OT: Anyone working/playing with AI professionally?
by Herbert Johnson 16 Dec '25

16 Dec '25

> Code and enjoy the actual results of what you want and need, not the arcane creation of it. If you say "i enjoy the creation of it" then stop reading here and go fuzt around and enjoy your own thing. I want the results of the programming, i.e. the program! - Andrew Diller No criticism, but my understanding of what you are saying, is that these AI tools are turning "craft" into "production". That's not a bad thing for those consuming the production, or profiting from it. Not so good a thing for the crafters, except for those who go into production, or those who do very-custom work. If I'm correct, the more fitting analogy would not be "printing press" - that automated printing, scaled up production of texts. AI coding is about automating content (re)creation. Consider textiles. Automated cloth production changed clothing into a commodity and also made patterns easy to produce and change; and yet crafted clothing is still valued. So in a way, cheaper/better cloth supported more tailoring and design jobs, sales support, etc. So we'll see how far up the food-chain that AI coding will eat jobs, careers. Will the AI's "pull up the ladder" of learning to code, by eliminating what amounted to on-the-job training? An ironic comparison might be with shoemaking, as in the history of "saboteurs". People already mess with AI training to confuse and misdirect the models. But sometimes the models misdirect us, "we become the product" as suggested before. Just to add some vintage computing relevance. Consider how vintage computing advanced as various parts of computer production were automated, or made standard/regularized. Standard logic chips (RTL, DTL, TTL, CMOS), common microprocessor brands/models. Certainly building blocks like memory chips and modules. "the IBM PC" became a templates computer design down to bus and modules in the X86 architecture. S-100 worked across platforms. all these, made it easier to design products, and brought prices down to increase the customer base. Applications followed. Arduino (the IDE, the library, the flavor of C used) allowed fairly ordinary techies to build embedded applications just for fun, on ever-cheaper little ARM boards (discarded cell-phone system-on-chips). Further back: regularized high-level languages versus assembly language. Those were technical achievements in their time, to have computers run programs that could process "conversational" logic statements and produce machine codes based on standardized and tested libraries of functions, interfaces, calls to operating systems. another vintage thought. some of this AI stuff will (maybe has) become "vintage" computing, things people remember using, designing, producing, selling. Might be fun to come up with example vintage AI technologies, as things and codes to save, restore, display. I'll stop with that suggestion, that seems the most productive idea I've mentioned. Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Breaking down Festivus, any helpers?
by Ian Litchfield 14 Dec '25

14 Dec '25

Joe, I get your frustration on this, but blasting the mailing list to call people out the day after the party is not the way to go about. I’ll be honest I had zero intentions of showing up the next day, I was not a volunteer. I did not reach out to do such. I only came to attend in the allotted time on saturday, and have fun and I did. I want to thank you for those who worked to plan this event, setup, and break down. But I agree that others were not properly informed that breakdown would happen at 9am. Many of us are over an hour away, and not everyone has a vehicle that up to the task of driving through snow and slush. You can’t fault anyone for “the roads” not being ‘bad’ because I assure you I have a picture that cannot be sent on this mailing list due to technical restrictions, that not every town was plowed by 10am. We ended up getting snowed in this morning. I’m going to be really honest the whole issue of a lack of communication and the constant finger pointing and blaming is one of the reasons why I rarely show up anymore… I hope everyone who came had a festivus! -Ian L.

Breaking down Festivus, any helpers?
by Joseph Giliberti 14 Dec '25

14 Dec '25

I know it was discussed at the town hall that people need to step up more often to help out. Why is it that Jeff and I are the only ones cleaning up today? The roads aren't that bad. No one should have needed advance notice that we would need to clean up after the party. Come on, people!

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Breaking down Festivus, any helpers?

