Normally that would not be an issue, however as noted in the multiple emails, I had rented a lift to facilitate the work, ending up with another vendor as our normal vendor (United) could not accommodate the request At 8:45 AM, the equipment had already been loaded on the truck and was in route to Camp Evans. Due to the late notice, I could not cancel the rental flat, and ended up paying for the delivery charge + mileage. The communications failure (either intentional or otherwise) is not acceptable to me as a donor and volunteer, and such, this is the last time I am putting myself in this sort of financial position in an effort to assist InfoAge. Members of the VCF MidAtlantic Mailing List, Another year has passed by, and it's time for the VCF-MA annual Steering Committee elections There are currently two seats becoming vacant; Jason Perkins and Dave McGuire have reached the end of their appointed terms. Nominations to fill those positions are now open. The election will be held according to section 4 and 5 of our published by-laws, listed at the end of this email and linked below. https://vcfed.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/VCFMA-Charter-Jul2022.pdf) Anyone who directly receives this message and has been a member of the VCF Mailing List for at least 30 days is eligible to vote. There is no 30 day restriction to mailing list membership to be nominated as a candidate. Current members of the mailing list in good standing are eligible to submit nominations for Committee member candidates. Nominations can be made by simply communicating the nomination via e-mail to a current Committee member: Alexander Jacocks - alex.jacocks(a)vcfed.org, Dave McGuire - dave.mcguire(a)vcfed.org, Douglas Crawford - douglas.crawford(a)vcfed.org, Jason Perkins - jason.perkins(a)vcfed.org, or Jeff Salzman - jeff.salzman(a)vcf.org) Members of the mailing list may also self-nominate. Any committee vote to determine an increase in committee members shall be held within six months after a new election cycle. - A minimum of one seat will be up for election in every cycle, unless additional vacancies create the need for additional seats to be filled, in which case all vacant seats will be up for election in that cycle. - In the event of a tie, a two-week runoff election will be held. - If a tie still exists after the runoff, the non-running committee members will determine a winner. - In the event of a committee tie, the current chairperson or chair delegate will determine the winner. - Nominations for committee members can be made by current members in good standing simply by communicating the nomination to a committee member. One nomination per member can be made. Said members may also self-nominate. - In the case of off-cycle vacancies, the committee may move, without a public election, to appoint by simple majority vote new committee members to fill the seats until the next scheduled election. - A committee chairperson will be appointed by the committee members within 30 days of each completed election cycle. At that time a recording secretary will be selected. - Prospective committee members should be knowledgeable in some aspect of computing, preferably vintage computers, and show a demonstrated interest in vintage computing, computing history, and museum management and governance. - In order to be sufficiently aware and have proper perspective of museum and warehouse issues, prospective committee members should be able to physically attend VCF events at least quarterly and attend meetings regularly. 5. VCF MEMBERSHIP VCF general membership is open and granted to anyone who joins the mailing list. Voting rights will be granted to active list members who join no less than 30 days before an election.

Total Solar Eclipse and VCF East 2024

It has been brought to my attention that there may be a significant number of people that will be traveling to see the total solar eclipse which takes place on April 8 and some will be skipping VCF East. VCF East is scheduled for April 5, 6, 7, 2024 @ InfoAge. The total solar eclipse in the US is a rare event and the next one is in 2044. I already saw the last one in 2018 in Smithville, TN, so I don't need to see another. It was quite an interesting experience. I'd be curious to know what all of you feel about whether you would attend or not based on this information. It's not too late to change the dates, but I would need to figure it out within the next few weeks. Please let me know either in this thread or private mail about your attendance of VCF East or the solar eclipse. Thanks!

OT / Bonding and grounding equipment for the Diana Site

I left the box with the EMP/NEMP network cable suppressors, lugs, and #6 wire on the front bench by the computer. Will bring down my hydraulic burndy crimper to install the Burndy lugs on the #6 wire. Will be deploying them next Saturday around 12:00, and migrating the Diana site to the new data switch, along with replacing the display computers and one of the mounts. Festivus will still be this coming Saturday, December 9 will be starting officially at 10AM (some people will be there the night before and early morning). We will do a swap meet. We will have video games. We will have drinks. We will have food. One thing that I want to do differently is to cater the event. Food served at least for dinner which will be higher quality and we don't have to have our volunteers grilling burgers, etc for hours. I'm looking into the cost to see if it is feasible. If there is a preference for food let me know. November Workshop Idea - Human Interfaces day

Hello all! It’s been a while since a theme or anything has been used at a workshop. And with the next one coming up in a week I figured it’s more than enough time to try to get one going since it’s the last one of the year! Thomas said he will be working on an IBM Electromatic and that inspired this idea! My idea is to do Human Interfaces. Keyboards, teletypes, printers etc! I’m going to bring my PDP 11/23 and try to get my Model 33 going on it since I recently got an M8017 DLV11-E which can handle 110 baud! I may also drag out the Model 15 and see about messing with that. So if anyone wants to join in with the festivities of a theme next weekend, see what you have that needs work and join us in clunky old machines making far too much noise! I’ll bring some oil, a feeler gauge, service manuals if I can find them for ASR33s I know I have them somewhere.. and toothbrushes. See you all soon! Ian Litchfield

