OT: Software Freedom Day.
by murph 26 Aug '25

26 Aug '25

We're having an event for Software Freedom Day. It is a world-wide educational event, and we are having one right here at Montclair State University. We'll have talks about what free software is, and why it's important for everyone. What kind of software is available for your existing computer, and how you can use Free Software to use your computer past the date that the manufacturer wants to keep updating it. There will be a talk on self hosting, so that you can run services that reduce or replace your reliance on outside big tech companies, and keep better control of your data. There will also be a talk on Social Networking with free software called "Mastodon and the Fediverse" that will show how you can network with people without giving your data to big tech, and without the algorithms that don't work in your best interest. --- For a general computer user -- You might be thinking. "I get software for free all the time, it come with my computer, and there are lots of free services that I can get over the internet. We're talking about software that is free as in Freedom. Free to use, improve and share, and software that does not require a subscription or ads from an outside source. --- For an aspiring developer --- What is the point of worrying about licensing my software, does it matter? If you choose a Free Software license for your software can get community help in developing it, you can get wider acceptance in community projects without losing control of it, and contribute to the community of computer users. There is a huge variety of software out there, and we'd like to take some time to tell people about it. This is a community event, and we'd love to see people from all over come out! Here are some links for more information: https://softwarefreedom.neocities.org/ also, the foundation site https://digitalfreedoms.org/en/software-freedom-day/events/software-freedom… If you have any questions, please email myself at: sfd(a)murph.info Or my colleague Mars at: mxu(a)uribe.cc We'll be happy to discuss any details.

My Apple I reproduction is working!
by Neil Cherry 20 Aug '25

20 Aug '25

Manage to get myself somehow dragged into building Apple Is because I wanted a 6800 version. That was the start of trouble! So I bought 2 bare PCBs and planned to build a 6502 and 6800 version. Had I done some research before hand I would have found I could have bought many vintage computers for the price of the various parts of the Apple I and we're not talking date correct parts just the necessary parts. But at the same time I happened on an unloved more than complet Apple I reproduction that wasn't running. So I bid and won at a more than reasonable price, half as much as a working complete reproduction and less than buying the parts. Well I diagnosed the bad chip, a 2519 ($70+). I used a replacement board with parts that are available and I now can program like it was 1976. :-) I threw some quick photos up on: https://ushomeautomation.com/Projects/Vintage/Apple1/index.html Yes, the Commodore monitor needs a bit of TLC. I'll get to it ... eventually. ;-) -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry(a)linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies KD2ZRQ

HOPE_16 (2025)
by Jeffrey Brace 19 Aug '25

19 Aug '25

Hope took place this past weekend. There were four volunteers: Doug Crawford Jeff Brace Jeff Jonas Joe Giliberti We had spent many weeks preparing for this event. We were there all three days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and felt that we were successful in connecting with our existing fans as well as letting many others learn about our organization and events. The trainers that we had set up were a hit with this audience. There were some that sat down and spent the 10 to 15 minutes to code the program into the HeathKit. We shared one of our tables with Lee Felsenstein. He was promoting his book, t-shirts and posters. He spent a lot of time talking to fans who stopped by our table. There were people of all shapes, sizes, ages and genders. It was a diverse audience of hackers. I was able to catch one or two talks as well as participate in the "Hackers Got Talent" competition. (I got 2nd place). I will share pictures later after I've decompressed a bit. It was a good weekend, but very exhausting. Take care! Jeff Brace VCF Evangelist

Fox In WinSocks
by Jeffrey Jonas 10 Aug '25

10 Aug '25

I found a printout of this. Most is online: http://holyjoe.org/poetry/anonE.htm by Gene Ziegler What If Dr. Seuss Wrote Technical Manuals? (original title: A Grandchild's Guide to Using Grandpa's Computer) Fox In WinSocks Here's an easy game to play. Here's an easy thing to say: If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, And the bus is interrupted as a very last resort, And the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report! If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, And the double-clicking icons put your window in the trash, And your data is corrupted 'cause the index doesn't hash, Then your situation's hopeless, and your system's gonna crash! You can't say this? What a shame, sir! We'll find you another game, sir. If the label on your cable on the table at your house, Says the network is connected to the button on your mouse, But your packets want to tunnel by another protocol That's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall, And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss, So your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse, Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'Cause as sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang! When the copy of your floppy's getting sloppy on the disk, And the microcode instructions cause unnecessary RISC, Then you have to flash your memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM: Quickly turn off your computer and be sure to tell your mom!

Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Nice Quasar TV
by Herbert Johnson 06 Aug '25

06 Aug '25

"SentryTV" posted an apparently private message from Bill Degnan, as the message itself was not distributed in the list. Bill gave some cautionary private advice about respecting views of someone with long history in VCFed-Mid AKA March. And Bill affirmed that the topic of a Quasar TV was in Bill's view, reasonably on-topic. Bill was right on all counts. And as I'm also a person with "long history", his point about due consideration strikes home with me. Curious, that someone with "TV" in their pseudonym would complain that TV's are off-topic. Broadcast TV's including CRT TV's continue to be part of vintage computing, particularly in the home video game/computer domain. They are present at every VCF event. They are an allied interest on their own. Plus, Bill was doing "Sentry" a favor by keeping his comments as a *private* response. By broadcasting them in reply, you dismissed his courtesy and discouraged others from making private contacts to express such cautions. This kind of discourse, in my opinion, is not good for friendly and sometimes challenging public discussion. I'm not a moderator but when lines are crossed without dissent, those lines go away. This is my dissent. If I have a vote, I vote for courtesy. If courtesy ends, I will go away. Regards, Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. MARCH Workshop, InfoAge Campus, August 9-10, 2025
by Jeff Salzman 30 Jul '25

30 Jul '25

Just a reminder about the upcoming August 9-10, 2025 MARCH Repair Workshop. For those who weren't aware, the Workshop now takes place exclusively in the 9032A room attached to the back side of the InfoAge "Hotel" building. CDL will not be opened for Workshop activity. For those who attended VCF-East, 9032A is where the lower exhibit hall was located. A large room at ground level with plenty of windows and cement floor. The entrance to 9032A is via a door near where the airplane is located on the InfoAge campus. See the MAP tab in the signup spreadsheet linked below for visual reference. Please add your name to the spreadsheet below so we can have an idea of the number of tables to reserve for attendees: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1hT8BFEpNLZLa5ibWOG7sGZDzkd5S6Mmd13I… Any questions, please reply to this email. Identify magnetic cartridge
by Herbert Johnson 29 Jul '25

29 Jul '25

> An InfoAge member is looking for help to identify this: > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Es783xJSARU photo 1 "RCS Mobile" plastic cartridge "retention cassette" label says "US Coast Guard segments JKL" voice says "fifty of these tapes ... from Kennedy [?]" "never seen before... can't find..." Photo 2 has end of cart, looks like 1/4" mag tape. voice says "little mirror" and Photo 4 B&W shows youngster with headphones, watching image, cartridge apparently plugged into a player about a cubic foot in size. YOutube video by Halligan142 promotes general metal machining tooling. *"RCS mobile" audio cartridges* on Google search by me Herb Johnson second Web link given is https://www.worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-BC-Engineering/Radio-World-Mo… brochure from "Radio World" NAB product preview, "the worlds largest electronic media show" april 2004 Las Vegas. Link content is "Tools from RCS Mobile integrate with other RCS products including Selector music scheduling and Master Control " studio automation." Page 15 of document "New Services from RCS" RCS of White Plains NY www.rcsworks.com RCS Web site suggests RCS produces Radio Automation software and playout. Under "company" and "about us", text says "RCS invented music scheduling on computers, opening its doors in 1979 with the very first version of the legendary Selector." Herb Johnson concludes: these cartridges are some kind of proprietary audio playback product that plays back audio messages probably minutes in length on a closed-loop audio track. Possibly video information is encoded also, an image of a player suggests this. All kinds of audio cartridge technology was produced for radio stations in the mid-20th century, for quick DJ access and automated platy of messages and music. Some were used for educational purposes, or kiosk type commercial displays. Later in the era, people often used VHS video tapes and automated players. Simply: these carts are like old 8-track audio tapes for automated audio play. Some looped to avoid manual rewind. Here's another example of that technology. https://www.retrotechnology.com/restore/rca_cart_history.html If the tape is 1/4 inch wide "standard" Mylar plasic with a magnetic coated surface, I suggest dismantling one of the carts to extract a tape and play it on some mono or stereo 1/4-inch reel-to-reel tape recorder. To see the actual tracks: You may be able to find some kind of "magnetic viewer" technology like this: https://store.arnoldmagnetics.com/product/284/magnetic-viewer-b-1022 that uses tiny iron filings in a fluid. Put upon magtapes, it visually shows the magnetic recording tracks under magnification. People who worked with 7 or 9 track 1/2-inch computer magtapes will know that tech. NeXT Cubes Available
by Bill Degnan 23 Jul '25

