Anyone Have a Functional C128DCR (or C128) Board to Sell?
by J. Alexander Jacocks 02 May '18

02 May '18

All, I spent all this past workshop attempting to repair my C128DCR's luma/chroma output, which seems to have lost the chroma. Does anyone have a spare board? I need to get something working by VCFe, and I also could use another board, to compare. Drop me a line, if so. Better, if you're somewhere near DC, so I can come and get it. Thanks! - Alex

OK. I checked with all the appropriate people and here are the finalized dates: June 9 & June 10 June 30 & July 1 August 11 & 12 In case anyone asks, we cannot do any in July because of conflicts with other events (Hamfests, K-Fest, etc.) and availability of the room at InfoAge.

Ascii keyboard and Televideo Personal Terminal
by Jeff G 01 May '18

01 May '18

First question - does anyone have a 7-bit ascii keyboard I could borrow or potentially buy? Second question - Does anyone have extra parts and/or a manual to a Televideo Personal Terminal? Not even sure of the model of this as I can't find much documentation, but do see a few Youtube vids on it. Its a pretty small terminal. This one is badly yellowed, missing the spacebar, and I think it has some corrupt nvram (from just sitting) but I have no idea how to clear or fix it. On the "personal terminal" front, I also have an old At&t "Personal Terminal" that has a mushy touch screen on it (literally). I used to have a keyboard for this and got rid of it years ago like an idiot. Would anyone have such a keyboard for one laying around? The connector on it would be similar to the one that goes into the IBM model M, sort of a flat wide connector. The keyboard is fairly short/small and came with a "garage", sort of a shallow stand that the entire thing would sit on and provide a space to slide in the keyboard. Wish I could find one again. Thanks! Jeff aka Bags

A few workshop notes
by Herb Johnson 01 May '18

01 May '18

I was able to come out to the workshop on Sunday, and work on an unusual computer I obtained. It's a Motorola EXORset 30. It's a 6809 development system running an XDOS OS on floppy, and supported by Motorola's EXORbus bussed backplane. It came up without a lot of fuss. It needed some careful AC power conditioning to the power electrolytics. http://www.retrotechnology.com/restore/exorset.html I gave some support to Adam, who was able to operate his SGI Indigo computer for the first time, thanks to a keyboard and mouse I provided. I chatted with several people attending, providing sage wisdom about problems with RAM, switching speeds of diodes, pressure rollers on tape drives. I removed some rust from a couple of dot-matrix printers, and was surprised to find they could still print! Thanks to Jeff Galinat, who leant me AC cables and a 360K diskette; and to Jeff Brace for his support of and at the Workshop. Of course, I learned a lot about how my friends were diagnosing these issues. The depth of talent on site Sunday was amazing. It's rare and informative, to discuss 3-volt negative logic and the switching speeds of diodes at one point, then the problems of aged hard-rubber rollers at the next moment. I learned more about the early history of Apple II products. I got under the hood of some early Commodore PET's to see the less-than-industrial designs they produced early on. Any of these repair and preparation activities could be discussed at length. And it's a pleasure to see what the Museum's UNIVAC is able to do, even as more work is in progress. To think that other shipboard computers like that, were operating at sea in the late 1970's is astounding. Then to have one operational today, that's a great gift. That's also true of the PDP-8 "straight-eight", which was under repair at the diode level this weekend. And it's good to see my friends again, see and hear about them and their work and history with vintage computing. Even the weather was cooperative. Herb Herbert R. Future VCF Workshops - Summer 2018
by Jeffrey Brace 01 May '18

01 May '18

I'm looking ahead and will be picking dates for the June, July and August workshops. June 9&10 seems like a good date which conflicts only with Pacific Commodore Expo NW in Seattle. July 14&15 is the only weekend available at InfoAge and conflicts with Sussex Hamfest. Is this a big Hamfest? If so, we could do June 30&July1 instead. August Weekends: 11&12, 25&26 I did my best to avoid conflicts with known Hamfests and Vintage or related shows. Any thoughts or feelings about these dates?