Total Solar Eclipse and VCF East 2024

I'm posting, because no one has suggested the *merits* of timing VCF-East adjacent to the April 8th Eclipse. Note that the Eclipse is an early afternoon event on the Monday after Sunday's VCF-East. First. Wall NJ will have almost 90% totality. So if someone stays over Sunday night at VCF, they get an afternoon show without going anywhere, for one more day at their hotel, a skipped workday. They won't see totality, but partials are still impressive. Second. Syracuse NY is on the south edge of totality. Google Maps suggests a 4.5 hour drive from Wall NJ to Syracuse NY, along major highways. For other Eclipse locations, more distance/time, more/less driving convenience. Someone in Wall NJ could drive to the Eclipse zone Sunday afternoon/evening, stay there overnight, drive home Monday evening. (Sunset April 8th 7:40PM local time). They could also drive Monday morning (Sunrise 6:34AM or so) and hope for no travel problems. For some people (not many, for geographic reasons), the Eclipse may be on-the-way to/from VCF-East. OT: Landline in NY/NJ Area

I'm trying to get a computer device c. 1999 to "phone home": it includes a relatively fast voiceband modem (I'm not sure of the exact speed) that needs to be connected to a POTS landline (i.e., RJ-11). It's not a fax modem, but it's playing at least as many tricks as a fax modem. I've currently tried about 6 different variants of VoIP/cable modems and they all don't work to varying degrees. I've tried seemingly every setting (codec -- I'm using the recommended G117u, jitter control, RTP packet size, echo cancellation off, etc.) on a Cisco SPA112 ATA I borrowed and it connects for a minute or two before giving up: the best behavior I've observed. I'm convinced that it won't work without connection to a traditional landline, i.e., that's connected to the PSTN through a T1 or equivalent circuit-switched, synchronous connection. Is there anybody in the New York City/New Jersey area who has an old-school landline (i.e., not from a cable modem or equivalent) that I could experiment with for an hour or so? Contact me off-list

Announcement of warehouse closure & improvements

Hello, After 18 years of acquiring artifacts, our warehouse is in need of reorganization, as well as major renovation work - climate control, roof repairs, etc. A total restructuring, inventorying, and refurbishment of the warehouse is planned to commence soon - some steps such as the installation of climate control have already been taken - however, planning this process is made difficult by the fact that a number of our members have their own personal belongings stored within, many without proper tagging or documentation as such. On January 1st, 2024, the VCF warehouse at Infoage will be closed for renovation and organization. During this time, no items will be permitted in or out of the warehouse bar those permitted *directly* by the VCF Warehouse manager - Thomas Gilinsky - during monthly repair workshops. As such, if you have any personal belongings stored within the warehouse, and would like to retrieve it, or have it tagged and set aside for you to collect later, please contact either me at thomas.gilinsky(a)vcfed.org, or Doug at douglas.crawford(a)vcfed.org. Given the long shadows and low sun, it only shows the FIRST HOUR of the event, maybe pre-opening forward. I set up just after 9AM and there was *another row* of sellers by then (say another 15% more). So there was more show than this video shows, no complaints of course. And the later hours matter. There were good buyer-deals near the last hours of the event, which (unlike most hamfests) really kept going after 12 noon, past 1PM. The place didn't really empty out, until closing at 2PM. By the end, the VCF "free pile" included some late-model PC's and some tower Macs, other 90's stuff that 10-20 years from now you'll remember when "they couldn't give 'em away". I had a good time, did well enough, and I wasn't aware of anyone who was unhappy. But I was too busy to see, do, and hear everything. Swap Meet October 2023 Wrap up

Hello everyone! I was so glad to see all of you there and very happy at the success that it was. So many happy people both the buyers and the sellers. Glad that the swap meet is growing. The food sales by the Fire Museum was really great! They made $600 towards their museum. I appreciated the volunteers from the Sea Cadets. This helped make the event more organized. I'm losing count, but I believe that this was our 6th swap meet and it keeps getting better! Thanks so much to all the volunteers who made my job easier! I look forward to planning the next swap meet which will be in June and making it bigger and better for everyone. I hope to someday fill up that parking lot! Until the next time. Thanks! The CDL team will be pulling fiber into the conduit installed on 10/14/2023 to support the new Monmouth County Fire Museum. The basic game plan: * Pull back the fiber to Broadway, and re-route into the conduit * Replacing the backboard in the firehouse and install the new network switch as the existing switch does not support the new 10GB feed. * Mount outdoor access point on gable end of the firehouse (to cover events in the Monmouth Boulevard Parking lot) * Mount camera on front of Firehouse (pointed at Building 9059) If anyone from VCF is available to assist, please contact me off list Martin Flynn

Well, Bill considered that these Intel Multibus boxes are interesting systems to some, as they are to others like us who used them in the 1970's era. It's quite a pile. If they look in sad condition, well, they look well used and they *are* half a century old. I'm old myself but hopefully not so sad looking! These blue-boxes reflect the state of the art, of industrial microcomputing development, going into the late 1970's. Also consider: there's members of this list outside of New Jersey. It's quite an auction, an estate sale, so for some it's an opportunity. Not much notice, as I post this it's the first day of the auction already. Still, it's interesting to see these things "in the wild", and see they pop up for sale decades after most were scrapped. Who are our Atari experts at the NJ Repair workshops?

I worked with Andy (from DC, hope I got that correct) on a couple of his Atari drive (1050 and XF551). The Atari XF551 is a 5 1/4" 40 track drive. We could access it but not read or write to the drive. Could be the head, could be the driver, could be alignment. But this was beyond me with what we had available. Good new is we managed to get a troublesome 1050 work but I'm not sure how (VooDoo). Anyways, Andy was supposed to meet with someone. But I don't know who. I did give him some useful tips as I have A8's (Atari 8-bits).