Joe, What was discussed was the lack of communication from event runners letting people know ahead of time what responsibilities need to be covered by helpers and volunteers. Many people involved in this org for 10+ years have stepped up, worked hard, and done a lot. We would show up, someone would say “hey can anyone help with setting up tables” and we would. But over the last few years we’ve showed up. Seen people working, ask if we can help, and get confused “I don’t know, you’d have to ask someone in charge.” Etc. The roads aren’t too bad, I agree, but some people have multiple hour drives to airports to catch a plane home. Some people have multiple hour drives home, etc. We used to stay on site and plan to stay longer. But most of us can’t justify $400~ for multiple nights of hotels to show up a night early and stay an extra night after. Also announcements about asking for help the day of or day before or day after while people are driving is not enough heads up. You need to be discussing this when the event is announced. I am looking back now, the original announcement in May for Festivus was just saying it’s December 13th. I had it on my calendar, I had plans to be here one day. Then a few weeks before I see the second announcement in November also saying Saturday only, no overnight stays, only event is 6pm town hall. Then a million links, which now looking closer I do see the volunteer sign up sheet near the bottom which is the only thing mentioning Friday and Sunday. And I see zero people put their name on there, meaning I was probably not the only person who didn’t see it. Either way please speak to the volunteers who owe this org nothing, which includes yourself, with more respect. You and everyone who helps no matter how little they do deserves recognition and respect. -Connor K > On Dec 14, 2025, at 11:01 AM, Joseph Giliberti via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic(a)lists.vcfed.org> wrote: > > I know it was discussed at the town hall that people need to step up more > often to help out. Justin, Thanks for letting everyone know about this. I'm not sure if you were trying to attach a picture, but FYI: this discussion list doesn't support attachments. It is necessary to have a link to any pictures or attachments. MDA Monitor
by Hopkins, Justin 06 Dec '25

06 Dec '25

Stumbled across this today. On the estate sales website, there is an estate sale in Upper Saddle River going on December 6 and 7th, with a picture of what I am pretty sure is an Smith Corona HRM2 monochrome monitor. It runs on the Smith Corona PWP module (which isn't pictured in the estate sale), but I also think it was compatible with Hercules MDA graphics cards used on the first IBM PC. That is a little far for me to get it and bring it to an event. Jeff, Unfortunately, its not mine to sell. My friend who builds custom keyboards purchased it. Since you have an actual 510 terminal, maybe you and them could work something out (working on IBM PCs and terminals, I well know the struggle of not being able to afford/find/obtain a keyboard for a computer). I'll copy your message to them and see what they say. Info needed on strange AT&T/Olivetti keyboard
by danfitz 04 Dec '25

04 Dec '25

A friend of mine is a keyboard head and just purchased a funky keyboard from the estate sale of a former Bell Labs employee. They are trying to figure ou t what computer this thing is actually designed for, and could use some help. With the amount of former AT&Ters on this mailing list, I figured this would be as good a place as any to start. The keyboard can be viewed by its' original ebay listing: https://u9396777.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=u001.nLjt1y3hHfeY9eAAc7Usmupr… You can see that it uses an 8-pin shielded data link (SDL) cable to connect the keyboard to the computer. This is _different_ from the 6-pin SDL that IB M used to connect the PS/2 mini-DIN cable to the original Model M keyboard. While it isn't branded, its clearly using the AT&T/Olivetti design language, which makes sense given that its coming from a former Bell Labs person. Any thoughts? NCR Deskmate CP/M format
by Herbert Johnson 29 Nov '25

29 Nov '25

> I am trying to understand the disk layout for a NCR Deskmate CP/M system https://oldcomputers.dyndns.org/public/pub/rechner/ncr/dmv/manuals/ncr_dmv_… Manual page 3-3. Decision Mate V "the formatting facility designates the surface 1 tracks with the track numbers 40 through 79." That suggests (but doesn't require) that files proceed from surface 0 track whatever, track whatever+1, ...., 39, surface 1 track 40, 41, ... 79. But how it's formatted may not correspond to the "logical order". Earlier in the document, Boot, BIOS, CCP and BDOS are on the disk side 0 and the first 3 track. The "acid test" would be to find CP/M-80 asm.com on the NCR disk and walk through sectors to see where it lives. I assume you can read hex codes. If you obtain a known asm.com binary elsewhere (pretty common) as a single file, you can pace yourself through that known binary, to find the corresponding unknown binary on the NCR diskette. if asm.com on the NCR disk is the earliest file, then it ought to start after the end of the directory sectors. Of course, it may not. http://www.cpm.z80.de/download/bootdmv.zip Is this where you found the disk image? Regards Herb -- Herbert R. I am pleased to announce that we at LSSM have just gotten our VAX-11/780 up and running! Now we have to clean up the debugging and repair mess, clean up the cabling, arrange for a permanent system disk, etc, then we will declare it an "operational exhibit". Festivus - Dead 34" monitor; does anyone want it?
by John Heritage 28 Nov '25