A few workshop notes
by Evan Koblentz 30 Apr '18

30 Apr '18

Good workshop this time around! Thanks to Jeff for organizing and everyone who attended. A few notes: - Special thanks to Ian, Jason P., Rich, Eric, Jeff J., Jeff B., Matt K., Laura, Martin (remotely), and Adam for all working on VCFed things. - Special thanks to just about everybody who was there Saturday and helped with unloading the IBM System/34. Darn good thing that IA owns a forklift and the military vehicle group guys were there to operate it! That's the right tool for the job, and it sure made easy/short work of unloading the minicomputer. - Last thing I did before leaving today was install the front trim panels on the UNIVAC pallets. Now they look like display platforms instead of forklift pallets: https://tinyurl.com/yctdlkfl. ________________________________ Evan Koblentz, executive director Vintage Computer Federation a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit evan(a)vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 www.vcfed.org facebook.com/vcfederation twitter.com/vcfederation instagram.com/vcfederation

road signs, construction on I-95/I-295 near Trenton NJ
by Herb Johnson 28 Apr '18

28 Apr '18

For those traveling by car or truck on I-95 - I-295 around Trenton NJ. About the "loop" around Trenton, from the PA border, across US-1, to I-195 east/west (a major route to VCFed facilities at Infoage / Wall NJ). There's a signage and exit-number change on that loop. The entire loop is now signed "I-295", from the PA-NJ border to I-195. Formerly the NJ segment from the Scudders Falls bridge between PA and NJ, to US-1, was called "I-95". So your GPS maps may/may not show, and your eyeballs will see, signs which look a little different. I live in that area. There's also changes now and in years to come, at the PA Turnpike (I-276) and how it connects to the NJ Turnpike and to I-95 in PA. I don't follow that in detail and don't use those routes. But in several years, that Scudders Falls bridge will be replaced and become a toll bridge. Construction is happening there NOW and it may slow down traffic and line the road with blinky-light barriers. Old folks like me, who use paper maps and navigate by signs and eyeballs, not some digital GPS voice, pay attention to this stuff. Please, no snarky remarks, I'm trying to do my driving friends a favor here, not expose myself to ridicule. Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. Johnson, New Jersey in the USA http://www.retrotechnology.com OR .net

OT: Commodore sign on i295?
by John Heritage 28 Apr '18

28 Apr '18

Dumb question - I got my drivers license right around the time Commodore went bankrupt.. However, for at least a couple of years, I remember seeing a giant "Commodore" sign on the side of i295 heading south (New Jersey).. where Pureland industrial park is. (~ I think between Exit 10 and 11). I know that C='s HQ wasn't very far away in West Chester. Does anyone else remember this sign - and was it for "the" Commodore? Did Commodore have operations in Pureland at some point? (There's a small possibility the sign was on the other side of the road.. but I definitely remember the sign around that area of i295..) Thanks :)

Need for workshop : Cardco Universal Centronics Parallel Printer Interface Commodore 64
by Jeffrey Brace 28 Apr '18

28 Apr '18

Since Evan is asking for things for people to bring at the last minute to the workshop, I'm jumping on the bandwagon ;) I have a Cardco Universal Centronics Parallel Printer Interface Commodore 64, but the wire that connects to the tape drive interface is disconnected. With help I should be able to repair it. It may just need soldering on the correct position. But as a backup, if someone has quick access to this device, then I would appreciate bringing it! I'm sure that there a dozen in the warehouse, but finding it may be a challenge, unless Adam has organized small interfaces as well!

Neil likely is looking for, something like: 2.4V Volt Button Cell 80mAH NiMH Many of these are sold as 3.6 volt (three cells). Maybe he can chop up a couple. Local sources? Maybe Walmart or Best Buy, as some kind of "wired telephone battery". Radio Shack used to exist and sell these for $18. Ebay has bunches but I'm not sure how batteries ship from China these days. NiCad coin cells?
by Neil Cherry 26 Apr '18

26 Apr '18

I'm busy resurrecting a Toshiba T100SE. Unfortunately I've found the Ni-Cads to all be dead, The main battery pack is a 7.2v 1700mHA pack (6x1.2v) and then there's a RTC backup battery which is made up of Ni-Cad coin cells (2.4v, 4x1.2v but made up of 4 cells). Anyway I can fudge it with a couple of AA Ni-Cads I have. This is just to make sure it starts up the Intelligent power supply is very picky about the batteries. I currently have a kludge battery pack of AA Ni-Cads (with twice the mAH - hehe) and I'll build a temporary RTC battery out of 2 AA Ni-Cads. So my questions are: - Does anyone have any recommendations for building (or rebuilding) the battery pack? - Any recommendations on the coin cell part? -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry(a)linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies

forum posting problem
by W2HX 24 Apr '18

24 Apr '18

Hi guys. I just spent an hour working on a post on my PDP-11 project. I was reviewing it when I clicked on one of the inline images (as attachment) to see how it looked. It brought up the framed hop-up with the image. I clicked the image within the hop up and the browser now showed the url for the image directly. No hop up, no forum in the background. I then went to click "back" to continue editing the post and I got a blank white page. I went back several times just to arrive back at the original "REPLY TO POST" when I began with no sign of the hour of work I did. Nothing I could do would get it back. Anyone know if the draft is stored somewhere? Is there some place I can go to view my drafts and continue on? Otherwise, very sad! Eugene

gold fing-ers
by Herb Johnson 23 Apr '18

23 Apr '18

So, I'm obtaining a recently-made PC board, which was produced by some PC board house from Gerber files, the usual sort of small-run hobby project. This particular board, was with ENIG plating on board and fingers. This means, a micron-thick plating of gold over 150-200 microns of nickel, mostly for better soldering and copper protection. But that also "covers" the edge-connector fingers, they are not heavier gold. What's out there, for adding gold to those fingers? There's a good number of them, not just a dozen or two. I"m bothering to ask the question here, because it's a "vintage repair" problem also. A solution for one or two fingers, is a solution for many. Or, tell me "nickel isn't so bad, don't insert and remove it every day, you'll be fine". No, I won't spend $300, $600 for a gold-plating electro-pen system. If someone has that and wants to give me a quote, I'm all ears, tell me how many microns you'll plate. No, I won't mix up cyanide solutions, not likely to use nitric acid; it's outside my experiences and one "oops" could really ruin my day. I don't expect to rub gold-leaf on fingers and glue them down, that won't last. I may well go to some PC board shop and ask them for a quote, maybe someone has done that. So - what do people here know-of, from repair experiences or their own experiences? I have looked around the Web, there's means of doing these things, but it's hard to judge them "cold". And of course, it's hard to search on "hobbyist covering PCB edge connector with gold", there's many people selling products or showing how they mess with aqua regia or coat quarters with microns of gold. VCF East XIII - Saturday Dinner - May 19, 2018 at 7:30 pm
by Jeffrey Brace 22 Apr '18

22 Apr '18

WHAT: VCF East XIII Saturday Buffet Dinner DATE: May 19 TIME: 7:30 PM LOCATION: Clancy's Tavern (West Grove Plaza) CITY: Neptune Township This is this same place that we had it the last two years. The VCF East XIII organizers reviewed the feedback from the survey that I sent out a few weeks ago for our Saturday dinner. We started this dinner so that the whole large group of us could chat in a casual place and have a decent meal after a weekend of fast food. I did my best to find a reasonable price, high quality of food, good parking, short distance from VCF East, able to accomodate dozens of people, etc. The cost of the dinner will be $29. This is the best that we can do for such a large group. The menu is more flexible than other places for a large group of people. We reserved the place for 40 people. So if you want to go, then make sure you pay ahead of time to secure your spot. You can prepay to paypal(a)vcfed.org and make sure to include a note that it is for VCF East XIII Saturday Dinner. The VCF East organizers decided together along with feedback from my survey that the following will be the new unlimited buffet menu: COLD Caesar Salad Cold Cut Platter Fresh Fruit WARM Nachos Beef Stroganoff with egg noodles Chicken Parmesean Penne Vodka DESSERT Carvel Ice Cream Cake After dinner some of us are going to visit the nearby SilverBall Arcade in Asbury Park. Anyone is free to meet us there. I'm not sure of the exact time. Maybe 9:30 or 10pm.

Museum report
by Evan Koblentz 22 Apr '18

22 Apr '18

Sorry everyone for the late report. I had to rush to a personal commitment after museum hours and just got home. Moderate amount of visitors today. About a dozen total, all adults. I installed kick-down doorstops on the double-door entrance to our museum. Before we were using a wedge-style doorstop and only had one of those. New ones are a nice improvement. I tested our new Compaq Portable III because I need a working one for Lego robot demos. It boots to a memory error, so I'll see about fixing it at the next workshop -- something about "error 21" but I forget the exact message. We have another one for parts if needed. Should I start with the usual reseating, etc.? (Worse problem: the prior owner inserted a 5.25" disk ** sideways ** .... it's stuck in there. I will take it apart at the workshop to undo their action.) Laura was there today to paint the trim pieces that will attach to the front of the new UNIVAC pallets. Tony stopped by to work on the last of our untested Apple IIs.