23 Jul '25

Hello I have been in my spare time messing around with NeXT hardware and I have built three extra working NeXT cube systems (mouse keyboard, computer, display) that I would be willing to let go for less than Ebay prices (look on Ebay for sold status complete systems). Two of them have SCSI2SD hard drives and I have one that still has a working original drive. I don't have any optical disks available, but the optical drives come with the system, untested. There are always caveats to define "works", but basically these are working computer systems that could be connected to a network and they come with a basic Next OS installed. I don't want to ship these if possible. So if you're willing to pick up the system (Landenberg, PA), you can try before you buy and pick the one you want at a discount to Ebay price. Contact me through kennettclassic.com/contact.cfm with your offer/timeline. FIrst come first served. Shipping is available if you want to pay a shipping charge, plus postage. I have shipping boxes. I am going to VCFMW this year, but I am flying there and won't be able to bring them. If you want the cube system delivered to VCFMW, you'd have to find someone to deliver it for you, or have it shipped. I am willing to deliver a system a reasonable distance from the Phila/Baltimore area. Cash, CC, Paypal, check accepted. Bill Degnan 484 732 7041 kennettclassic.com

REPAIRING IBM 386 PS/2 PC
by Herbert Johnson 11 Jul '25

11 Jul '25

Just to be clear: Jesus A. Diaz of Elizabeth, reports he has an "IBM 386 PS/2 PC" that isn't booting up, and he describes the limited operations it performs on power up. Namely, the fan runs but nothing else, no LED lights no sounds. There's also something he calls "a screen" - maybe a CRT monitor? - that shows the literal words "NO SIGNAL". I have some suggestions to diagnose things further. Warning: proceed at your own risk on these suggestions. Also: I don't know everything, and I'm not an "official" in any way of VCFed or MARCH. But I think it's possible the "motherboard" has failed in some way, rather than the power supply. 1) I don't know if this model computer has its own internal CRT and monitor circuits; and if they are powered by the same DC power supply as the 368 computer. If "the screen" is an external and modern LCD monitor, those are perfectly capable of showing text messages with no computer inputs at all. If "the screen" is an integrated 1990 CRT monitor on a 1990 IBM computer, my guess is "it's not smart enough". Jesus should search the Web for IBM documentation for his exact PC model and see if it offers more diagnostic information, and if operation of the monitor to show *that message* suggests his AC to DC power supply is operating on the computer side. The IBM brand of 386 PS/2 PCs had some pretty good documentation about diagnosing problems. It would be good for Jesus to confirm the exact model and IBM model number of his PC, for anyone wishing to help him. 2) Same deal with that fan. Maybe something else powers that fan. See what documentation says. 3) A simple means to test some of the computer's DC power operation, is to pull the DC power connector from the floppy drive or the hard drive, and use a voltmeter to measure the 5 volts and 12 volts. The connector has four pins, two are ground and one each for 5 and 12 volts. Documentation for these devices will describe the connectors and where the voltages are. Typically the center two pins are "ground", the pins at either end are power. It's harder work, to measure voltages on the PC motherboard, or on the DC power cable. I don't suggest pulling the DC power cable from the motherboard. Without a connected power load on that supply, it may *cause damage*. I'm not sure. Be careful inside your PC, anything you do is at your own risk. 4) related to 3) maybe he can hear the hard-drive spin up when power is applied. He may have to work hard to listen for that. Possibly the floppy drives will spin, but that's not always true if the computer is not functional and or there's no floppy in the drive. Point being: if the DC power supply appears to function, then it's the motherboard. Not much else is left. After Jesus does some of this testing and work, and gets familiar with some of the inner features of this PC, another Web search on that model *and* specific problems, may yield more discussions on the Web about repairing one. Possibly it will lead him to some online sale of a motherboard, power supply or matching computer. Also: Jesus might look at archived previous messages in this vcf-midatlantic list, about the occasional workshops offered at InfoAge (in Wall NJ). Possibly he'd like to bring his PC for *his own work* to test and repair. Read prior discussions to see how that works. They are not "we will fix your PC" workshops, please be clear about that. https://lists.vcfed.org/pipermail/vcf-midatlantic/ Good luck with resolving the IBM 386 PC issues. Dave McG (have to specify here) - can you share the download dirs? I'd love