676-48F4-B41E-B7EE811F0804(a)gmail.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 > > #1 looks like USB Mini-A for OTG devices (hence an A connector on both ends) > #2 is USB Micro-B > #3 is likely a proprietary connector for a digital camera which does USB and (with the other cable) A/V out from the camera. > > -Matthew