28 Nov '25

Hey folks - I hope all is well; I have a ~ 10 year old LG 34UM95 that my father was using that died during a power outage recently. It's a 3440x1440 60hz IPS display, and it won't power on. It's a "flat" (no curve) 21:9 screen, and rather than e-Waste this I was wondering if anyone would want this? I can drop off at Festivus. (It *appears* the power supply is working and there may be something wrong inside the monitor. I haven't done any substantial diagnosis -- and it's just sitting in it's original box with stand right now in my garage). Thanks! John

MARCH Steering Committee Nominations
by Thomas G 16 Nov '25

16 Nov '25

Esteemed Members of the VCF-MidAtlantic/MARCH mailing list, It's that time of the year again! Festivus is barely a month away, and as such it's time to begin the electoral process for membership of the MARCH steering committee, which is the elected body responsible for managing/overseeing our operations at Infoage - such as the museum, the workshops, the collection, the festivals/fundraisers, etc.. There are currently two seats up for election/reelection: Thomas Gilinsky's, and Dean Notarnicola's. The election will be held as defined in section 4 of the MARCH charter, as found at the following link: https://vcfed.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/VCFMA_Charter_Nov_2024.pdf (It is highly recommended that you read through this document if you have any questions or curiosities about the function/purpose of the steering committee! It has also seen a number of revisions since the last election.) Anyone who directly receives this message and has been a member of the VCF Mailing List for at least 30 days is eligible to vote. There is no 30 day restriction to mailing list membership to be nominated as a candidate. Current members of the mailing list in good standing are eligible to submit nominations for Committee member candidates, however when making your nominations, the following two requirements from the bylaws must be kept in mind: ● Prospective committee members should be knowledgeable in some aspect of computing, preferably vintage computers, and show a demonstrated interest in vintage computing, computing history, and museum management and governance. ● In order to be sufficiently aware and have proper perspective of MARCH issues, prospective committee members should be able to physically visit InfoAge at least quarterly and attend meetings regularly, as well as demonstrate familiarity with the operations of MARCH regarding the museum, collection, restorations, events, etc. which it is responsible for. Nominations can be made by simply communicating the nomination via e-mail to a current Committee member: Thomas Gilinsky - thomas.gilinsky(a)vcfed.org, Douglas Crawford - douglas.crawford(a)vcfed.org, Dean Notarnicola - dean.notarnicola(a)vcfed.org, CJ Reha - cj.reha(a)vcfed.org, or Jeff Salzman - jeff.salzman(a)vcf.org. Members of the mailing list may also self-nominate. To be eligible for the election, the prospective nominee must then accept the nomination by replying in the affirmative to the nomination email. One nomination per member can be made. Nominations will close on November 28th at 11:59PM. An updated list of eligible nominees will be published regularly. Nominees are also encouraged to provide a position statement, which will be posted to the VCF and MARCH websites for prospective voters to read. Voting will commence on November 30th, and will close at 11:59pm on December 12. Winners will be announced on December 13 during the Town hall event at our annual VCF Holiday celebration. Thank you, Thomas Gilinsky Chairman - VCF-MA Steering Committee

M.A.R.C.H. Workshop NOV 15-16
by Jeff Salzman 15 Nov '25

15 Nov '25

For you early birds. This weekend's Workshop is now open. I was able to get in early and get the doors open. Remember, this weekend, the Workshop is being held in Building 9010D. When you arrive at InfoAge, drive straight through at the gate. You will soon approach a large brick building at the t-intersection. We will be in that building. You can turn right and park along the grass. Walk up the cement stairs, go through the main door, and the Workshop area will be in the first open set of doors down the hall on the right. See you soon! Jeff Salzman