to pull modern versions of RSX for my PiDP, and then put them on my /73 also. Hello and welcome to the group Just a quick question or two and a couple of pointers on what to check. You say the fan comes on so you know it has power. Do you see any other lights on including keyboard lights? If you see no other lights and no signs of life other than the power fan,it seems to me as if you have AC power only and you don’t have any DC power. Which means the power supply is not functioning properly, probably a blown fuse. With the storms we’ve been having lately I wouldn’t be surprised. Because of its age, the power supply needs to be tested completely and to be made sure that it has parts that are 100% reliable. This, I am sure, can be done at any of the up upcoming repair workshops at InfoAge wall Township nj. While we do not have all of the parts to fix everything, we can certainly help you test it out and see if the power supply is working properly. Other things can be tested as well if the power supply works, sometimes a deep dive can be done, depending on how much time there is. If you’re handy with a multimeter, You can do a quick test checking for 12 V and 5 v @ the connectors for the floppy drive or hard drive or even the motherboard. I personally have not been to attend any of the workshops recently and this weekend has a big swap meet up in North Jersey, so I will not be there at a workshop on Sunday for sure. So I figured this might get you started ! Because A - - - > C is the boot sequence, that the floppy light does not come on suggests the boot sequence does not begin. All data are backed up; I'm at no risk of losing anything. I'm considering repairing the unit, if that's possible, for the reason I go on to describe. I taught college for 30+ years, so many files in the PC are formatted in Word Perfect 5.1 & an early version of Microsoft Word. Though I retired from f/t work I adjunct regularly. Occasionally, an old file, in its original version or edited, is what I need for a class or another project. On my Windows 11 machine I have recent versions of Word Perfect & Word, where I can open these files. But this requires substantial reformatting, which takes time. I would like to print files directly from the 386, where conversion and reformatting are not necessary. Basic documents make it through the conversion process better than those that are heavily formatted. Most of my documents are heavily formatted. I know that recent versions of Windows claim they run DOS programs. In the Windows Search function, look for "open an MS-DOS program from a command prompt window" and/or ""allocating system resources for an MS-DOS based programs." I have not tried these options but, even if they work, I would rather spend my time on things other than learning the tricks to run this option. Repairing a 386 doesn't make financial sense, but it makes time-efficiency sense. Taking the machine to a repair shop would probably not work; these shops work on newer machines. I have a weird take on this. I needed RSX-11 for my /73 project, and what I did was take the disk image from my PiDP/11 SIMH directories and image that onto the SD card for the SCSI drive in the 11. Sotheby's Apple I Auction
by Christian Liendo 04 Jul '25

04 Jul '25

I figured Corey worked on this. https://youtu.be/XdBKuBhdZwg?si=oWV7zmYZYGVp29aM The Apple-1, the first pre-assembled personal computer to come to market, was the debut product of Apple Computer, the company that would grow to become one of the world’s largest. The Steve Wozniak-designed computer was one of the first to integrate video display terminal circuitry into its circuit board: a revolutionary step at a time when most computers used blinking lights and switches as an interface. The Apple-1 with a television screen and keyboard was a computer that was accessible to an audience well beyond hobbyists. The founders, Wozniak and Steve Jobs were friends steeped in the counterculture of the late 1960s and early ‘70s. They exemplified the next generation of Silicon Valley entrepreneurial spirit where government research, psychedelic experience, creative cooperation and an openness to unexplored possibility came together. The Apple-1 will be part of Sotheby’s Geek Week History of Science & Technology Sale in New York on 2 July 2025. Date codes seem to be 1998. Relative asked me to help dispose of this computer. Is this of interest to anybody who can pick up at a Baltimore or NJ workshop or Bethesda MD? Its in a generic white case. Couldn't see any identifier on the motherboard. Chips dated 98. I powered it on and got beeps but no video though using VGA to HDMI adapter that I don't know if works. I can do better testing and if it runs enough find out what processor etc it has if someone is interested. I will either need to wipe the drives or remove them. Somewhat dirty but I can remove the worst of it. Didn't see any obvious cap/battery damage but didn't do that much inspection. Email me directly if of interest.