FS: Morrow Multi-IO S-100 Interface AS-IS/Not Working
by systems_glitch 20 Apr '18

20 Apr '18

pictures: https://imgur.com/a/r5AN8wu I've had this board in my box of S-100 boards for a long time and haven't gotten around to fixing it, so I'm going to sell it as-is for what I paid for it ($50). This board is basically a follow-on to the Morrow SwitchBoard, it uses newer devices and is IEEE-696 compatible. Unfortunately, someone pulled the PLD/decode ROM, so it doesn't currently work. I've powered it up on my test backplane, regulators and capacitors are good. The manual is available online and documents which pins on the PLD/decode ROM do what, but IIRC it doesn't include the equations for it. I believe one could replace it with a sufficiently high speed ROM, or build an adapter and use a GAL. In any case, it's sold AS-IS, and definitely won't work if you just plug it in and expect to use it! Contact me off-list if you're interested. Price is $50, shipping in the US is $12, overseas is probably going to be $25-30. Thanks, Jonathan

CTTY in Freedos
by Jeff G 18 Apr '18

18 Apr '18

Hi all - I'm in the process of building a mega disk-imaging box, er really a "vintage computing support center" box to help with creating disks, imaging disks, etc. It even has a Needhams ISA rom burner (and get this, its a P4!). The computer runs Freedos as its main OS. Getting data to/from the computer isn't a problem as I have a couple 2gb USB sticks that the BIOS supports as a dos-compatible hard drive, as long as I boot with one in it. That said, I was hoping that on occasion to be able to control it from my main computer, and figured a serial cable and CTTY would work, but despite having the serial port working via Telix (can talk to my main computer running Putty), CTTY gives me a write error (and the usual abort/retry/fail). Anyone know why that is and how to fix it? I'm thinking CTTY is looking at control lines, but I have a serial breakout box on it now and cts/rts criss-crossed as they should. Thanks in advance! Jeff G #3 - aka "Bags"

April 28 & 29, 2018 Workshop Reminder Info
by Jeffrey Brace 18 Apr '18

18 Apr '18

There's still time to sign up for the workshop. We have a number of people signed up, but still have a bit of room left. As a reminder the workshop is $10 *per* person, *per* day. Sorry this InfoAge's rule and not our decision. So that means for two days it is $20. Some people didn't realize this last workshop. This has been in effect since June 2017. If you have signed up, then you are guaranteed a table, otherwise you have to beg for forgiveness and bribe me with my favorite snack. DATE: April 28 & 29, 2018 LOCATION: InfoAge Building 9032A - (2201 Marconi Road, Wall Township, NJ) TIME: Start about 10 A.M. on Saturday and ends whenever we go to sleep. End about 5 P.M. on Sunday. (Starts around 10 A.M. Sunday morning) SIGNUP: < https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15skPd9SrZ2WsHMoTBTrrvBNwG1nbixVNfey… > COST: - $10 per person, PER day. This is required by InfoAge for us to pay for renting the space. - $25 for those wanting to stay overnight. Please pay me when you get there so that I don't forget. Otherwise I will send Taekwon Joe to find you and kick you with his puppet legs. Seriously, it's a pain to have to chase people around for money. It's not a fun job, but it is necessary because we rent the place from InfoAge and the dorms from the Sandy group. OVERNIGHT: Bring your own pillow, blankets, soap etc. We provide a bed frame and an uncovered mattress. There are showers and a kitchen for your use. - You can pay via PayPal. Ask me for the info at the workshop. EQUIPMENT: - VCF will provide a table and you can use any available electrical outlet. - Bring your own tools, power strips, power cords, and supplies etc. - Please bring an extra one or two power cords as these are often forgotten by people. DRINKS: You should bring your own. I would recommend bringing a cooler of some type. FOOD: You provide your own. We usually order pizza, subs or go out to a dinner and everyone pays their own way. Usually, we make a decision when everyone gets hungry. GATE: During the hours from 1 pm to 5 pm close the front gate behind you. We want museum visitors to go to the front lobby and not wander through the middle of the campus. Outside of those times, you can feel free to leave the gate open. PARKING: Park across from 9032 or 9010A on any blacktop area. InfoAge doesn't like us parking on the lawn anymore. QUESTIONS? Please ask me (Jeff Brace) or Evan. My cell is 732-759-1783 and Evan’s is 646-546-9999 in case you need to contact us. See everyone there! And have fun!
